2004 looks to be a really good year for horror fans. I'm in the mood for all things horror right now for some reason, so here's a horror thread (not just survival-horror). I'm just going to lay out the things I want to talk about (only the first one is strictly a systems wars topic.) Feel free to address any or all of the following horror gaming topics:
1.) Which system is the "must own" system for horror fans, or at least the most essential.
2.) Which upcoming 2004 horror game has your pulse racing the fastest: Resident Evil 4, Silent Hill 4, or something else?
3.) Which is the scariest horror game you've played; which is your favorite?
4.) Most under-rated or relatively over-looked horror title?
5.) Anything else about horror gaming you think needs mentioned?
I'm going to respond to some of these in a separate post. I'm definitely not an expert on horror games, so I'm hoping to learn something from any horror fans out there. I tend to consider "horror" fairly broadly, beyond just the survival horror like RE, SH, and Fatal Frame. Even Doom III (a FPS) and Killer 7 strike me as having a lot of elements of horror movies in them (psychological horror in the case of Killer 7.)
And in the spirit of "all things horror" It would be cool if you'd include the following info somewhere:
--What is your favorite horror film?
--What is your favorite horror novel?
--Who (or what) is your favorite horror villain?
I had to chime in as a PC gamer on this topic. Fantastic gaming horror can be found in [1] System Shock2, [2] Undying, [3] Alien vs Predator Gold.

1.) Which system is the "must own" system for horror fans, or at least the most essential.?
Is Resident Evil still essential, or is it dying? I don't know. Because aside from the brilliant Eternal Darkness, that's all GC has got. What about xbox vs ps2 on horror? Are there any good horror titles that haven't eventually made their way to Xbox. . . will Fatal Frame 2 make it? If you are patient, the xbox versions of things like Fatal Frame and Silent Hill 2 have had lots of extras plus sound and graphics upgrades, and if there's any genre of game where upgraded sound and graphics count, its definitely horror, which is all about atmosphere and realistic gore. Seriously, are there any killer exclusive PS2 horror games aside from Silent Hill 3?
2.) Which upcoming 2004 horror game has your pulse racing the fastest: Resident Evil 4, Silent Hill 4, or something else??
RE4 is shaping up to be something special in terms of graphics and sound, and even the story is seeming cool, like they are injecting new life into the series by going in a really different direction. One horror game that has my interest right now is "The Suffering" after playing the xbox demo level. Not the most technologically advanced game, but atmosphere out the wazoo. A haunted deathrow? Are you actually guilty of murdering your family? The demo gave me goosebumps and made me laugh, and really made me want to know what happens next in the story.
3.) Which is the scariest horror game you've played; which is your favorite??
Eternal Darkness freaked me out more than anything. I guess that was mostly due to it seeming at least a little bit plausible to me from my conspiracy theory/HP Lovecraft phase. This is horror that stimulates your brain in addition to the gore factor. Has human history been engineered by evil beings that are served by a cabal of human co-conspirators? Great story telling, many superb creepy moments, lots of psychological head trips with the "sanity meter." Incredible graphics(despite some N64ish textures), sound and the best "fixed camera" ever used in a game, IMO. (It seems like all horror games have a flaw--RE; poor controls, Fatal Frame terrible combat--and Eternal Darkness suffered from an imbalanced weapon system, the sword was always more effective than the gun, making all the guns obsolete.)
4.) Most under-rated or relatively over-looked horror title??
I loved Parasite Eve. I pray for a sequel, or even one of those GC "remakes." I don't know that is was that obscure, but it never reached the prominence of RE an SH. There is no other game musical score (aside from Zelda:Ocarina) that impresses me like the superb Parasite Eve score. If you haven't listened to the various musical themes in Parasite Eve, do a google search and download them NOW. They are better than the scores for Excorist and Halloween.
--What is your favorite horror film?
--What is your favorite horror novel?
--Who (or what) is your favorite horror villain?
FIlm--Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" (runners up: The Shining, Rosemary's Baby.)
Novel--Stephen King's "The Stand."
Villain--Pinhead from "Hellraiser"----"Do I look like someone who cares what God thinks?"

Well, my reply is probably atypical... but, oh well... I'm sure you'll get plenty of good responses - and maybe even a good laugh out of this one.
With regards to #3...
To tell you the truth... I don't like survival-horror games. Or at least, I don't think I do. I haven't really played any of them.
- I played about 10 minutes of RE2 on the N64. But was so confounded by the controls that I couldn't even make it to the end of the first street!
- I played about 20-25 minutes of Eternal Darkness (which I do still have btw). But the game told me that my "brand new" GameCube was broke (that it coudn't read or write to the memory card, or something like that) - and I beleived it; and then got laughed at by the guys at the vg store, when I tried to return my "busted" GC. I've never been able to forgive it for that. And I haven't played ED since.
I have been wondering just how much spookiness I can handle though. I don't think it's very much. I'm pretty sure - no, make that just about positive - that I couldn't take the RE's. But ED... well, I don't know... how scary is ED - compared to other S/H games? If it's not bad, I just might try it again. (Whenever it is I can finally forgive it, that is. :p )
I gotta tell ya tho'... Return to Castle Wolfenstein spooks the hell out of me! And so did the Flood levels in Halo! Now I know you guys are probably going to laugh at this... but... oh well... those two games are tied for the scariest games I've ever played - as well, they are my favorites.
Serious Sam is another scary game. But... it's a different kind of scary... and doesn't really belong in this thread, I admit. Boy does that game get your heart racing tho'! Dang!
And in the spirit of "all things horror" It would be cool if you'd include the following info somewhere:
--What is your favorite horror film?
--What is your favorite horror novel?
--Who (or what) is your favorite horror villain?
Film? That's a tough one! I gotta break it down like this...
- Scariest = When A Stranger Calls. (Then probably Scream 1 - especially the beginning! Shoooot.)
- Horror "Type A" = Dang this is hard. Jaws, Jurassic Park, Aliens. Though those three movies are amongst my favorites of all time, I almost consider them to be more "adventure" or "action" than horror. Now Creepshow - there's a classic horror movie! But... I'm going to have to go with... George Romero's Day of the Dead.
- Horror "Type B" = well... before I name number one, I first want to give props to Tremors! I love that movie! But...there can be no doubt about it... Evil Dead II is number one!
Favorite horror novel = The Wolfen by Whitley Strieber. The movie was awful tho'! Don't judge the book by the movie! They weren't even close to being the same!
Favorite villain? Me!
Oh, you mean besides me? Well, even though I think the answers you're probably looking for are "Jason", Freddy", and Michael Myers", and the like... I still have to name Rhodes (from Day of the Dead) as my favorite horror villain. What a pr**k!

