Hey what would happen (not to say that it ever will) if sony, nintendo, and microsoft teamed up a little down the road??? Could you imagine the possibilities. Im not saying any system is better than the other but all of them have their pros and cons and every system has a game that makes you wish you want it. Well if this union ever came true it would be heaven for gamers. Internet play would be awesome from microsoft. you could have the creativeness from nintendo. and im sure that sony could still offer a lot.i dunno maybe this is just a stupid idea so what are your thoughts on the matter???

In fairy land, I think this would be wonderful, but here on planet earth it would be hell.
Imagine Sony and M$ (not that Nintendo is perfect, but hear me out). With equal vested interests, and equal returns in the console war. This would be a monopoly that would make gaming hell for most people. Think about how everyone was buying PS2 off Ebay for $1000 when it was released...imagine all three in it together with the ability to charge whatever they wanted for whatever product they wanted. AHHHHHHH!!!! It may very well be the end of the world as we know it.
And since I've been in a musical mode all day:

I'm gonna buy you a used Nintendo
for a thousand bucks
the wavebirds don't work cause they're interferred with so you just lay down
on the couch and think about when you could buy a new one
without selling your car

If I buy a DVD (any DVD!), let's say Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, I can play it on my DVD player. I can play it on your DVD player. I can play it on ANY DVD player.
Yet if I buy Final Fantasy 10, I can't play it on my gaming console (Gamecube). :(
Go figure...

Good point, good point.
The thing is...the movies you want to watch are developed by a third party studio who. if they choose, can make their DVDs play only on certain players. the question is...why would they do that? They would sell less DVDs and therefore, make less money.
Further background on DVDs...I actually personally know the man who invented DVDs. I won't name drop since I don't have his permission to do so, but he was heading up a team of developers for Sharp (or Toshiba, I dont recall which). The technology was developed to store the info on the disc first, then, a hand-built player was developed. So you see, the industry was developed around the media rather than the player. Which is why you can play a DVD on any DVD player, but can only play a gaming disc on a specific console, which is developed prior to the media form factor. And furthermore, this is also the reason that you can play any PC game on any PC (provided your PC has the necessary elements to play that game). You don't need an HP, Sony Vaio, Alienware, etc. to play.
For all you Xboxers out there...check out the afforementioned guy's company website. he has worked closely with M$ to develope some components to help you enjoy your Xbox utilizing the resolution of your PC monitor, or HDTV.

I can sum this up pretty easily...
Competition = good.
One single monopolistic corporate entity that controls the entire videogame industry = bad.

One of the reasons I enjoy Nintendo games so much is because the console is designed specifically for Nintendo games. (The Xbots here can't understand because all they play is multiplatform games). The Gamecube console was designed for Zelda: Wind Waker, Super Mario Sunshine and Metroid Prime. Other Gamecube fans will agree with me. And reviewers will agree with me as well. Just check out gamerankings.com. Those 3 games scored better than any of their competitors. This is not a coincidence.
So what I'm trying to say is that Nintendo games wouldn't hold as much weight (with me) if they were generically designed for a console.

Is the thought of EA making a console with all there games exlusive to just that one system. No other console in the states will be able to survive and if the Japanese developers wanted to sell anything in NA they would have to support it.

Possibilities of joined super powers?
What possibilies?!
Needless the say, its already been pointed out that the prices would sky rocket.
If they had the SAME system, when will the next one come out? 5 years? 8 years? What motivation would Nin,Mic, and Sony have to create another console? Think about it, they will try to squeeze every single last possible cent from the consumer b4 they even THINK about making another console.

U know how Nintendo is praised for their exclusive games? Well, how many games do u think they'll be making after the merger? Not as much as they are now, thats for sure because there is no motivation.
U make it sound like if all the companys join forces, suddenly they're create something so extraordinary and revolutionary. I doubt it. Your La-La land is scary.

your still missing the point im not talkin about puttin the box, ps2, and gc together im talkin about a brand new system. and whats wrong with waitin 5 years??? its not that long really. How long has the xbox, and gc been out??? about 3 years and they still dont have that many games. and besides the consumer makes up the mind for the company. if somethings not sellin then they move on so if you say they dont have any motivation to make a new system then we must think they did a pretty good job or else their stupid and want to go bankrupt. but now your gettin me on prices thats not what im trying to talk about im just tryin to say that they could have some great games if they put their heads together. its no lala land of mine. if you can tell me youve never once thought of combining 2 or more games then maybe your livin in your own

I think u are missing my point.
I never said or intended that the gc,x-box and ps2 were to be combined
Nothings wrong with 5 years what i meant to say is 8 or 10 years but still, my original point stands."What motivation would Nin,Mic, and Sony have to create another console? Think about it, they will try to squeeze every single last possible cent from the consumer b4 they even THINK about making another console. "
Heres a really good example of a system that was out in the market, well seemed like forever.
Gameboy, i think it came out in 1988 and "died" around 97 or 98. Thats close to 10 years! That long us consumers had to 'settle' with that DOT matrix technology.
if somethings not sellin then they move on so if you say they dont have any motivation to make a new system
You see, thats exactly what i m trying to tell u. Thats there ONLY motivation, what else is there? Nothing. It'll be a long time b4 people stop buying that one and only console (much longer than 5 years). I think Nintendo 64 came out in 96 and stopped in 2001. Thats about 5 years, WITH COMPETION. Imagine without competion.
now your gettin me on prices thats not what im trying to talk about
I'm getting u into prices?! I only mentioned prices once. Very breifly i might add, cuz well everyone else did a great job emphazing it.
they could have some great games if they put their heads together.
What makes u think All three companies will 'put their heads together' when they are creating games? I doubt they ever will. I dont think either will agree with one another. ITs like taking all your favourite pop soda drinks and mixing them together - Yuck.
if you can tell me youve never once thought of combining 2 or more games then maybe your livin in your own
Games?
Sure, Metal Gear Solid combined with the VR missions.
All the RE games into one CD pack
All the Silent Hill games in one CD pack.
etc. etc.
I dont get why u even mentioned that statement.
Combining two or more games?
If u wanna combine games, try one of those arcade packs where they have 50 arcade titles in one cd.

