I can't even believe that 338,000 PS2's were sold in January. The N. American market must be smoking crack on a grand scale, but hey, what do I know? There is no accounting for taste.
I suppose since the PS2 has a nasty habit of breaking, a good portion of sales every month has to be from people replacing their broken units. Ha ha, I said "units".
Here is a question to all the PS2 owners on System Wars...
How many of you have had to buy replacement PS2's because your first stopped working properly?

How about zero replacements ever since I bought my PS2 from the first day it launched on November 2000. Thats 3 years plus of continuous use 4 to 5 days a week and at least 3 to 4 hours a day between me and my kids. The darn thing is still working as well as the day I took it out of the box. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

Two PS2s, they are still going on and on and on and on and on and on...without any problems.
Most of my friends' ps2 do not have any problem with theirs too. I am sure there are victims out there. But comparing to 80 million PS2 sold, they really are minority. That can hardly be counted against PS2&Sony

The way its supposed to be:
1.PS2
2.Xbox
3.GC
And to answer Trebor's question.I bought a new PS2 console a little over a month ago when my old PS2 wouldnt play any new games at all.Other than that this one has been working like a charm.

I haven't had to. My first one is still going strong. My GC on the other hand has given me a handful of error messages and I had to return the first unit I bought because it was defective. I'm never buying a console at a mainstream chain again.
I agree with Folken that considering how many PS2's are in circulation out there, there are bound to be more defects on Sony's side then on MS and Nintendo's.
Edit: Commenting on the figures, it looks like GC has fallen behind once again. It'll be interesting to see February's data when Twin Snakes is released. BTW, anybody want the software figures?

I've never had any problems with my PS2 I've had for about two years now. It plays all the games and any DVD I put in it without problems. No one I know has had any problems either. That argument is getting about as stale as the one about the lack of genres for GC.

I have a launch PS2 and I have not had to buy a replacement. However, as a DVD player the damn thing is impotent. It is to the point where it will hardly play any DVD's without issue.

I'm on my second PS2. My first one lasted a little over a year. It stopped reading discs and the drawer wouldn't open. I took out the EB Games two year "replacement" warranty on the second one which so far has given me no problems.

Funny how that works huh? You take out the warranty and not a problem, you don't, and it breaks down on you.

Do you rent alot of movies or games? Plus do you clean your PS2 on a weekly basis?
I dont rent any DVD movies or rent any games for my PS2 or my Xbox. The less you rent the longer your consoles lifespan should be.I had to replace my PS2 because I had one of the buggy ones from 2001.The one I have now plays like a charm. It even plays most of my bootleg DVD's.(At least the XXX ones anyway)

I rent some games and movies, but not a lot lately. I always clean them with one of those soft cloths before I put them in the PS2. And for movies, I always try to get them when they first come out, so I don't have to fool with scratches from others who do not kno how to take care of a disk.
If not weekly, then I try to clean my systems every 2 weeks. I usually use some of that "air in a can" to try and clean the lens, since I heard that a cd cleaner may scratch the lens. I also keep the air vents clean with a small keyboard vacuum.
Surprisingly, the PS2 dvd player played a rented version of Bruce Almighty (wasn't very funny) yet it wouldn't play a brand new, store bought copy of Monster's Ball. Go Figure.

Well, so far that is 2 people out of 9 who have had to replace their PS2's, and quite a few more who complain about DVD playback. That isn't really the best ratio so far, but I'm not too surprised.
It isn't anything against Sony as a videogame company more than it is about Sony as a manufacturer. I just think Sony products as a whole tend to break quickly - my buddy had a 32" HDTV Sony Wega that went bad in less than a year.

I'd like to take this opportunity to point out to any EA employee's lurking on the board that 4 out of the top 10 selling games were from EA. So perhaps you might not sell as many as on the PS2, but you still are outselling most of the competition.

Good point trebor. And sometimes (not often) the GCN version of a multiplatform game will outsell the the PC, PS2 and Xbox. 007 and Lord of the Rings games always sell well on the GCN.

Good for Xbots, bad for Nintendo brownies:
Xbox Fattens in January
NPD says MS gets big ups from consumers as the New Year begins.
February 19, 2004 - Remember when GameCube surpassed Xbox in console sales? That was prompted by the GameCube's price slash and if January is any indication, that purchase fervor may be winding down. According to NPD, Xbox narrowly outsold Nintendo's GameCube 192,000 console units to 131,000. PS2 sold at a much higher clip, with 338,000 consoles. As far as systems go, however, Nintendo may be laughing loudest thanks to the GBA, which trumped Xbox with nearly 300,000 units sold in the first month of the year. But don't worry fellow Xbox lovers, Microsoft is seeing some positive growth numbers in a month that usually sees declining sales.
In January, thanks to the slowed sales of Cube and PS2, Xbox netted its highest US console share since launch at 29% (19% if you consider GBA sales), while increasing overall console sales by 16%. More importantly, Xbox software sales increased 80% over the same time last year when just five titles shipped.
Two Xbox titles, NFL Street and GTA Double-Pack, managed to crack NPD's top ten in software sales, though PS2 remained the dominant force with multi-platform games. The PS2 version of NFL Street more than doubled the sales of the Xbox version and Need for Speed Underground's PS2 incarnation nearly tripled sales over its Xbox counterpart. It's not clear whether online makes that big of a difference to gamers or if it's just the fact that there are far more PS2 owners in the marketplace.
On a worldwide scale, Xbox is doing well in countries where English is the primary language, but sales in Japan remain so abysmal Microsoft rarely mentions the Land of the Rising Sun in their press releases. Ah, but the good news is that Canucks love the Xbox and it shared a near equal percentage of the January console market with PS2 (40.2% to 42.9%). Moose love the Xbox! Aussies do as well as Xbox held a similar split of the January market in the land down under.
Xbox still has its biggest guns coming in March with games like Ninja Gaiden and Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, but February could see a minor slip in software sales thanks to big hitters Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles for GameCube and Champions of Norrath for PS2.
So what do all these numbers really mean? Microsoft hopes it means Xbox is making some strides in chipping away at PS2. But, as we love to say in the office, "Less people are buying PS2's because everybody already has one." In any case, the future looks brightest for gamers, who will continue to enjoy price drops and quality games on all three consoles.

Here is a question to all the PS2 owners on System Wars...
How many of you have had to buy replacement PS2's because your first stopped working properly?[/QUOTE]
I have owned the PS2 for over 2 years and have not had to replace it. I purchased the replacement warranty and did not have to use it which I can deal with. I rent dvds all the time and I never really have an issue with them not playing. If they don't I just shoot some air into it and poof its fixed. I rent hundreds of movies a year and run the piss out of my system so I can't complain with the performance of the PS2. I do have one question of the people that there PS2's broke down did you try and get them repaired or did you go out and waste another 200 or more dollars to get a new one. it seems like it would be smarter to repair the system for acouple of bucks than have to replace it. In the new modern world with replacement warranty's and local game shops that can fix your system it seems like you would be a fool to go out and buy a new system and thats something you can't debate.