Ah one of my favorite genres. :D
#1 PS2... yeah RE is exclusive to the Cube, and so is Eternal Darkness which was surprisingly good, but PS2 has Silent Hill 2, 3, and 4, Clock Tower 3, Fatal Frame 1 and 2, Manhunt has a very strong survival horror feel and the upcoming RE Outbreak (online) Siren and Kuon, if Kuon comes to the states.
#2 Siren, cause it's new and sounds very different and RE Outbreak. What the hell (pun intended ) ever happened to The Lost?
#3 The scariest so far is Fatal Frame 2. My favorite is the first Silent Hill.
#4 That's hard to say. PE didn't strike me so much as survival horror as survival action. But I will say it's long overdue for a sequel. I'm surprised it hasn't made an appearance on PS2 at this point.
#5 Fatal Frame is about the only survival horror game that takes skill. Meaning these games mainly bring atmosphere and story first, gameplay second and the puzzles are often uninspired. I think it's time to take survival horror gameplay out of the tight camera angles and claustrophobic environments and open them up... kinda like a GTA meets RE.
Fav horror film: I can't pick just one. :p The Exorcist, The Omen, Re-Animator and the Legend of Hell House is very underrated. Psycho while more thriller than horror is still pretty damn scary and my fav zombie picks of all time, Night/Dawn of the Living Dead. There's a ton of stuff from the 70s I liked... like the Haunting, House on Haunted Hill etc. but I don't remember them very well.
Novel: I gotta go with Frankenstein.
Villain: the Invisible Man

You've gotta try ED again. It's not really survival horror in the sense that its not that hard to survive. . . I mean, its not like you're limited to items, saves and stuff like in RE. Resident Evil is actually one of the my least favorite horror games, though I'm finding myself really intrigued by some of the changes that are being implemented for RE4.
That's cool you mentioned RTCW. I don't like to limit horror to just the overt "survival horror" games. Definitely Nazi-Occult experiments. . . I mean that whole story is a horror story. I liked that one a lot.
By the way, I appreciate you admitting you tried to take ED back when it told you it was busted. That takes guts. But really, the game doesn't pull to many of those meta-headtrips, like "controller disconnected." If you take the time to learn the magick system, I think you'll find the story rewarding. The game has its flaws. . . its not the hardest game for sure, but that just keeps the story flowing well, and it is one of the better stories in a game I've ever seen. .. I mean, from Charlemaigne to the Persian Gulf War, it does the whole "history as conspiracy" thing really well.
As far as how "scary" is ED in comparison. . . overall, its pretty tolerable, but there was one unexpected scene. . . my fiance and I played this game together (its a one player game, but she was the brains and I had the controller--she loved the story so much she forbade from playing unless she was there too) and we were really into it, more so than a movie, and then this scene just freakin happened, and I thought I was going to have a heart attack. I mean literally. We had to pause the damn game and pace around for a little bit and catch our breath. That may be corny, and I know it was because we'd been playing for a while and were totally absorbed, but damn.
Your film you mentioned: "When a Stranger Calls." I'd totally forgotten about that one. That one scared the crap out of me in a very serious way. . . "Have you checked the children." shiver. . . . .
Thanks for the response. I hope there are more horror fans around here. I'm looking forward to hearing what everyone is into.

1) My must-own system for horror games would have to be the PS2. Every Silent Hill game, Resident Evil Code Veronica & Outbreak, Fatal Frame 1 & 2, Manhunt...the list goes on and on.
2) Probably Silent Hill 4 has me the most excited. The Silent Hill games are always freaky with that "white noise", levels that change when you leave & come back and freaky-deaky monsters that shake and spasm, crawl along walls...you get the idea.
3) Scariest horror game for me would probably be....the first Silent Hill. The scene where the demon babies start attacking you in the alley and you realize you can't get away no matter what you do.... My favorite horror title would have to go to Silent Hill 3. It gave a nice resolution to the first game and poor, poor Harry! Damn, that is evil what they did to him!
4) Most under-rated horror title would be Fatal Frame II in my opinion. No advertising budget, no big word-of-mouth. Yet, this game is freaky as hell.
5) Yeah, be sure to check out the upcoming PS2 game Siren. It looks pretty scary and apparently, Sony pulled the add for it in Japan because it was frightening small children.
6) Favorite horror film? Well, I would have to go with Silence of the Lambs. The part where Hanibal is talking to Clarice about the "screaming of the lambs" freaks me out and sends chills down my spine. Anthony Hopkins did a bang-up job in this flick.
7) Favorite horror novel? Well, I haven't read that many...but Stephen King's Pet Semetary freaked me out. To this day, whenever I see a grey cat I think of Church.
8) Favorite horror villain would be Anthony Hopkins as Hanibal Lecter. But I also have to give a nod to the Alien in the first Alien movie. When that little sucker burst out of the dudes chest...that totally weirded me out. But then, I still get freaked when I think about "Brundell-fly" in the first Fly film with Jeff Goldblum. When he puked on that guy's hand and ankle and ripped his foot off....uggghhhh. I was just a kid when I saw it and I had a G.I.Joe figure that looked just like that guy. I chucked "yo Joe" in the woods and never looked for him again. Creepy stuff.

