"PC games console takes on rivals"

The PlayStation 2 has a new rival in the shape of a console that can play hundreds more games than any other on the market.
The upstart is a machine designed to let people play computer games on a TV set in the living room.
The Discover PC game console is the brainchild of a California-based company called Digital Interactive Systems Corporation (Disc). Its software allows a gamer to simply drop a disc into the machine, which then automatically recognises, installs and plays the game. "The user has the same experience as if they are playing on a PlayStation or Xbox, where it is a very simple consumer electronics product rather than a PC," said Curtis Kaiser, a Disc spokesman. Windows XP machine The first console based on the technology developed by the company had its debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this month.........

It's doomed to fail. At $400 it's too expensive for a console, and it's not upgradeable like a PC. Basically they've merged all the bad qualities of both platforms--the static, unchanging nature of consoles that make the outdated very quickly, and the high price of PCs. A small handful of people might buy it, but this will ultimately go the way of the Nokia NGage. If the Xbox can only barely survive, then this puppy won't stand a chance.

But don't tell that to the "Systems Wars "crowd we'll miss the laughs.
