The king of stealth has arrived! Now let's just hope it retains all of the glory from part one and transfers it faithfully to us poor consolers.

Now that RS3 has shown that it is possible to use a corner peeking system on a console, I'm betting we'll see it copied in many FPS games to come and Thief wouldn't be the same without it. I'm not really that thrilled about the addition of 3rd person mode though. Even if it is "in addition" to the original 1st person view, it detracts from the intensity because you can see all around you ah la SC.

The addition of interactive lighting will be great too. Now instead of just shooting torches with water arrows, do you suppose we can create a second light source that can cast new shadows to over say, an open space? That would be interesting. And gaurds with torches that can find you in the corner instead of wandering about in the dark.

From what I've heard you can position objects and aim lightsources to cast shadows where you need them, and probably even sneak around behind a patrolling guard while in walking in his shadow.

From what I've read over the various preview, they're keeping the game as deep as the original 2 games but giving you more options and variety due to a few new gadgets you can play with. The only thing that's been removed are the rope arrows, but they've been replaced with the ability to scale certain walls so it's a pretty even tradeoff. I still thought the rope arrows were neater, though.

And of course the Keeper Assasians are cool as hell. Enemies that can go invisible in shadows like you can and stalk you in groups...really damn cool.

HA, I remember playing theif, going up to guys, pegging them off with arrow after arrow, diceing them like a pizza, drowning in the septic system, its all good, although the video did not intrigue as much a I would have liked.

lol, guess you were playing newbie easy mode, Niss. ;)

If you kill guys left and right in the later levels it actually makes the game much harder. Those guards hear you kill their friends and it makes them suspicious...when they see the blood left behind it makes em even more worried. Best just to blackjack their asses and hide em in a dark closet somewhere.

5/17/04? Is this right, it's from EBgames.com.

What's so great about Thief? I've heard good things about the first two, but never played either of them. I got hooked on Splinter Cell. Think I'll like this?

Both games indeed are must haves.

Basically Thief is a far more open, a bit slower, and far more tense and creepy version of Splinter Cell. SC actually ganked alot of stuff from the Thief series and used it in its own way, sorta modernized it and tried to make it more realistic...

The biggest advantage Thief has is the amount of stuff you can do per mission, whereas in SC you only had one way to complete an objective along with linear maps Thief has multiple entrance and exit points along with multiple ways to do everything...and MUCH larger maps.

This is a good example of a single level in Thief 2...

As you can see theres alot to do in each mission..and it never gets boring cuz you're always scared of what's around the corner. Also, unlike SC, Thief doesn't end the game when you get spotted..it just makes the game far more difficult.

Thief is one of those series where you look at the games and wonder why it took them so long to figure it out. What an FPS game that doesn't involve just shooting everything that moves? What a novel idea! SC is pretty much just a beefed up version of Thief that they added in interactive lighting and focused more on killing rather then sneaking. The CIA level from SC gives you a very good idea of how the better levels in Thief played, except that you had a list of goals to start with, dropped you outside and you went in and tried to figure out how to get whatever you were after. Almost total freedom, unlike the linear nature of SC's levels and without the little voice in your ear telling you what to do.
Of course they threw in a couple levels in the first one where you fight zobies because they weren't sure how people would take the straight stealth stuff, but we know how that turned out.
Oh and Thief actually has a plot line that has something to do with the character which is a nice bonus.

If you like SC, deffinitely pick this game up and see where Ubisoft got all their ideas. And if your PC can run them, pick up the first two if you can find them.

Thief 3 looks pretty cool. Perhaps I'll pick it up later this year. I'm going with Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes first. Splinter Cell doesn't do it for me.

Here's a nice little article about Thief and a few other old bargin bin games HERE (http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/fun.games/02/16/garbain.bin/index.html)

You can pick both Thief 1 & 2 up for less than $20 nowadays and you don't need a supercharged computer to run em. The graphics might be more than a little dated, but the gameplay and atmosphere are still untouched. They're definately worth the money, considering all the countless fanmissions out there the game has nearly infinite replayability.

With the addition of a 3rd person view, I may have to keep an eye out for this title. Hopefully, Thief 3 will be able to stand out from the other stealthy games coming out this year.

I'm a little more than just somewhat interested in Thief now. That website is pretty cool too. I'll definitely be giving it a try when it comes out. Thanks for the replies.
