That's kinda funny. Despite having fewer total number of titles on the GC, and the GC having about 1million smaller user base in the US, GC sold 3,303,190 copies of Sega software and Xbox only sold 2,236,838. That's over a million more copies of sega software sold on GC.
And some of the best of what Sega put out went to the xbox like Panzer Dragoon, Otogi, and Toe Jam and Earl. Just goes to show, don't cast pearls before swine :)

It's not surprising that a lot of Sonic games sold well on GC. Gamecube is the home console for mascot games.
As far as Sega games not selling well on Xbox, so what? Toe Jam & Earl sucked, Panzer Dragoon had limited gameplay, and Otogi was just decent at best.

I really like PDO despite the limited gameplay, but in general you are right. For me Sega is home of great sports franchises and that is all.

What about Monkey Ball? That game was freaking brilliant, even raved about by adult gaming journalists despite its overt "cuteness.". I bet it would have sold like crap on xbox because of how it "looked." Addictive, challenging difficulty level, diverse, high replay value, and extremely original---crave not these things, says the xbot. Instead, buy for the second time that port of GTA/Vice City that you already bought once before for your PS2!!!
Check out that doofus down in the Xbox forum who's going to buy Tenchu for the second time for a few xtra xbox features. That's the xbox game buying demographic in a nutshell.

Too true, they crave PS2 throwbacks from the year before while we get sequels to those games. :D
One thing though, Sega should make a lot more of these titles multiplatform. Especially Virtua Fighter 4, PDO and Skies of Arcadia. If those titles were multiplat, they would have undoubtedly sold a lot more then they did. IMO, Sega's decision to put exclusives on each console is not a theory that has worked well for them. They need to diversify and they need to begin with their more established franchises while they can still rely on them.

I'm sad to see those low sales for Skies of Arcadia Ledgends and Beach Spikers Vollyball. Those are 2 great games that are really underated.

I think Beach Spikers would have done well on PS2 and X-box. They needed to multiplat that game also.

Agreed.
Sega, as a company, must be retarded or something.
I just don't understand how you can pass up a putting a version out for a console that's got over 60 million users!?! That's just... baaad business.
One other thing... though I'm probably just pointing out the obvious here... I think Sega is just as responsible as Nintendo is, for creating the GameCube's "kiddie" image. Why, just look at the games that they choose to put out for it, and then for the others!

Whew, that was one long @$$ game. The longest I've played in a years. This game is definately underrated. It sold just as poorly on the Dreamcast as well. That's a shame.

What about Monkey Ball? You just proved his point---another game with a mascot on the cover---the typical GC demographic. It does not really matter how good the game was because the GC demographic will just eat it up because of the way it "looked". I just love these blanket statements. Come on Gadfly you know that somehow and someway it would have done the GC some good to get GTA in its library, and if you don't say so then you are lying. I must say that I even rebought GTA3($25 used) for two reasons only. First, because I traded it in for GTA4 originally, and after playing through Vice City, I really thought that GTA3 was the better game that should have remained in my collection. Secondly, and more importantly, for the custom soundtrack option. I really like to mix my own stuff in with the other great selections.

Monkey Ball a mascot game? In which world? And how do you explain Billy Hatcher then?
You know, I really don't think GTA would have done well on the GC. Oh sure, people would have bought it but I bet it would have disappeared off the lists faster then with the other two consoles.

The upcoming Virtua Fighter Cyber Generations is the same way. I thought we were going to be getting a Virtua Fighter RPG, instead we get a game with some thirteen year old on a final fight type quest. Oh well, will still give it a try.

That would be in this world. It has a cute monkey on the cover similar to that other cute monkey in all the Nintendo franchises. You and I know that the monkey in the game is not an actual mascot, but he sure "looks" like one. As far as Billy Hatcher goes I don't really have an explanation except that maybe people did not buy it because the Nintendo library is already flooded with these type of games.

Dude---GTA has always done well on any platform, so I have no reason to believe that it would not do well on GC. As far as pulling a disappearing act on GC you could be right because that does seem to happen to a lot of great titles on GC for some reason(except SSBM of course).

Interesting you bring up SSBM. It's not a Sega game but since you guys have gone off the subject... I would suspect that this game has sold better than any other game on the GCN. There has not been one month that SSBM is not in the top 10 sales charts (usually in the top 5).

I would bet that you are right. In another thread someone was talking about how great the Mario Kart series is because of the multiplayer. For my money SSBM is a better multiplayer game than Mario Kart. In fact---SSBM is still my favorite GC game. That game is the only GC game that I still play.

