Well let me start off by saying I preordered this game. I go to EB today and they say they didn't get their shipment. I was like WTF!! so I ask for my money back (I only put 5 $ down to gurantee I'd get it today) and I was only able to get it in a gift card form. I wasn't particularly mad since I go to EB all the time so I could use it on another purchase. I then head to another videogame store I go to and they didn't have it either!!! I've been waiting for this game for a while and i'm incredibly mad I've had to drive around and found nothing.

Finally I did find the game at dare I say Toys R Us. Yeah it was pathetic. Even more pathetic I've yet to play the game. I'll just start off the topic with this.

Actually I've found ToysRus to be one of the most reliable sources for video games. Don't feel embarassed, because they carry "M" rated games too.

I just picked up 007 Everything or Nothing, so I may have to hold off on the MGS:TS purchase...

I picked up Twin Snakes yesterday. I didn't play it until today, since I had take the GC out of its box and hook it up. So far, I'm impressed with this game. I'm not too far, but my only complaint so far is that Snake makes too much noise when he walks. He wasn't this noisy in Sons of Liberty or the first MG Solid. Maybe he's wearing tap dancing shoes.....

Toys "R" Us is a good store to get a game, especially when you get tired of the guys at EBGames or Gamestop harrassing you over pre-ordering everything. Sometimes they think they are the only game stores around...

I may wait for the price to come down a little bit before I buy this one. Although it's only $40.00 right now. I'm still waiting to hear from Papa Smurf and Rogue Bounty Hunter to see they think...

From the reviews I've read they seem to be nit picking the game to pieces. I guess that's one of the drawbacks of updating a classic game. They also said the game is pretty short. Come on guys, speak up! What do you think of this game so far?

Man. . . you've been talking about this game for months, and now you're gonna postpone picking it up? What else has come out on gamecube this year that you've wanted to get? Yeah, there's some nitpicking reviews, but you've never played the original, and this is one of the all time greatest games, except Silicon Knights has shot it full of steroids. And its only $40?

Come on, put your money where your mouth is on Gamecube support and pick this title up. Do you know how much crap Evolution is going to give you after you arguing with him about this being more than just "a fresh coat of paint?" Unless you're planning on picking up Harvest Moon next week, Twin Snakes is THE gamecube game to get this month.

Come on guys, speak up! What do you think of this game so far?

Eventhough I'm not too far in the game, I'll break down my first impressions.

The Good- The controls for the game work well. Snake is pretty responsive, and when shooting in first person, the GC controller actually feels better to use since it uses that big "A" button to shoot while holding the Z" button.
-Graphics for this game are well done.
-The Enemy AI is smarter than in MGS1, and may be smarter than in MGS2. They seem to hear everything, and will find you unless you find a really good hiding place

The Bad- Accessing the codec or pause. It wouldn't be so bad if the start button had another function, but it is only useful when pressing the "A"(codec) or "B"(pause) button.
-Snake makes too much noise while walking. I don't remember him this noisy in the previous MGS games.
-Liquid Snake looks more like a member of a boy band than the leader of a terrorist group.

My thoughts on the game may change the more I play, but so far, I'm satisfied. I needed a good quality game for my GameCube this year, so this is one time I don't mind if the game is short.

MGS:TS sounds impressive so far. Although it may not blow everyone away like the REmake did with with the RE series. You heard it here first folks. MGS:TS is a "good quality game." I can't wait to play it.

Ha!!! Yea, I know Gadfly. I NEED this game! It's just that I recently bought 007 Everything or Nothing. Unlike most VGR members I only buy about one game a month. Actually Everything or Nothing is the only game I've bought so far this year! Isn't that crazy?!?! Ok you got me, I guess I'll pick up this game sometime next week or so. Alright I'll get to play MGS:TS on Sunday. When are you picking it up Gadfly? I'll just go pick some 20 dollar bills from the money tree I'm growing in my back yard. I would trade in some other games to Gamestop, but I already did that for Everything or Nothing. So my Gamecube collection consists of pretty much AAA games that I wouldn't trade in if my life depended on it. Like Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness, RE, RE0, etc.

One game a month is generally plenty. But some months, there's just no choice: you gave EA dollars, but Silicon Knights is far more worthy of them. Besides, I've been looking forward to your reactions to Twin Snakes especially because you've never played the original. Stealth games are NOT my favorite type of game by a longshot, but this one is really cool. Most of the nitpicks are things that were weakpoints in the first one, like all the yakking on the codec.

It's just such a classic, that even a heavyweight game like Zelda Windwaker gave it a nod with the little section where Link sneaks around in a cardboard box while searchlights rove the ground.

