Hey wtf is all the hype for the next Syphon Filter?

I mean to me, the Syphon Filter series was one of the best bunch of non-sim TPSs ever made and were very popular with me and many of my friends.

I enjoyed Sypon Filter alot more than I enjoyed Metal Gear Solid and I suspect many others did to.

So why all this hype for MGS3 and no hype for the next Syphon Filter?

Seriously.....

Hear is a clip from Gamespot about the game:
We haven't heard from Gabe Logan, the star of Sony's popular Syphon Filter series, in quite some time. But Gabe and his Agency are back, and this time the mission is a cooperative four-player adventure.

The game is set against a backdrop rife with bioterrorism. The deadly syphon filter virus is spreading faster and faster, and outbreaks are occurring all over the world. Gabe learns that a multinational corporation has been behind the spread of the virus from the very beginning, and he sets out to stop a new killer strain of the virus from destroying humankind.

Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain features 17 missions. Each one of these levels is said to be three times as large as some of the levels seen in previous Syphon Filter games, and the levels are designed with multiple paths and nonlinearity in mind. The game can be played alone, but it's clearly being designed for online play. The online play comes in the form of a four-player cooperative mode. With multiple players, you'll be able to access more portions of the game's levels. Teamwork is key, and you'll be able to speak to other players using a USB headset.

You'll have more than 100 different weapons and gadgets at your disposal, but you'll only be able to carry four guns at once, making your choice of weapons more important. The game will allow you to target an enemy's various body parts, giving you the option to, say, eliminate armored guards with a head shot, just like in previous entries in the series.

Your online character can be customized in a handful of different ways, and you'll gain access to more and more outfits and weapons as you play.

Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain is currently scheduled to ship in winter 2004.

I hope the four player co-op is playable offline too or at least some kind of offline co-op will be available. Many user do not have access to broadband yet and it would seem a shame if they were to miss parts of the game not accesible to them because of that reason alone. Plus having an offline co-op mode will make the games features even stronger.

And did you catch this?

".....and the levels are designed with multiple paths and nonlinearity in mind."

It's not totally player character driven gameplay, but it's a start! ;)

I should go check old sales charts... I thought Syphon Filter was a "hit" back in the days.

Maybe I am wrong.....but if it was as big of a hit as I suspect than a new installment in the series should get SOME hype.

I too enjoyed the Syphon Filters of old. Especially part two(never did play part 3). These games had it all. The serious story, lots of sneaking and lots o' action The games were nice and difficult, the game's tempo was a lot faster and the stages were also long. It's a shame that these games never reached the popularity like stealth games of today. Too bad they're forcing multiplayer aspects. It would be cool to do it all with one or four.

How is part 3, btw?

I agree. I think that reason alone is why I haven't paid anymore attention to the game.

I think MGS3 gets a lot more hype than Syphon Filter because of the developers. Almost anything Hideo Kojima and his team develops will get a lot of attention, and they deserve it. Ever since MGS1, I can't think of any game he did that wasn't good overall.

Still trying to find more info on this game.. will post anything "new" I hear.

I just can't believe this game has "flown" so far under the radar.

Syphon Filter was a great game and I still refuse to play many third person games that cannot measure up to the sheer "ease" and "accessibility" of the control scheme of Syphon Filter.

I got to the point where I could control my character to the extent he appeared as if he was fluid in every movment. Watching me play was close to watching a movie or a cartoon. The gameplay became that smooth. It was awesome.

I have yet to find a next-gen game that can deliver that same experience.

Many if not most of today's third person games while giving more "control" to the player feel very "awkward" and character control does not come "naturally".

SOCOM is like this for me.. it is an awesome looking game that I currently own and want to play very badly but I just can't "make" myself do it. After about an hour of playing and trying to familiarize myself with the char controls I am just "burnt" out and can no longer play.

The same thing happens with many FPS... Unreal Tournament was like that where the controls were just very awkward and unnatural.

If I wanted to invest that much time into "teaching" my fingers to manipulate something I would pick up the guitar or something.

Anyways... Syphon Filter was a "hit" and the new game sounds good. It deserves some hype.

I didn't get a chance to play the third one either... after playing the first two games it looked like the third was just another installment of the first two with the same exact gameplay. I passed on that one.

Sorry I couldn't tell you how good it was.

Meagher:

It has had some hype. It's just been overshadowed by the big holiday releases...

This month's Official Playstation Magazine not only features Syphon Filter on the cover, it also contains a playable demo of the game! If this doesn't satisfy your curiosity, I don't know what will...

Get it NOW!!!!!! :D