I think that comes down to:
Super Smash Bros. Melee = 4 player action on screen
Mario Kart Double Dash = 4 player action on split screen
Split screen sucks (you already know this). However GCN/Mario Kart + broadband adapter + TV + GCN/Mario Kart + broadband adapter + TV = no split screen!

Yeah, seriously man, where do you get off calling Monkey Ball a "mascot" game? For what system? I mean, at least Billy Hatcher was a mascot "style game" you know, at least Billy Hatcher was a personality with a name, which is a requisite to be a mascot. A bunch of essentially generic monkeys on the cover does not make a "mascot" game.
If GC fans ate up "mascots" they'd have jumped on Hatcher, but they bought Monkey Ball by the hundreds of thousands, which means it was more than just kids. I'm an adult. I bought it. I know college kids who love this thing as a party game, and I'm sure it makes a fine drinking game. Monkey Ball, rocked, period. No GC fan bought it because of "how it looked." But I can guarantee you it would have sold like cow-flop on xbox because of "how it looked."
I hope for your sake paying for and playing GTA AGAIN was worth, you know, to be able to play the same game with different songs. Clearly custom soundtrack xbox is the better version to buy if you haven't got the game already, but I'm sorry, I'm not buying a game just to be able to listen to tunes I could just put in my cd player.

All that I will say about this is that you are over estimating the typical GC owner. For you to imply that Xbox owners will buy something because of the way it "looks" and GC owners are somehow far more sophisticated and will not buy into that is just a farce. I have news for you Gadfly---you and your college friends are not typical GC owners.

Well let's see. Originally I spent $50 on GTA3. When I traded it for GTA4 they gave me $20 for it then I rebought it for Xbox for $25 used, so I spent $5 to upgrade to custom soundtracks. That is a good enough deal for me. That was not even my point, though. The point was that GTA is an asset to any game library, so it is a shame for GC-only owners that they can't have it.

I guess I never think about it that way. . . I don't think all three systems need to have the same kind of library, but I guess a GC only owner with no PC couldn't play GTA. It's a good game, in some ways a great game, and all adult gamers should at least experience it. But its just one game. Someone just curious to see what all the controversy is about could rent an xbox and try it out.
I'm wondering if its even technically possible to put GTA on GC. You couldn't do this game split on two discs, and though most games don't take up more than the 1.5 GB the GC disc has, this game probably does, just because of the humongous amount of songs and all the radio stations and the tons of cut scenes. You couldn't trim any of that out and still have the same game. And that's why I'm not keen on custom soundtracks for this game (especially Vice City)--there's so much music it'd be hard to get repetitious in the time it takes to complete the game, and the music and talk radio stations are totally essential to setting the atmosphere of being in 1980's Miami. How weird would it be to drive around Vice City listening to Britney Spears and Creed?
I guess you could always put together an 80's college underground station that plays "They Might Be Giants," "Husker Du" "Butthole Surfers" "The Cure" "Joy Division" "Depeche Mode" and "Skinny Puppy" like I did, so it would feel more like the 80's I enjoyed, and anyway, Skinny Puppy is great for doing drive-by shootings of gang members, but not nearly as funny or ironic as listening to the religious talk radio station that comes standard in Vice City.
God, what a rambling, crap post. I'm gonna hit "submit" anyway.

You know---you are probably right about the fact that they might not even be able to pull off GTA on GC. That might be one of the few that would not be possible.
Here is why I like the custome soundtrack option in the game---because it only makes your soundtrack one of the stations. You can have your music or their music, so the integrity is not ruined.

Of course we know both you and Gadfly are 100% incorrect, as pointed out time and again. PS2 ports suffer horribly on XBOX. Even the mighty MGS was in the bargain bin after a matter of months. Silent Hill2, Onimusha, all sold like crap. Sure there maybe some people who buy Tenchu, but just like Dynasty Warriors and CloneWars, and Spyhunter, it won't push major units. Especially with Ninja Gaiden out at the same time. As far as Monkey Balls, Gadfly must be dreaming, nobody on the XBOX bought MS's cute furry little platform, puzzle, and cartoon kiddie games, what makes him think anyone would support or even want to play Monkey Balls on XBOX. Especially given Sega's horrendous performance on XBOX. In my opinion, Sega has only done two decent games on XBOX, aside from their sports stuff, Gunvalkyrie and JSRF. Even those barely moved any units. Sega needs some help.
