View Full Version : Why is everyone so obsessed with the Gamecube's price tag??

I've been going through reading some of the posts, and want to know why everyone rags on Gamecube for it's $99 price tag? How is it a statement towards the system? And besides... What difference does it make, anyway?
As far as I'm concerned, Lower price = More sales. I think just volume alone will mort than make up for the lower price. If more people can afford to go out and buy the system, they will. It just makes the system available to a larger market.
And I'm sure they will more than make up for any loss with all their stupid Memory cards, Controllers, and other useless add-ons that people will run out and buy. ( I may support Nintendo, but I still think all of their damn add-ons they sell are stupid and useless :o )

It's just a horse racing thing. Some people here are rooting for xbox, and some for GC since the two are in such close competition and fans of both systems really like them, and so want them to be succesful and continue to get new games(I haven't seen any real passion for the Ps2 though everyone likes it. It is like a microwave, ubiquitous.)
When one horse gets a little bit ahead, there's always some sort of sour grapes. GC may have pulled ahead slightly in total global sales over the holidays, so of course xbots gotta throw a little mud. . . .no one is buying the GC because there are any good games on the system, its just because it costs less. But then of course, it doesn't havea dvd player or a harddrive, so it should cost less.
It's kinda like back when GC was in third, rather than neck and neck with xbox: the xbox "only sold because of T&A and the bloodlust of horny stupid teenagers with no damn taste in games." Actually I still kinda feel that way about much of the xbox fanbase, judging by what they buy and what they ignore.

I agree with what you said about the GC, 'cause it's all completly true. The fact that it doesn't play DVDs (or even CDs for that matter), and the lack of a hard drive forcing you to buy expensive memory cards that hold very few game saves, was a major let down. The $99 price tag suits it with all of the costly add-ons, as well. I also think the GC would have had more success if a design like the Gamecube Q had been manufactured without the hefty $499 price that it's available for now.

Can you honestly say that the hardware numbers would've still been like it was over the last two to three months if Nintendo wouldnt have dropped the GC down to $99 dollars?

Yea, you figure the average DVD player is still going for about $100.00 at Best Buy. I'm not exactly sure what goes into a DVD player to warrant the cost but it seems to come at a hefty price.
Just as Gadfly was saying, it's just a quick response made by Gamecube haters against anything positive about the GCN. If Nintendo could afford to loose as much money as the Xbox on each console they would be giving away Gamecubes for free! Wouldn't that be sweet.
Few people here remember that when the Xbox was first unveiled the price tag on it was $600. Of course back then we all thought it was a PC disguised as a gaming console. Now we know that it really is a gaming console that plays watered down PC games.

Actually, I've noticed that the average price for DVD players has gone down considerably. For instance, the nice Toshiba DVD player I bought 9 months ago for $90 is now at $60 - and I see a lot of comparable DVD players at that price these days.

So true, so true.

Would Nintendo have sold as many GC consoles over the last three months at a $149 pricetag? No.That right there is the entire thread in a nutshell.
Right now who's on 1st? Sony with the PS2.Who's on 2nd? MS with the Xbox.and who's bringing up the rear on 3rd? Nintendo with the GC.Game over.Oh its true, its damn true.

Would Microsoft have sold many Xbox's at the start without a hard drive? Doubtful, The harddrive seems to be one of the main reasons it has done so well. A pity it may not be in xbox2. Whats it matter what price Gamecube is? Does it really matter? Every system has a reason for its sales, Doesn't mean you got to point it out to us every time the gamecube is mentioned. But I will use your logic and fight fire with fire by pointing out how the xbox sold because of the harddrive. Its hardly game over, Nintendo came above xbox once and they can do it again.
