It's funny, no one around here is talking about Champions of Norrath. My guess is half the PS2 users around are so stuck on old capcom and namco franchises they probably aren't even interested in this game. I don't know much about it myself, but after reading a few previews I can say it sounds like a great game, let's see how well it is executed online. But a 4 player co-op dungeon romp sounds great, over 70 hours of game play, 10,000 items to be found, massive battles. Though not nearly enough to make me want to buy a PS2, and not anything PC users need be jealous of, it is good this type of game is showing up online for Sony. No Japanese anime, no turn-based battles, not dominated by FMV, four player co-op(with multitap or online with broadband). The battle system is a little bit too hack and slash for me, but that's cool, if the game succeeds it means there will be a rash of copy cats and people wanting to do more american based online rpgs.

The game definitely has graphical problems, but we are talking about the PS2 so what can you expect. As good as KOTOR is, Morrowind was, FABLE and Sudeki look, none of them are online. The only one is PSO, MS upcoming TrueFantasyLive will probably be much bigger than PSO, but agast, it features Japanese anime, and I'm not sure but it maybe turn based.

I don't know why developers can't see the formula for success, take the PC version of Baldur's Gate, Ice Wind Dale, true dungeons and dragons rules, multiplayer rpgs, complex combat rules implemented, put it on a console, make it massively multiplayer online. What Champions represents is basically a console version of Diablo, albeit almost 10 years after Diablo was released. How long will it take before consoles get a true true MMORPG dungeons and dragon's rule based AMERICAN rpg?

And this is the reason why it will fail.

Not flashy enough to suit the needs of the brainwashed PS2 heads.

I can see the kiddies now..."dude, you heard of CoN?"
"ya dude, it's lame"
"why dude?"
"ya know man, it doesn't have that AWESOME big googly eyed anime characters ..."
"but..."
"there's no flashy turn based magic spells..."
"but..."
"but worst of all, there's just no cg, and those make it lame"
"but those aren't really GAMEPLAY elements"
"since when has GAMEPLAY ever mattered on PS2?"
"oh yea, it hasn't"

I really think we will see a game like BG2 on a console when the consoles have more memory and even larger hard drives.

True Fantasy Live will probably have realtime stat based battles...it'd be almost impossible to do turn-based battles in a massively multiplayer game.

You can't do turn based at all I would think. Everything has to be real-time. Wouldn't the game be ridiculous if it weren't real-time? You can't pause the game for every separate battle and you sure can't resort to magically appearing foes so others can keep playing while you fight it out.

It COULD be done..it'd just look weird. Like you'd be walking through some gigantic forest and suddenly you come across a group of people surrounded by monsters that are just standing around staring at each other and only one person would occasionally move.

You wouldn't be able to pause the game manually, but doing actual turn based movement could work.

Okay, then I may get the game just on the strength of the possible online community, hundreds of players, but the cell-shading and animation are not inspiring, to me at any rate.

I have it, some friends it, and we're there.

You don't know that much about it, but you're comparing it with Diablo?

There's no monthy fee, btw.

You could a turnbased realtime hybrid. In fact, Everquest though real time, has a very turn based feel to it. But yeah pausing would be impossible. Like PSO and CoN, your buds have to keep enemies off you if you need to go to a menu.
