"there’s nothing scarier than hearing a Demon sneaking up from behind you." - VicariousVisions commenting on XBOX Dolby5.1 sound.
An interview with a developer at VicariousVisions dropped the bombshell, at least for people who love coop games, that the PC version won't have cooperative play like the old Doom games use to, but alas, the XBOX version will.
"Doom 3 Xbox is now in simultaneous development with Doom 3 PC with strong working relationships between the teams. Neither team is simply looking at Doom 3 Xbox as “incremental” to the PC. We’re committed to creating the best action-shooter on the Xbox. We’re lucky in that it’s based on the content and game play from id, but there’s a huge amount of creativity needed to make Doom 3 a great console experience on the Xbox. We work together to make sure that Doom 3 for the Xbox is perfectly suited for that platform, runs fast, and that the atmosphere and gameplay are terrifying and well balanced. We’re even including new features like co-op play, which require a tremendous amount of creativity and planning from everyone at VV and id." -VicariousVisions
I know I played coop Halo way more than I played single player, so this will be a great feature on XBOX. I think it could be even better than Halo's coop play, because this game is slower, scarier, no medi-kits, no shields.
"Now, after many months of development, I think it’s safe to say that players will be stunned when they see the type of graphics fidelity that Doom 3 is able to present on the Xbox." - VicariousVisions
So you see, its not about XBOX ruining PC games, its about developers doing things the right way. If its done the right way, both versions can be great and well suited for each platform. However there won't be any online play between PC and XBOX gamers.
"We are making a lot of console specific changes, so that, for example, the game plays great with a console controller or is well balanced in multiplayer. With all the changes that are being made, it will not be compatible with the PC version. " -VicariousVisions
Here are some more interesting bits...
"There’s a ton of work going into the balance and pacing of the game as well as the control mechanisms -– the player needs to feel connected with the game and a part of the environment in order to suspend their disbelief and really draw them into the atmosphere and terror of the game. We also draw players in with true Dolby 5.1 surround sound support -– there’s nothing scarier than hearing a Demon sneaking up from behind you."
"It’s truly designed to be a console experience, specifically taking advantage of the Xbox hardware, and will no doubt be the best looking game on the platform."
"We knew that PS2 and Gamecube were out of the question due to particular graphics requirements (global illumination, normal mapping, shadow volumes etc.), but we knew Xbox had a shot. "
These guys are sounding really cocky, I love cocky, it tells me they know they got a winner on their hands, with all their experience working on XBOX, if I was Bill Gates I'd bring these boys into the fold and have them create an exclusive XBOX2 first person shooter.

Co-op? That's excellent. I wish more games would take advantage of that aspect of gameplay. Playing the same old four player deathmatches over and over is getting kind of stale.
The only thing I'd see wrong with it is co-op could affect the pacing of the game. God knows Halo on the higher difficulty settings is a totally different game when played by two people with the infinite check points created by a teammate and the extra shotgun pointed at the Flood. Also, it may not be a scary or atmospheric if you've got some one else right next to you. Not as many surprises. Still sounds like a good idea to me though.

DOOM III will indeed be another FPS that'll blow anything out the water the GC or the PS2 brings to the table in this particular genre. With games like this and Halo 2 coming I think its safe to say that by the end of this year the catagory of shooter of the year is going to be dominated by the FPS's on the Xbox.No ifs, ands,or buts about it.
Good post man.All that sounds reallllllllll good.I do plan to own DOOM III for the Xbox whenever it comes out.

But yet in your jaded eyes Carmack's an idiot for making the Xbox's port of the upcoming DOOM III a little better than the PC version. Its called either get an Xbox for you can play DOOM III with those wonderful extras, or you can have a Coke and a smile and shut the #### up and enjoy the PC version.Besides lets not talk about how some games are dumbed down when they are ported to other things shall we? That would be one argument you would lose on.

I guess it could be seen as a balancing act.
Wanna play the version without the hassle and with co-op added? Get the Xbox version
Wanna play the version with the best graphics and with the huge addition of mods? Get the PC version.
I do have to wonder why Vicarious Visions threw in co-op for the Xbox but Id neglected it for the PC version...it wouldn't be hard to add.

Maybe they didn't think the feature would be used much on the PC, that's the only thing I could think of.

What the developers are doing for the PC and Xbox versions of Doom III is simply balancing and to me, being an Xbox-PS2-PC gamer, I see nothing bad about this. I will be getting Doom III for my Xbox definitely.
By the end of 2004, Xbox will rule the FPS genre and take note that Halo 2 and Doom III will rule the genre blasting the stuff out of every other shooter on other consoles.

Looks like they're trying to cash in on the folks who bought two versions of Halo and three copies of Soul Calibur 2

There is a thread in this very forum dedicated to explaining how the Xbox version will look just as good as the PC version, is there not?