And like you said, Everything/Nothing is the first game you've got this year. . .so with you making Zero purchases for Jan and Feb, you could reasonably pick up three this month :)

I've never played a Harvest Moon game, so that's my second game purchase this March and first GC purchase this year for me. As far as I can tell, I should be able to play Twin Snakes in April.

The stealth game I'm most looking forward too this year on GC is Starcraft: Ghost. Have you checked out screenshots on that one lately? Damn!!! (Nintendojo has some new ones up.)

I beat TS yesterday. The game is pretty good and harder than I expected. The bosses are fairly easy but the guards are the *****y ones to get around. They notice even the slightest sound. In the Tank Hanger, it's kinda annoying to go onto the 2nd floor. The entire pathway is hollow. When you are discovered, guards come from all directions, gun blazing everywhere. The new action sequences are what I like about the new MGS the most, even though some of them are cheesy as hell. (when Meryl meets Snake for the 1st time or the bullet time matrix thing). There are more details to the story as well. As for the Codec (start + A) thing, it didnt' really bother me all that much. What bothered me was how I had problem move left or right when I pressed my back against the wall.

Overall, MGS:TS is awesome. I am really glad that Konami decided to remake this game. Hopefully, Square would do the same for FF7 & Xenogear in the near future.

Unlike the estimate given in my earlier post I'm thinking that I'll have to put off Twin Snakes until later this week. Well I should be posting my first impressions by the end of this week. I probably won't have my review posted until later this month. Even though the gameplay is rumored to be not very long, I've heard that the cinematics add significant value to this game. So much it spans double 2.5 Gig Gamecube discs. I really can't wait to play through this game. Please try to keep this thread free of spoilers. Feel free to post as many spoilers as you want, just give me a warning first. I haven't played through the PSX Metal Gear Solid.

It spans double 1.5 Gig discs, I think. The game is short if you skip all the movies and know exactly what to do. It has been a long time since I played MGS, so it took me 8 hours to beat the game. For example, I forgot how to fight Psycho Mantis and fought him the stupid way. He dudged 95% of my attack and it took me 45 mins to kill him. I read that all the sequence is 3 1/2 hours long. You can beat the game from 11/2 - 2 hours if you really good.

Oh man the game brought back good memories. I'm gonna be playing this more than 8 hours because I'm on a mission to get all of those dog tags!!!! Man those soldiers they are odd you can sneak up on them and sometime they freeze and other times they turn around and man those dog tags are gonna be a quest. And the back of the "package" I thought that was pretty funny. I forgot about that. I love this game.

I think if gamer reads this, he may get the impression the game is too short to be worth purchasing. To put it into perspective, there is a gamer in Japan who beat Metroid Prime in under an hour.

The first time I played Metal Gear Solid it took me a little over 15 hours to beat it. Yeah, if you skip the video footage and you know where everything is, it goes WAY faster, but in a game like this, first time through, you wouldn't want to skip the video footage, that's a big part of this game. I know "movie" style games are a dime a dozen now, but that's one of the things about this one that was so revolutionary at the time, it was one of the first games to really be done like a movie (lots of games had video clips, but this game was approached and directed like a film.)

I totally know what you mean about never wanting to trade in the gamecube games. I've got over 20 exclusive gamecube games, and they are all so unique, fun and cool that I can't bring myself to part with any of them. I've traded in lots of EA games on the gamecube, but stuff like Viewtiful Joe, Ikaruga, F-Zero, Pikmin, Monkey Ball. . . hell, even CUBIVORE I could never part with.

Ah. . . the money tree. I'm getting married in May, so that's where all my money's been going lately. Still, to answer your question about when I'm getting this game. . . well, I've never said this one was on my "to buy" list. I do believe it is a must buy game for someone who games exclusiviely on GC and has never played a Metal Gear game, but for me, since I was solely a PS1 gamer a few years ago and didn't buy an N64 until about the time the last game was released for it (Conker) I've never played a Harvest Moon game. So I'm spending my gamecube money this month on "Harvest Moon: It's a Wonderful Life."

I'm very much looking forward to playing Twin Snakes, but I just can't fit it in right now.

on the N64 thing, if you're curious, when Ps2 launched I thought I'd wait a year to see what MS and Nintendo came up with before deciding which system I'd get first, and so I spent that year catching up on N64 games, but I never did find Harvest Moon.

Thanks for the correction folken. The Gamecube disc does indeed hold 1.5 Gigs.

 I think I drank too much last night.