Maybe i m weird but i dont find horror videogames that scary.
I gave it a real chance, i picked a day when no one was home, i thinkn it was at night on a thrusday: I turned off the lights, got the surround sound ready and popped in RE:Code Vernica on my DC. After gaming for an hour, i just didnt see what the whole thrill was, m i missing something or does it get better later on? After that, i tried Dino Crisis on the DC, and played that for 1.5 hours. Never played those games again, whats scary about them, are u guys scared by them or is it the suspense that u guys enjoy? I have no clue what makes these games so famous. How can u guys tolerate that inferno stepping sounds?!
Anyway,
fav horror villian would have to be Freddy, he scared the crap out of me when i was 7 years old. My fav, scary movie, would be hmm...freddy Vs jason cuz i felt out of all the scary movies I've seen (which isnt many) that had the best plot

2.) I'm looking foward to RE4 perhaps more than any other Gamecube game this year (not just survival horror games).
3.) I'll have to go with Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requim also. Unfortunately I was already told the spoiler about the "memory card erase" trick when I played it. It was done very well though. (For anyone who hasn't experienced it) You have the option to delete all data on your memory card. But it's difficult to tell if you're selecting yes or no. If I hadn't known about it I would have jumped off my couch and started going crazy. All the other little mind @#$%s work extremely well IMO. The story line also messes with your head as well. That's why Eternal Darkness is a level scarier than any other survival horror game I've played.

I know I've said this like...I dunno...ten thousand times before, but the scariest game ever in my opinion has to be Thief 1. I think it's actually the only game that has literally frightened me so much that at one point I smacked my keyboard off my desk and almost flew back in my chair cuz something had somehow managed to sneaked up behind me.
Thief is also home to the creepiest character in videogame history..The Haunts. Just listening to the sound they make is creepy enough, you'll always hear them long before you see them...quoting scriptures in a bunch of whispery voices layered on top of each other and rattling chains. Then...if you're unlucky..they'll spot you and coming charging at you full speed laughing in a million different voices. It's all good stuff.
Hell, just listen to it...creepy good stuff. I hope they make a return in Thief 3.

Now it is especially scary if you had nightmares from the movie when you were a kid. As the marine you have nothing but the sound of your motion tracker surrounding you. All of the sudden there is movement and random battles with Aliens is enough to make your heart rate soar. You can see them on your tracker and hear them coming from the ceiling or the walls. You grip that gamepad like your assault rifle..... and fire away for its either you are them.... that has to die.

Recently, I would have to say The Ring. That little girl freaks me out.
The Blair Witch Project would have been scary. But somebody told me it was a hoax before I saw it at the theater. So obviously the entire concept was ruined for me.

Good topic, Gadfly, I too have horror on the brain. I think one of the most horrible sounds in the world is that dental drill. Imagine this. A dark dental office. Your locked inside. You here the innocent giggles of a small child (think Gage, in Pet Cemetery). A window lets in little slits of moonlight. Demonic look of glee faintly visible on the face lurking in the shadows. Then that sound of the drill. And it's getting closer....Needless to say, I have the grill of tweaker on welfare.
Anyway, back to gaming. I love the Silent Hill series. I've just beat Silent Hill 3 and am playing through again with the light saber and unlimited submachinegun. Though the original Silent Hill had some seriously scary sound effects. I liked the whole spooky, empty school setting. I can't wait to see where they go with the series. I hope they improve the story a bit. Silent Hill 3's story wasn't that scary, but it did provide a bit of closure for those who played Silent Hill.
I'd have to say, for me Fatal Frame II was the scariest game I've played. Somehow, Asian ghosts seem scarier to me than good ol' red-blooded American ones. I don't know why.
I thought The Ring was a bit creepy, but I'm a bigger fan of zombie flicks like Dawn of the Dead or Day of the Dead . Of course when speaking of horror movies one must always give a shot out to Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell for Evil Dead (all of them).
I'm actually looking forward to the X-Files game and The Suffering and Siren and Silent Hill 4 and...Did I get them all.
I also like the Puppet Master, Phantasm, and all the old 70's movies about possessed cars, houses, kids, and household pets. Everyone got possessed back in the 70's. Must of been all the cocaine they were using.
I'm looking forward to great a year full of horror games/movies. Signed,
Damian
P.S. Has anyone seen Gingersnaps. Is it any good. I have a hard time buying or renting a horror movie named after cookies. I saw a preview for Gingersnaps sequel that looked decent. Any feedback would be nice. Thanks

"The dentist drill. . . the grill of a tweaker on welfare" You are one twisted puppy.
If medical sounds freak you out, you should hear the latest CD by Fantomas; Delirium Cordia, its just 1 track, 74 minutes long, basically an ambient soundscape, expirmental music piece. The whole thing is essentially a musical interpretation of the last hour of someones life in surgery.
Also, the previous Fantomas album, which is a lot more accessible (it has actual songs and melodies on it) is called the directors cut, and has hardcore covers of film music, much of it from horror films, like Rosemaries Baby and the Omen. The Director's Cut is a must own album for anyone who likes experimental hardcore rock and film scores.