you know thats not what i meant when i said that. and if you didnt ill clear it up for you. i meant that combining two or more games like you add elements of one game with elements of another. like what game evolution had for an idea he said somethin about combining mario, link, and sonic in a game(and it didnt sound like to bad of a game) where peach and zelda make an alliance and robotnik screws it up and well you get where im goin with this??? just different styles roled into one.

. i meant that combining two or more games like you add elements of one game with elements of another.
Mixing elements from different games?
Well, u dont need to combine companies in order to achieve that, infact video game developers have been doing that for years.
Rogue Ops: Imagine Splinter Cell mixed in with Metal Gear Solid
'BOKTAI: The Sun is in Your Hand:The actual gameplay is something of a mix of Metal Gear Solid and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, with a hint of some dungeon crawler.
SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs : mix of Metal Gear Solid and Ghost Recon although the AI is kinda lame (according to my friend)
Conker's Bad Fur Day: In terms of camera angles, a mix of Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time: players can rotate the camera around Conker for a full 360 degrees
Mr. Nutz: mix of Sonic and Zelda. (According to my friend)
like what game evolution had for an idea he said somethin about combining mario, link, and sonic in a game(and it didnt sound like to bad of a game) where peach and zelda make an alliance and robotnik screws it up and well you get where im goin with this??? just different styles roled into one.
Wait, your not mixing elements, your just adding a bunch of different characters to one game. Genius! (sarcasm) Plus that idea with Mario, Sonic and Link sounds kinda errie. I think its one of those ideas that sound good on paper, but when one actually gets down and making the damn thing it wont be very practical, but thats my opinion.
the consumer is happy with the product. the consumer controls the videogame business and if the consumer doesnt buy the product they have to move on or they're bankrupt
Now what u said is true, to a degree. Do u remember Dreamcast? A lot of people loved that console to death. I think it made a world record on its release date on of having the most preordered consoles or something, not sure, but it made a world recond on something when it did release. Anyway, a lot of people felt very positive about this system. Yet it still died. Infact, there are still groups out there are determined in resurrecting the system somehow. Dont ask me why, there all nuts. But the point is, this system was loved by many, although the controls were that great(yet i didnt mind) the graphics were far superior than what was offered from N64 and Playstation. The point is: consumers do not have complete 100% control over the life of a console.
The whole point of my argument is that the videogame industry needs competition. For the console makers there will be only one motivation about consumers getting really really pist about a product, perfect example: GBA, it needed a light to actually see the damn thing, so due to large large large demand (trust me, the demand had to be huge before Nintendo even considered anything the consumer siad), Nintendo had no choice but to come out with a GBA-SP.
But consumer getting really really pist is there only motivation to strive harder and harder. There would be no other game console making company to motivate the nin, sony, mic company to strive above boundaries. Example: When Nintendo and Sony were competing and sega was in the dark for a period of time. Sega wanted to make a system that was far extraordinary and revolutionary compared to its current competition, so they introduced Dreamcast with the first console to have a modem built in. They all came out with a standalone VMU that can play games like a Gameboy. Now u cant argue with me saying they would of done that anyway wheather Nintendo and Sony existed or not.
There arent much possibilies in the merger, Nintendo WONT BE MAKING as many Games as they are not - admit it. Less games would be released a year than compared to now. And personally i think no matter how bad mic, sony, nin screw up on their one console, there will always be a HUGE HUGE crowd of people who just wont game on their PC. So there will always be a huge market targeted to that one and only console.
[B]It would be a bleak time for console gamers if Nin,Sony,Mic merged. End of story.[B]

yeah i see what your sayin but still i can see some pros in it but im not gonna tell you or you might run them down to... lol. so you cant see anything positive if they all came together???? and plus in relation to not so many games comin out in a year is that really so bad??? there are tons of games that come out in a year now and im still tryin to catch up with the ones from 2002

I understand your reasoning for imagining the companies merging. We live in a time where 3 console makers are constantly competeing. Each console has their exculsive gems that well every gamer would love to have. Its gets to be stressful to buy another console just to play that one ultra-cool game. So imagining nin, sony, mic joining would seem to appear less stressful, but in the end, its the consumer that has lost.
Like everything else, there are always postives and negatives:
POSITIVE
-Hmm... i suppose little jimmy being able to buy one console and not be hammered by some other console owner cuz everyone will have the same console!
-feel free to state your positives, i really i got none.
NEGATIVE
-no more system wars. farewell....weep.
-With no real choice, why not hop on the corporate conveyer belt to wage slavery and a faceless future in a sea of exploited mediocre white-class workers (I suppose I'm being melodramatic)
-and all the other points i stated earlier.
Overall, i like this thread it got me all worked up. lol

I think I have the answer to your what-if... If the three were to team up (but they wont, there's not enough profit there for them to team up) and make a console... You'd end up with a PC.