It looks close..but even the developers said that it would be missing a few lighting touches, effects, and whatnot. Judging from the one screenshot I've seen it does look a bit muddier and seems to be missing some of the enviroment shadows.

The PS2 doesnt have one nor does the Gamecube.Only PC gamers and Xbox owners will have the luxuary of playing one of the best FPS's of 2004.Other than that stop your belly-aching.

I think Doom3 is going to look much better than Halo2, only for one reason, scope. Halo2, is going to be much broader in scope than Doom3. 12-16 players online, vehicles, ships, coop play, control of different types of characters.
Doom3, you are only going to be controlling the main character. From what I know, there are no vehicles. The maps do not have to account for flight, remember Halo played out vertically, from the ground to the top of ridges, mountains, where you had to fly ships, and even engage enemies from ships. Everything about Halo2, is going to be even much more expansive.
Now as far as the XBOX Doom3 shot vs the PC Doom3 shot. I'd say they look pretty close, but it is still hard to tell because they are different scenes. On top of that, the XBOX game is going to look, feel, and play consistently the same across everyone's XBOX. For PC guys, they will all get different experiences depending on their pc's power, memory, video card, hard drive performance, system configuration and optimization.
That said, we all know on a top end PC, Doom3 is going to be the most gorgeous game ever, and Doom3 on the XBOX the most gorgeous console game. Either way, you can't lose. I don't think gamers are going to base their decision on anything, but which system they like the most. If you like PC gaming, you are going to get the PC version ,if you like console gaming, you are going to get the console version.

The PS2 and the GC will be left out in the cold while PC/Xbox owners gets the dibs on two of the best FPS's of 2004.It really doesnt matter which version looks better does it?

Why do you buy multiplat games for the Xbox exclusively if it doesn't matter which looks best?

Better sound, better control, the possibilities of downloadable content at a later date, and the fact the Xbox's version will be sporting better graphics.Anything else?

So basically everything that the PC version of Doom 3 will have over the Xbox version (minus co-op)..yet it doesn't matter when it comes to an Xbox vs. PC game?

Why do you buy multiplat games for the Xbox exclusively if it doesn't matter which looks best?
That question doesn't really apply. What you need to be asking is why you bought an XBOX. Because I don't have a GC or a PS2. And I didn't have a PSOne or a N64. I was a PC gamer, like yourself and my last console was SNES. I got my first PC in '92, and I completely abandoned console gaming, and was immediately hooked to games like Syndicate Wars, Flight Sims. Then when PC gaming and the internet took off in the mid 90's there was nothing on the N64 and PSOne, to compare with games like Warcraft, Diablo, Age of Empires, Command&Conquer, IndyCar, Viper Racing, Baldur'sGate, etc etc etc. I just thought console gaming was way behind.
Then I bought a DC for XMAS after seeing it while I was in Japan. So I came home and though DC would change console gaming, while it didn't, I did enjoy playing games like SoulCalibur, Toy Commander, etc., with my family, and I was like maybe console gaming isn't that bad. But, I was gaming like 20% DC but still 80%PC.
So, when the next round of consoles were announced, I was going to get one, but I didn't know which. After PS2 launched in Japan, and reading about its failures, I was shocked, cause I was believing all the hype about how great it was. Then MS announced XBOX and I was interested, I've never been afraid of being an early adopter. Of course I already had a widescreen HDTV and Dolby setup, so when I found out the hardware specs, I was really interested. And when I found out they would be doing online gaming, I was interested. Cause I was already on the internet gaming zone, which MS bought, and I was already playing some MS games, like Age of Empires. Of course, being a PC gamer, I too was awaiting Halo on the PC. And when MS bought Bungie, I knew I was getting an XBOX day one.
Now, I didn't realize how much I'd enjoy the XBOX, and I never thought it would make me stop PC gaming. But after about 6 months of XBOX, the last PC game i was playing was Blade of Darkness by codemasters. Then the next I played was NeverWinterNights, and then FreedomForce. After FreedomForce and NWN I haven't played a PC game, and don't plan to until FreedomForce2 comes out. As far as why I buy multiplatform games on XBOX, simple, its the only console I own. If you are talking about XBOX/PC games(which i don't consider multiplatform), simple, even though I now have to high power PCs, one with a 256MB Radeon, I simply enjoy playing on XBOX more than on a PC. Its just better on LIVE, better on my TVs, with my sound system, on my couch or in my bed. I really don't even think its close, I even like the controller better than keyboard and mouse.
But, if Halo never came to XBOX, its a chance, I woulda never experienced XBOX, and i'd be here arguing how great the PC is, completely ignorant.