Lots of good suggestions so far in everyone's responses.
I'm playing Fatal Frame on xbox right now; very atmostpheric freaky even if it does have some lousy object interaction (you get snagged on everything) and some other problems. From what everyone is saying, the second one sounds much better, and I hope xbox get a version since I don't have a PS2. I may actually commit the blasphemy of buying The Suffering instead of Ninja Gaiden (I'm already getting Harvest Moon in March, and I don't buy more than 2 games a month. . . couldn't play 'em if I did.) Oh well, with Ninja Gaiden set to sell a bazillion copies, it'll end up in the used section pretty quick, probably.
Sounds like PS2 is getting the votes as the essential horror system. What's this "Siren" game several people mentioned? Guess I'll have to look that up at one of the game sites.
On Horror movies, I noticed how ancient the ones I listed were--and a lot of other people listed pretty old horror movies. . .I guess it generally seems to me like the era of best horror movies was a long time ago, and we went through this really long period of crappy teen-ager oriented sex-comedy horror films like the Scream movies. I guess they were entertaining enough for what they were, but they weren't scary like some of Hitchcock's films, or the Excorcist, or even Poltergeist.
But someone mentioned The Ring. That was the scariest movie in recent years, which reminded me that there have been several actual scary movies in recent years that have been pretty good. What Lies Beneath and The Gift where both disturbing horror/thriller movies, and The Gift was one a lot of people didn't see (it was written by Billy Bob Thornton, and based on his mother who was supposedly a psychic.) I also thought the first Jeepers Creepers (well, the first part of the movie anyway) was pretty scary. My fiance' was at a convention in NY for the weekend a while back and I rented it and watched it alone; something about being lost in Hickville, USA is just totally frightening (that's what's so scary about Texas Chainsaw Massacre. . . you're stuck at the mercy of a bunch of insane texans.) In fact, now I realize why I'm going through a horror movie/game phase. . . the whole country is at the mercy of an insane texan!!!!! ARGGGGGGGG!!!!!

1. Definately the PS2, at least in terms of getting the games first.
2. I will probably give RE4 a rent because I have not really tried the series since RE2. I am curious to see how the series has progressed.
3. The scariest game I have ever played was the original Resident Evil on PS. I doubt that it would be scary if I went back and tried it now, but at the time, it seemed like a revolutionary concept.
4. Here I would have to say Onimusha even though it is probably not really underrated. I just had not seen it mentioned in the thread yet, and it was excellent.
5. Here is a topic that begs to be brought up Gadfly. Most overrated survival horror game---Eternal Darkness hands down. There was a game that had a really cool story, but was ruined by those silly insanity effects and a terribly lame combat system. The insanity effects almost rendered the game, dare I say, cheesy.
As far as horror films go I will have to give the nod to The Exorcist. Most of the time when I watch horror films I just end up laughing at them because they are so cliche that they are not really scary. Now The Exorcist had nothing funny about it. That movie set the standard.

<a href="http://www.callofcthulhu.com">Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth</a> for the Xbox and PC looks pretty cool. Graphics are a bit dated, but I like the premise and atmosphere. It's based on the writings of H.P. Lovecraft. Seems to be following in the footsteps of the old PC game Alone in the Dark (the first one is the only one worth talking about).

Which is the scariest horror game you've played; which is your favorite?
I've never played any Resident Evil or Silent Hill game, but the PC game System Shock 2 is pretty damn scary. It's 5 years old now but it's still really, really atmospheric. The graphics, obviously, are dated but the sound effects have never been surpassed.
The Aliens vs Predator games had some scary moments, but they were more of the monster-jumps-from-shadows variety. System Shock 2 started to play with your head. It was a different level altogether.

1.) Which system is the "must own" system for horror fans, or at least the most essential.
Depends on what horror fans consider to be "must own" horror games.
2.) Which upcoming 2004 horror game has your pulse racing the fastest: Resident Evil 4, Silent Hill 4, or something else?
Probably Resident Evil 4. Although I'm very interested in Killer 7 - which, as you say, could be more of a psychological horror kind of thing.
3.) Which is the scariest horror game you've played; which is your favorite?
The scariest horror game I've played is probably the original Silent Hill for PS1 - it had the creepiest atmosphere and had a lot of tension, but a hackneyed storyline.
My favorite horror game has to be Eternal Darkness. Extremely moody, atmospheric environments, a incredible story and the way it messes with the player's head is unmatched.
Just reading how Shlockstar was tricked into thinking his Gamecube was broken is classic beyond belief. I have to admit I thought that my Cube was going on the fritz too, until I waited a bit longer for the "error" to disappear. Other "errors" that messed with your mind - controller errors, memory card being "erased", tv being turned off or muted - I won't give too much else away.
The sanity effects for the characters were really creative as well. While, the effects weren't so much "scary" as they were "bizarre" or even "humorous" at times, the overall element they added was key to the atmosphere of the game.
Oh, and the one scene that you referred to that freaked you and your woman out - it made me fall off my couch.
4.) Most under-rated or relatively over-looked horror title?
Eternal Darkness - just going by the relatively poor sales.
5.) Anything else about horror gaming you think needs mentioned?
Just that most horror games are like most horror movies - they are entirely too un-scary.
--What is your favorite horror film?
If we are talking actually scary horror films, then The Shining, with Jack Nicholson, takes the prize. Now THAT is some creepy atmospheric setting going on over dere. The isolation, the madness, the creepy twin girls, rivers of blood pouring from an elevator shaft - it just doesn't get scarier in my opinion. Well maybe not scary so much as it is just overwhelmingly creepy. Also, have to mention Stanley Kubrick at the height of his directorial prowess.
If we are talking non-scary horror films, then the Evil Dead series takes the cake, with Army of Darkness being # 1 in my book. Pretty much any Sam Raimi movie is tops in my book.
--What is your favorite horror novel?
Not too into horror novels, but I read At The Mountains of Madness, by H.P. Lovecraft, a few months ago. If you get into the utter insignificance of mankind in the face of an ancient, ultimate evil, this might be the book for you. Or if you have a penchant for 6 foot tall, albino penguins.
Otherwise, the book Monkey Shines, by Stephen King, which is a collection of short-stories, is pretty good.
--Who (or what) is your favorite horror villain?
Darth Vader.
Not exactly a strict "horror" villian, but seeing the original Star Wars at around age 2 - 3 ( I was 1 years old when it first came out in 1977), Vader made quite the impression on me as a character to be feared.
I mean, one of the first things you see Vader do is hold some poor shlub up by the throat, 2 feet in the air and then carelessly throw his corpse into a pile of bodies when his usefullness was at an end.
Plus the skull-like, mechanical mask, the labored, wheezy breathing and the ability to choke you to death with his mind is pretty scary.