Although the spelling and punctuation was at least good enough to make my post legible.

As for the length of MGS:TS though I think 15 hours should do the job. I actually think the best length of most console games is 10-15 hours. Obviously some games like Zelda: Wind Waker should be much longer though. But some of my favorite Gamecube gaming moments have come from short but sweet games. Pikmin, Viewtiful Joe, Ikaruga, etc. are all great games. Not to mention the fact that you'll want to go back and play through it multiple times in many cases.

BTW Gadfly, I've never played a Harvest Moon game either. You'll have to let us know what you think. I really have been looking forward to Twin Snakes. I haven't missed a 007 game since Goldeneye though and I'm a big James Bond fan. The gamerankings.com scores are pretty close between Everything or Nothing and Twin Snakes, so I'll have to see for myself.

On a side note, congrats on your wedding Gadfly.

I heard there were no VR missions, which is unfortunate. I'm a junkie for the VR missions. I think I enjoyed the disk they put out on PS1 that was nothing but VR Tactics as much as I did the actual game.

Congratulations. I hope this game lives up to all your expectations. I've been looking forward to your reactions to MGS: Twin Snakes the most since you are perhaps the only VGR member who bought this game who hasn't played the original.

Also, thanks for letting me know my mailbox was full. I cleaned it out and you can PM me now. Thought I'd let you know I started the game you have raved about for the last year, Skies of Arcadia. I just played through the opening sequence to see what it was like. I hadn't really intended to play the game yet because I'm playing several other games right now, but Skies drew me in immediately. . . interesting characters and dialogue so far, great art style, and I love pirates and pirate ships. I found this RPG immediately compelling in a way that KOTOR wasn't. Whether or not I play any further right now, I'll definitely be playing Skies later on. And it was only $20. It's great, budget priced games like this that I haven't played that are going to cause me to not buy much new in 2004.

First I'll say that I found the learning curve to be pretty steep. I have the game on "EASY" mode, and I got totally owned on the first few levels. A tutorial or training mission would have helped. I was already fighting guards and completing mission objectives before I even knew what ANY of the buttons did.

In other words I died like 20 times on the first few missions!

:(

I finally have the basic control mechanics down now though. And I just had so much fun fighting Revolver Ocelot, I'm willing to overlook the uber long learning curve.

:)

I think the presentation of this game may top Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem having the best cinematic sequences in a Gamecube Game.

The cut scenes seem to provide drama, comic relief and important information at the right times. While the corny voice acting is usually a negative for a video game, it actually works in MGS:TTS's favor! The cut scenes are SO stereotypical action movie with cheesy acting! It's so cool! Solid Snake is of course the hero of the story! But Solid Snake is a way bigger bad @$$ than Van Damme, Schwarzenegger, Tom Cruz and Pierce Brosnan put together!

And I can already tell you that I'll be playing through this game at LEAST one more time. It seems like one of those single player games with great replay value like Eternal Darkness and Resident Evil.

What do you guys think?

BTW, I attached 2 screenshots from IGN. It's a before and after pair. Can someone please post the image in this thread because I don't know how.

no.1gamer

Well, I guess these aren't really my final thoughts because I'll be playing through this game at least one more time. MGS:TTS is the proper length for multiple playthroughs. There are also multiple ways to play through the entire game. So Twin Snakes has uber replay value.

Before I continue I'll post my final game data for you guys.

Game Level: Easy
Play Time: 14:51:31
Save: 35 Times
Continue: 91 Times
Alert Mode: 96 Times
Enemies: 120 Killed
Rations: 85 Used

Code Name: Komodo Dragon

You guys should all post your end game data too! I know that a lot of you played the game, but you sure don't seem to be talking about it much here.

BTW, where do I enter in my code on the internet? I don't understand what the purpose of the code I got is?!?!

No that is not a typing error. I had to continue 96 times. Most of them were at the beginning of the game though when I didn't know what the hell was going on. I already commented about that in my first impressions post. I also died a lot at the part where you have to fall down the communications tower right before you fight Liquid Snake in the Hind. It took me like 25 continues to figure out that right after you fall just keep pressing the Y button as fast as you can so Snake will grab onto the next ledge below him. I was trying to just press Y once right at the exact moment I passed the ledge. Remember that if you have trouble at that part.

The only part of the game I was disappointed with is that the codec sequences look like they were lifted strait from the Playstation. But other than that the entire game looks spectacular.

Some of the cut scenes have a sort of Quentin Tarantino uber violence to them. Meaning that they are overly graphic. Most of the cut scenes are very cinematic though and work perfectly. On a rare occasion they are long winded though (kind of like this post). But I never once skipped through a single scene just because the story of the game is so good.

