Now that I'm winding down on Mafia (I'm doing the Extreme Freeride missions now), I'm starting to get into Vietcong. I've only done the first two missions, but already it's a real rush. The second mission feels like three missions rolled into one. I'm finally starting to get the hang of it - I was getting killed a lot in the second mission (now I just spend a lot of time crouching). This game is a lot of fun, a good cross between FPS and tactical shooter. I want to send a thank you card to Illusion Software. The first two new games I bought for my new pc were Mafia and Vietcong, both by Illusion - and both rock.

I have Vietcong and I love it. I have since put it down, but I'm getting the itch to pick it back up.

Just so you know... when your in the tunnels use the flashlight. The manual says nothing about this item but it is present. Use it, because the tunnels are a pain in the arse.

Now, all I need to do is get Mafia and Hitman 2 and I'll be set for the time being. Of course GTA: Vice City, SoF2, Tron 2.0 are on my most wanted list as well.

I see that the flashlight option is only available if the tunnels are pitch black. In one early mission, you get light sticks for the upper tunnels, then the flashlight suddenly becomes available when you reach the lower tunnels. Kind of contrived and phony - the flashlight should always be there, whether you need it or not (or if they want to make the flashlight unavailable but keep it within the context of the game, have the flashlight burn out during one of the tunnel missions, forcing you to use the light sticks or stumble around in the dark).

The 'flashlight issue" was raked over the coals @ devs site. Many players were unaware it was available. The mission you refer to is called Tunnel Rat. I, like many others played the misson w/out knowing about the flashlight option [the manual said NOTTA about a flashlight]. I quickly realized that I would run out of lightsticks prior to finishing mission, so I started using every trick in the book to stretch my lightsticks [from locating position on compass, lighting a stick & then walking backwards till the light source fadded & then repeating, lol!] Some posters on the Vietcongf forum claim to have found their way out of the tunnels w/out the use of the flashlight...thats hard to believe! I started to burn out on this mission, was happy as hell to "smell fresh air"....
If you like the first few missions AKU, youre gonna love the next three. Eventually you can test your driving skills too..."Save the Outpost [its the mission I'm "parked" on @ the moment].
Vietcong is a good FPS. Im suprised other regulars here arent enjoying it [its turned into RPG land here, lol.]

Hah! I used my last light stick before going into the lower tunnels. When I started that area, I knew that if I didn't get to use the flashlight I was finished. :)

Well, I will have to wait until at least next wednesay (when I get my replacement power supply) to continue the game. Rats, I was really starting to get into the atmosphere, hanging out in my bunker, listening to the tunes and reading up about the Vietcong Code of Honor and other tidbits about 'Nam. I was all geared up to yell 'Die Commies!' all weekend. Now, I'll have to wait. :(

My Dad served three, thats THREE tours in Vietnam [talk about wacked!]. The tunel invironment reflects the reality that was the Vietnam war. The feedback I get from Vietnam Vets is that the game devs did a good job on researching many elements of the war.
If you have the mature version, some of the enemy AIs' dialogue is the same profanity "you" are shouting @ them in battle [i.e. "screw you, come & get some of this" etc, etc.].

I'm so glad I was born too late for that one. I would have spent one tour hiding behind a tree about 50 yards behind my platoon the whole time, lol!

Yeah, I know...its all to real sometimes. :( We gamers are fortunate to be looking at this war from the end of a keyboard & mouse.

Though VC's a game, it often reminds me of the hell US soldiers endured.

Actually I made it completely through the tunnels without a flashlight--not because I was being extra tough or anything, I just didn't know about it. I did it by using the mouse cursor; it would change when you were directly facing a wall. It took A LOT of trial-and-error, I spent several days trying to get through that level.

Even with the flashlight it was the worst level of the game. It should never have been included. The only reason I persisted with it was because the game, up to that point, had been so good that I figured the tunnels was just a blooper. Thankfully I was right.

The epitomy of perseverance.
I know many 'Cong players had a similar experience on this level [not discovering flashlight early on, AND also agree that this level was a "downer"].
Tunnel Rat aside, 'Cong is a good FPS.

Funniest moment yet in Vietcong. In the mission where you storm up the hill defended by VC, there are a couple of downed choppers, and one is on fire. Crocker runs over to the chopper, and catches on fire. He's screaming, and another guy runs over to help him. He then catches on fire. Before you know it, five guys are standing next to the chopper, all in flames, screaming and cursing. I watched in amusement for awhile, then joined the barbecue. I can definitely say my team was on fire in that mission!