1) I would say the PS2... there are many great titles I feel like I'm missing out on because I don't have one. The libraray of survival horror games on the PS2 is one of the reasons I look forward to buying one.
2) Definitetly RE4, so many changes made from the previous titles Im eager to see how the game play has evolved.
3) The REmake for the cube. Never played the original. Heres a funny story, you know how during the game you acquire memos that give you helpful information? Well some how I over looked the one about the crimson heads, so I neglected decapitating the zombies or burning any bodies. So when that first one got up and started bolting toward me I almost fell out of my chair, boy that freaked me out!! Then I had to go back and rekill all the zombies I left behind.
4) Fatal Frame, I actually heard about this game through a friend. Never really saw any advertisements for it.
Scary movies..... The Exorcist, The Ring, and don't laugh but Thirteen ghosts actually freaked me out a little, mainly because the ghosts are so hideous.
Steven King is the greatest. I also used to read those R.L. Stein books when I was younger.
That little girl from the Ring... though not really a villian, she was pretty nasty.

1.) Which system is the "must own" system for horror fans, or at least the most essential.
PS2 and then the GC. X-box really doesn't have anything noticeable in this genre that isn't already on the PS2.
2.) Which upcoming 2004 horror game has your pulse racing the fastest: Resident Evil 4, Silent Hill 4, or something else?
Resident Evil 4 although Silent Hill 4 looks much creepier. I'm curious about the changes Capcom is making in RE4.
3.) Which is the scariest horror game you've played; which is your favorite?
Toss up between Silent Hill 2 and Resident Evil 2.
4.) Most under-rated or relatively over-looked horror title?
Carrier for DC. It was quite atmospheric, all while having a fairly cartoony look which I loved.
5.) Anything else about horror gaming you think needs mentioned?
Yeah, pre rendered backgrounds need to go.
--What is your favorite horror film?
The Shinning.
--What is your favorite horror novel?
Dean R. Koontz's Strange Highways. It's a collection of short stories with two mini novella's. Some are actually really good while others are a bit cliched. Oh and some of the stories have fairly strong christian themes.
--Who (or what) is your favorite horror villain?
Larry King.... he looks like an owl. It's scary!!!!!!

2.) Which upcoming 2004 horror game has your pulse racing the fastest: Resident Evil 4, Silent Hill 4, or something else?
Resident Evil 4 and Outbreak I plan on buying a Game cube soon and RE4 is one of the main reasons why.
3.) Which is the scariest horror game you've played; which is your favorite?
Silent Hill I agree with Enforcer when we played the first game and those damn demon babies kill you it gives you the what the hell is going on feeling. The music alone in SSH is scary it can give you the willies.
4.) Most under-rated or relatively over-looked horror title?
Brittney Spears Dance Beat and the American Idol game. The concept alone scares the Hell out of me
[COLOR=RoyalBlue]My first funny memory from horror gaming . I bought RE2 and was playing it while my wife was sitting in the room and was playing it for a few hours and was getting ready to shut the game off when My wife kept telling me to keep going in the game. She would not let me turn it off ,she just kept telling me hey lets see what happens next. I completed the game in a couple of day's and she forced me to play the game only when she could watch. After that every RE game I play I have to keep a seperate game save just so I can show her what she has missed in the game. What's really funny is that when we got together she refused to watch Horror movies and now she has to rent whatever comes out. -What is your favorite horror film?Attack of the killer Tomatoes, truley a scary film.LOL

The very same. Totally unexpected and totally adrenaline boosting. I have a question about that scene though...
Highlight below...
Was the chick in the bathtub just a halucination of Alex or was she seeing a vision of how her mom died?

The first choice seems more likely, but the second is more interesting.
Also, did anyone else happen to notice that the name "Roivas" is "Savior" spelled backwards?

That's funny because that's what I was thinking through the entire game. Is this really happening or am I just halucinating? What's going on?

The best part of the story line would have to be the Dr. Maximillian Roivas story. When all your servants start trying to kill you, you have to murder all of them. And at the end of the mission you get locked up in an insane assylum for killing them all! Again it just kind of messes with your head. You know?

That's actually my favorite element to Maximillian's storyline. About half way through I thought to myself "Am I the hero or am I just a psychopathic killer?!" It's similar to another character's storyline, whom I can't remember the name of.
The character that is the first one who's storyline takes place in the monestary - around the 14th century if I'm not mistaken? Bad hair-cut? Looks a bit unhealthy by the end of his chapter?