I highly recommend this game to everyone looking for a cinematic mature game to play on their Gamecubes.

Come on guys what do you think? I'm the only one who seems to be talking about this game now.

I was just wondering what some of your final game scores were. You know......just to see how bad I am!

:p

Not only was this my first time playing Metal Gear Solid, but I'm a total newbie at the entire stealth genre!

Of course this game has much more to offer than stealth. You'll only be sneaking around for half of the game. The other half you spend watching cinematic sequences and fighting boss battles!

So does my Komodo Dragon code name mean I beat the game once? I can't wait to play through this game again.

PapaSmurf
05-30-2004, 08:31 AM
no, your ranking at the end of the game is for how you beat the game. It includes how many continues, saves, deaths, and everything else you did in the game.

The less people you kill, the less times you save, the less times you continue, and all the other stuff in the stats they give you when you beat the game, all equal to a better ranking and you failed that part with flying colors, but its not like I didn't the first time I played. Games alot easier with the stealth camo.

LoL, just got this game yesterday....
Though i think i procastinated too long for this game, and now that i have wont be able to finish it b4 uni starts.
Heres hoping...

I'll be playing through MGS:TTS for the 2nd time soon. The short length of the game is great for it's replay value. I'm sure my score this time around will be much higher than the one posted...

:p

In this forum we talk about what a great job silicon knights has done recreating this game, but does anyone find it odd that silicon knights logo isnt even shown in the cover of Metal Gear Solid : TS ? If u look at the back of the case u will see a silicon knight logo that is 1cm by 1cm big. About 2 times smaller than the size of a penny...

Could this be one of the reasons silicon knights left nintendo? ( i know it sounds farfetched, but i m sure there had to be some people in silicon knights that disliked this)

If you thought you were a top notch development team, wouldn't you be pissed doing a port.

I really don't consider MGS:TTS a "port." I've been lead to believe that Silicon Knights wanted to do this project from the beginning. MGS:TTS is more like a renovation than a mere "copy." The same goes for REmake.

BTW, MGS:TTS does have a nice Silicon Knights logo during start up though. But a small logo on the back of the box it has indeed...

Waco, that's kinda tacky and beneath you, calling this a "port." I know you know the difference between a complete remake and port. Port's are done all the time, and don't take that long. True remakes are few, and can take forever (i.e. Conker's Bad Fur Day on Xbox.) Really, all I can think of in the remake department are Conker, Resident Evil, and MGS: Twin Snakes.

Most "new" games are genre-clone rip-off's anyway, so really, to remake some of the best games of all time for a completely new generation of technology is a pretty cool thing, especially since the way its being done is for consoles that haven't seen the game before, and so perhaps are getting a new audience for the first time.

That said, I'd still rather see Silicon Knights doing original games. Eternal Darkness rules.

Tacky and beneath me, hardly, I can sink much lower. A complete remake is called a new game, Gadfly. Did they port the code over, highly unlikely, but the game remains largely intact, if you played the first, you know what to expect. RE for the gc is hands down one of the most-overrated titles on any system. The combat system was left intact and it is the definition of retrograde. Uggghhh!!! Craptastic, even back in the day, it was crappy, but it was brand new and you could forgive the crap camera and clumsy combat. Not anymore.

Ås for BFD, this game will be identical to the first and will feature a revamped graphics engine. IMO, this flat out sucks. They can't even stick one brand new level in, geez, Rare is lame, no wonder I could care less about what they put out. It's all about the multiplayer, that's where the new stuff comes in, to help push xbox live further into homes and justify M$'s marketing camaign, "It's good to play together."

Silicon Knights should not have been brought onboard to update a ps1 game for the gc. It was beneath their abilities. As it is, MGS:TS wasn't exactly a huge seller. Imo, a case of wasted effort and misspent resources. I might rent it one of these days, just to check it out. Other than that I have minimal interest in seeing old classic titles updated. If you're going to go the efforts they are, as in the case of a BFD, make a brand new addition to the series instead. Otherwise everybody's just spinning their wheels.

You're talking a lot of junk considering you haven't even played the game. MGS:TTS is completely overhauled from the ground up.

And Eternal Darkness "wasn't exactly a huge seller" either. That was a brand new title.

BTW, this isn't system wars Waco. So chill out...

If these so called overhauled games were coming at overhauled, read reduced, prices, I'd be a lot more forgiving. But when you're asking new game prices, I want a new game. It's as simple as that.

MGS:TTS was 40 bucks when it first came out.
