Here's another article i wrote for the paper.
Let me know if i made any mistakes. Enjoy! :)
Since Nintendo first launched Gamecube in 2001, there has been a lot of controversy around the net whether it would be the last system by Nintendo or not. This old rumour is obviously bogus because Nintendo revealed new plans for their next console, codename: N5. Nintendo plans to release their next generation console in 2006, rather that 2005, which had been initially suggested. Nintendo claims it has reliable information that Microsoft and Sony also plan to release their next generation offerings in 2006 rather than 2005. Due to this change, Nintendo has pushed back N5’s release date while still sticking to their commitment, to be the first company to come out with a next generation console.
More information about N5 crept up during the holidays as the president of Nintendo, Satoru Iwata had an interview with a Japanese gaming magazine: Famitsu.
Famitsu: What can you tell us about the Gamecube 2 or N5?
Iwata: It will be able to use the games already created in the previous generation (backwards compatible). And it is something that will work. Side performances and graphics, one reached today a kind of limit with a quality, which is already close to realism, and it will be difficult to still much better do. The role of Nintendo is thus to study other ways in order to improve the experience of the player.
What does this all mean? In plain terms, N5 would be able to play games from the current Gamecube and possibly upgrade graphics. What else holds for N5 we will have to wait and see.

The smaller disc size of the Gamecube does not in any way take away from its graphics capabilities. In fact the smaller disc size helps give the Gamecube fast load times. The trade off is that large games sometimes must be split up on multiple discs.

I like to add on that point...
Sure Playstation 2 and x-box have those 8GB cds while Gamecube has the 2 point something GB cds.
BUt the fact, there hasnt been a game (atleast to my knowledge) that takes advantage of the entire 8 GBs of space that Playstation 2 and x-box offer (atleast not yet).
I dont mind the GC having more disc, it kinda adds to the illusion of making the game seem longer.

i think nintendo's new system should keep with just gaming instead of adding in a dvd player(ps2), hard drive( X box) or any other tangents. The new consoles are becoming more like stripped down computers. I also think that this is why the GC sold poorly because of it lack of features. So really it's fighting a losing battle sticking to gaming. I'm just stating my opinion on things even though this is a contradictory post lol. :p

I totally agree with you though. I also want to play a Mario game as a launch title. The several months waiting for Super Mario Sunshine to be released for the Gamecube was a LONG wait for me.

Actually, that kills two worms with one skewer. The memory will be bigger, and it means this will be able to play DVDs and CDs.
Rock on Ninty!

For some reason this reminds me of a product I saw only marketed for Japan, The Panasonic Q. Basically a Panasonic DVD player and a GCN combined into one console with better quality. Although it is only in Japan, you can convert the text into English and even play the English games you buy without a hitch. ^__^ The only downside is that it costs around $500 and I heard it gets annoying to have to change the text to English every time you turn it on.
But back on topic, it would be awesome to play older games on one system. Save money on having to buy all of those consoles just to play the great games.

Wow...you realize that most hardcore gamers play more on computers than on consoles...they have a lot better graphics and processing power, but you wouldn't understand...you own a gamecube ;)

Welcome thristyg to the board!
Though i find that your first post in this board is assuming to much is rather harsh. 1st off, how would u know if Neocucumber isnt a computer gamer? I own a PC and a gamecube, and perfer to play more on the computer. Second I agreed with Neocucumber's post. Toasters are for toasting and snowblowers are for snow blowing. I dont think that by Nintendo including a DVD player would make any difference (other than Revolution costing more). Back then when PS2 came out, DVDs were the new thing, they were a top sell, everyone was getting DVD players and then theres game machine that was very popular AND had a DVD player in it. consumers saw it as a win win situation. Now everyone has dvd players, heck i have 2 at home (one plays DIVX cds :D). So nintendo sticking it to their roots inst a bad idea, i bet the consumer wants more (internet surfing crap), but not including a dvd player will make no effect.