Yeah there's something about those "lost in Hickville" movies. I was driving through Iowa at 4am and I couldn't help but think of Children of the Corn.
There's a guy that Leather Face is based on... he was a real guy and back in the 50s, he killed... not many... 2 or 3 women I think but he skinned them and actually made this human skin body armor thingy he actually wore, complete with breasts and everything. I THINK there's an independent film on it but I've never seen it. But the real life story is just hellishly freaky. If I find his real name I'll post it.

Yeah, that was exactly the scene that made my fiance and I about crap. . . it was so unexpected, becuase there were very few of those "jump out" sort of sudden scares. They tend to be over used in other games, and thus become expected, but up to that point in Eternal Darkness, there was nothing like that, and when went in their and had that hallucination you're referring to (I don't think I'm being specific enough to be giving away a spoiler) we literally just about had a heart attack. Most games don't scare me, really, I enjoy them for the suspense, the creepiness, and the twisted creatures and things, but this was one time I was truly, and completely scared silly, and for that alone I could almost give this my "favorite" horror game award. . . but of course, there is so much more to it.
Some of the other guys raise legit points. The sanity meter could be cool, but it could be gimmicky. It certainly didn't threaten to "ruin" the game, as it wasn't hard to recover lost sanity. What it really did was make battles more intense, because the creatures started to make you lose your mind, and the room would tilt at weird angles and you'd hear this collage of strange insane sounds, babies crying, wailing, and so while trying to stay alive in melee combat with your perceptions warped, it made it very chilling indeed.
Like I've said before, almost all the horror games seem to have one or more major flaws, and the flaws in ED are legit, but there's no way to make a rational argument that ED wasn't a really great game.

the Resident Evil games have always been sorta weak for me, I think because I like more action. That Eternal Darkness wasn't really survival horror, but action horror is also why I think I liked it more. I believe this is why I was so captivated by The Suffering, which is a more deparved, personal story than ED (which was a vast historical drama.) If Suffering comes to PC or you get an xbox, this game looks to be a twisty good action-horror game.

Now that was something else. Great link. Barf!!!
I don't mean to be crass, or to imply I condone that sort of behavior, but when you really look at it, you see the guy was simply an artist (clearly frustrated) practicing with a taboo medium (human flesh.)
Hitler was an artist too, after all, though we'd have all been happier if he'd have stuck to his paintings (but alas, he injected art/spirituality with the politics of "moral clarity" "good and evil" and developed a judgemental antagonism toward the "decadent Weimar art" that was popular at the time.) 10 bonus points to anyone who can find a current American right-wing fundamentalist movement that comdemns decadant art, promotes pre-emptive war, seeks an ideological homogoneous society with strong christian religious ethics, and that ignores scientific data in favor of advancing the agenda of its corporate supporters (these are all factors that existed in Nazi Germany.)
That's my only beef with Return to Castle Wolfenstein. . . the whole Nazi Occult fascination is cool for a game, but the fact is Nazis exploited good old christian moral codes (the jews killed christ) to advance their agenda.
Horror for real. Horror as escapism. Whatever your views on any of my self-indulgent pontificating, thanks Tashi for the great link the Texas Chainsaw Massacre story.
Did you really look at his face? Can you look at him and pretend you have no idea what this man really did, and imagine running into him at the grocery store? What would you think? Really ugly mechanic? Lonley welder? Beggar and barstool sniffer? That's what's so compelling about REAL monsters. Mostly they look like anyone.

Horror is one my fav genres. I could talk about it for days. That's a pretty deep post:eek: But I would expect that from someone that has Philip K. Dick quotes for his signature. I'm not touching the political part though:p.
Psycho, Texas Chainsaw and Silence of the Lambs are 3 of my favorite thriller/horror type movies and it was trippy to read about the guy that inspired all 3. It's also interesting his mom was a dominating religious fanatic, but I said I wasn't touching the political part. But I find the psychological aspect of it engrossing. Personally I prefer supernatural horror but the psychology of real life serial killers is pretty fascinating. When I look at his pic I think Deliverance lol. But I don't think, "hmm... he's digging up dead bodies and wearing the skin." Yuck-O. That's just beyond macabre.
Once long time ago when I still lived at home I rented this unrated horror flick. Can't remember the name but this guy's gf died. So he embalmed her and kept her in his bedroom. But while he was working on her, he took her heart out, and took a bite, like it was an apple or something. Right then, my dad walked in and saw it and said, "that's sick. And you gotta be sick to watch it." Ah well..... :p

I agree. Although I think the only flaw with the sanity meter was that once you learned the proper incantation, recovering sanity was too easy. In fact, I purposely never regained my full sanity when playing the game - just to make things more interesting.
Otherwise, despite this one flaw, it was a very creative element to bring to the game. It may not be perfect, but at least it was different.

I agree. The concept of loosing your sanity was original. So I think the designers had a difficult time incorporating it into the game. If we see an Eternal Darkness sequal, I would like to see the idea improved on.

I thought it was cool and original and I really liked stuff like the bleeding walls and the statue that followed your movement. But as the game worn on it lost its appeal and it wasn't a challenge to keep the meter full. So the challenge in a sequel I think would be how to make it fresh through the whole game and incorporate it where it effects gameplay more.

I think it would be interesting if they had the players foolled into actually playing through the hallucinations rather then just a chessy error message, but I can see that really pissing people off, you know thinking you actually got some where in the game just to find out you're back to where you started!LOL.
But imagine a game where your sole challenge was to decipher between reality and illusion, almost a maze. Incoporate some horror themes and you have yourself an awesome game.

PlayStation's Scariest Games
In the mood for a good scare this Halloween? We rank the games that do it best.
October 30, 1998 - 'Tis the season to be frightened. And while horror movies have long been the perennial favorite form of getting scared, truly nothing can beat the chills delivered by a fully interactive videogame.
If you're looking to turn down the lights, power up your PlayStation, and be scared silly this Halloween, you've come to the right place. Horror-themed games abound for our favorite system, but only a handful are worthy of being called truly horrifying.
Below you'll find our favorite spook-ware, rated in terms of shock value. All will send chills up your spine, but only a couple will have you looking below the bed for boogeymen.
- - - -
Clock Tower
Shock Value: 97%
ASCII's adventure game may not be the best PlayStation may have to offer, but it's by far the scariest. Nothing can beat the first time Scissorman sneaks up on you in a dark room...
Resident Evil: Director's Cut
Shock Value: 92%
The original spook-fest. We actually found Resident Evil much scarier than its sequel, although nothing can beat RE2 in terms of sheer zombie count. Best moment? That first time zombiefied dogs jump through a window at you.
Resident Evil 2
Shock Value: 90%
Like we said, not as scary as its predecessor, but it has an absolutely astronomical zombie count. Plus, it's a better game overall. Hint: if you step in blood, look out above.
Kagero: Deception II
Shock Value: 80%
Tecmo's latest is a total freak-out. Not so much in terms of blood and gore, but it's premise is downright creepy. You're the bad guy (or girl, in this case) and must trap hapless folks who wander into your creepy castle in order to steal their souls. Very Hellraiser-esque.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Shock Value: 70%
Considered by many as the granddaddy of horror-themed adventure series, Castlevania made an absolutely stunning appearance on PlayStation. Lots of ghouls, lots of monsters, and one very bad vampire. Not the scariest game by far, but in terms of style it gets and A+.
Legacy of Kain
Shock Value: 60%
Blood-sucking meets role-playing. You're the vampire (that's Kain) in one of the darkest RPGs we've ever seen. Great voice-acting and creepy sound effects increase the atmosphere, but the effect of sucking your victim's blood is downright horrifying.
- - - -
There are plenty of rightful experiences waiting in the wings as well. Here's a look at some of the more promising horror games scheduled for release in the coming months.
Silent Hill
Konami
You're lost in a quite ? but very creepy ? town, searching for your missing daughter. Entirely polygonal environments mean some of the best (and scariest) cinematic effects see yet in the genre. Coming next March.
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
Crystal Dynamics
Kain goes full 3D early next year. Playing as Raziel, your purpose is to track down and kill Kain from the first game, but you'll have to battle plenty of other dark creatures along the way. Downright gorgeous environments and ultra-creepy monster designs may this one to watch out for.
Clock Tower 2: The Struggle Within
ASCII Entertainment
PlayStation's scariest game is getting a sequel, due to arrive in December. Similar in play to the first, it's premise deals with split personalities and telekinetic powers straight out of the movie Carrie.
- - - -
Not matter which of these games you go with, you're guaranteed a good scare. Just be warned: you'll never be able to play in the dark again. Happy Halloween!

There ARE other games like that. They are called "Almost Every Other Single Bioware RPG That Is Available On Computer".
You can take an evil path in Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate 2, Fallout and Fallout 2. You can also take a neutral path in those games. Plus, you can also be a pacifist, psychopath, and megalomaniac - amongst other personality types - in those games.
I find it so incredibly rich how you Xbots think KotOR is such an innovative, genre defining game, where any PC gamers would know that KotOR is just one of many Bioware RPG's that allows you to contol a party that has branching paths based on alignment and such.

First off know your role.2nd of all nobody is saying that there isnt other games that does this. But KOTOR truly gives you total control of this up to the bitter end.Besides I thought we were talking about console games? Yes we are.So stick to that.Besides KOTOR is the absolute best Star Wars game thats come along in a long time.I dont hear anyone mentioning RS III for the GC anymore these days do you? Nope.
So far it seems to be apparent that everytime an Xbox game gets kick ass reviews here you come crying like a "ewe"Trebor. Why is that? Because there isnt many games so far this year worth talking about on the GC? I think so.KOTOR had an overall rating well over 90.0 plus% Same goes for Ninja Gaiden.
So far not one but two high profile GC games of this year hasnt accomplished this yet.(Final Fantasy:CC & MGS:Twin Snakes)www.gamerankings.com.So you tell me what GC game thus far will be talked about as much as Ninja Gaiden will over the next couple of months? Feel free enlighten us with your logic.
I'm pretty sure that MGS:Snake Eater coming for the PS2 will have better reviews than Twin Snakes did.(A must buy I must say if you own a PS2 like I do)You can count on that.

Maybe if every VGR member puts Evolution on the ignore list, the problem with just fix it self. He'll one day think to himself:
"Maybe my comments have been a tad offence and not well thought out. Maybe there is a system better than my beloved X-box. Personally, i wont put him on the ignore list. Its sometimes interesting looking at a situation at a different angle, even if its Evolution's angle. Maybe its us being the jerks, and him being the saint. Or maybe i should try squeezing in more hours of sleep.

I don't know if you're still on your horror kick, or not, but I recently saw two movies that had some... noteworthy... villians.
First up is.... Oogie Boogie, from Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas.
I think I'm going to have to change my vote for favorite villain, to him. :D
The second is... the brujo from The Missing. Holey moley, what a villain! The thing about him, though, is that there is nothing to like about him - he's too freakin' evil! Keep this bastich away from me. Have you seen this movie - the 2003 film by Ron Howard that takes place in the old west, starring Tommy Lee Jones and Cate Blanchet? A lot of the reviews I've read are more than a little unkind to it, but I liked it. In fact, I watched it back-to-back. Mostly because of the bad guy, Chidin. This witch - this "brujo" - is so nasty he's... riveting. The actor that played him did a bang up job. His performance was of the kind that, if you saw him (the actor) in real life your first reaction would probably be thoughts of enacting some Charles Bronson-type justice on his azz - for what he done in the movie.

The Missing is intense, and the whole witch/mysticism thing made it downright creepy. I think a lot of critics dismissed it cause it's not a typical western. There's not Clint-like character that rides into town, kicks a$$ and rides off into the sunset. There's really nobody to root for... just when you start to like a character, something happens to distance the audience from them. And while it resolves, it's a really uncomfortable resolution. I didn't leave the theatre with a good feeling. But it was a great movie though.

Kinda of a ME-TOO movie but, 28 days later was well done for survival horror. I always find that many 70's horror flicks come across well due to the cheap home video camera work. Watch the Texas Chain Saw Massacre (original) the end looks awful like my neighbor shot it. Which gives it more realism.

Just wanted to hear if anyone had played this yet, and what they thought. I loved the Suffering demo. . . Horror, with more action and lots of Ammo seems like a nice mix to me. This one was finally a game that was disturbing in a truly WRONG way, and I like that.
Unfortunately, this game didn't make the cut in March for me. . . Ninja Gaiden and Harvest Moon won the day. And thank god, too. . . I was so close to getting the Suffering instead of Ninja Gaiden just to not be doing the herd thing. But sometimes the herd is right.
And with all Midway's money problems and this game landing in the same month with Ninja Gaiden and Metal Gear: Twin Snakes, I just figure it will drop in price really quick. Just pragmatism.
One thing though, and I think someone might have insight into this, how is it that at gamerankings.com, every review you click on claims the xbox version is superior to the PS2 version in every way, yet the composite score for the PS2 is a point higher? Is this PS2 bias, or because xbox reviewers have higher standards?

No. . . "Harvest Moon: It's a Wonderful Life" for the Gamecube, coming out on March 17. It's getting reviews in the 75-85 range, sounds like a really cool game despite not being perfect, and I've always meant to get around to trying a game in this series--something about a farm sim just appeals to my warped side, and it seems like the perfect follow up to the blistering action of Ninja Gaiden. I was going to get the N64 version but I heard about it long after it came out (I never heard of this game during the SNES years), and I never could find a copy for less than $50. I've NEVER seen it at a used game store.
It's funny. . . being in the horror thread, that this game is about as un-horror and ultra-cute as it gets. I'll probably be ready for The Suffering after playing it for awhile.
I don't plan on getting the GBA version of Harvest Moon, "Friends of Mineral Town" though I did read it is interactive, you can share items, seed strains, etc between the GBA and GC versions.

Anybody watch Secret Window yet? It's the new film starring Johnny Dep. The movie's predictable but entertaining.
I like both Johnny Depp and Stephen King, so I can't wait to see it. My fiance works all weekend though, and so I have to wait until she has a night free because she's a huge Johnny Depp fan as well.
That makes sense its predictable. . . with almost 40 novels, tons of movies based on them, and a jillion short stories, King territory is pretty well mapped.
And other barely related matters (hey, there ain't much else to talk about around here lately), I just got the Criterion Collection edition of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" with Johnny Depp yesterday. I'm a huge fan of Hunter Thompson's writing, Terry Gilliam's directing, and Johnny Depp's acting, and this is one of my favorite movies. Have you ever looked at any of the Criterion Collection versions of movies? They are kinda pricey ($30 and up), but they have SO MUCH stuff in them. . . In addition to the film, commentaries, deleted scenes, story boards, TV trailers there are documentaries on Hunter S. Thompson, as well as Johnny Depp doing on camera readings of Hunter. S. Thompson's correspondence, and even a 1978 BBC documentary called "Fear and Loathing on the Road to Hollywood."
Criterion Collection DVD's are more like an exhaustive study of the topic at hand, so if they ever do a version of one of your favorite movies, check it out.

It was pretty cool.Too bad they bleeped all of the cursing though. It was like watching Scarface on the family channel.Bleep this and bleep that. But overall it was spooky as hell. You're in jail being stalked by demons. And you have to stay in the light.Thats pretty damn cool.
Plus its almost a tradition that most of the time the Xbox port of a game is better than a PS2 port of one.You know that. Its not always about just better graphics you know.Especially on www.gamerankings.com

No. . . "Harvest Moon: It's a Wonderful Life" for the Gamecube, coming out on March 17.
Wow, I didn't know that. I guess that'll be the 2nd GC game I own.

I actually had no clue that the movie was based on one of Stephen King's works. The opening was somewhat reminiscent of the Shining and I was commenting to my friend about it when suddenly King's name flashes on screen. It was just one of those 'duh' moments.
Unlike Dreamcatcher though, this movie was quite enjoyable. I don't know whether it was Johnny Depp or whether the movie was your typical two hour affair. Most of King's other movies are usually upwards of 3 hours and only a handful have ever managed to keep my attention till the end.
Never heard of Criterion Collection though. I'm not much into movie DVD's. I usually catch whatever I miss on PPV and tape it.

Wow. I never in a million would have noticed that ROIVAS is SAVIOR backwards. Good thing I read back this thread to see if there was anything on Doom, or I never would've found that out!
So, about Doom III. Isn't that game supposed to be creepy/scary? From what I've read about it, it looks like it'll be a nice change of pace from all of the FPS's that are all about being in a warzone. It's actually holding my interest more than Halo 2. Although I will definitely want to get it because part 1 is getting better the more that I play it.
Is Doom 1 and 2 on any of the home consoles?
