The good news: LucasArts is making a multiplayer action game in the same style as Battlefield 1942 but set in the Star Wars universe. Currently the title is Star Wars Battlefront.

The bad news: it's being developed concurrently for the PS2, Xbox, and PC.

LOL Uh, you mentioned Lucasarts... are they licensing the product out to Digital Illusions CE, or is a totally new venture developed and published by Lucasarts (if they even have there own dev department), and therefore has nothing at all to do with the Battlefield series?

It's in the same style as Battlefield 1942, it's not a continuation of that series (obviously). The article says that LucasArts is developing it on their own.

They just looked at all the money Battlefield 1942 is making and said "Hey, why not make a game like this with Star Wars?" If they pull it off it could be great; imagine the battle for Hoth, or the battle for the shield station on Endor. Cool!

The great big bad ugly spot is that it's being co-developed for consoles. I think by now, with recent events, you know my opinion of that.

Personnally (spelling i think), it is my oppinion that the consoles can have this hunk of junk. My oppinion of the Star Wars franchise has really been destroyed. With SWG my patience finally let go. And the game itself I can imagine would be cool at first but it would get repetive very fast (ala Battlefield 1942).

Sounds interesting.

Secret Weapons Over Normandy already employs Star Wars vehicles fighting in a WWII setting. I'm not sure what LucasArts is trying to do here. Perhaps they want to get in on the success of WWII games as of late.

As does a mod for BF1942 exist that utilizes SW models as well.

LOL... man, i'd like to see what kind of "battlefield 1942" style game would run on the PS2, not to mention XBOX. Ohhh man, i'm not even going to hold my breath on this one.

I think it's a terrific idea to have a Star Wars/BF:1942-type game.
In fact, I would like to see more games like that (especially with the bots man, so you don't have to relegate it to online-only status, otherwise, you'd just have "yet-another" online-squad-BS-type shooter, I went to the store a week or two ago, and saw a whole bunch of these.).

I think that it's "Star Wars" would make people accept it as something distinct from all the "me-too" games out there in this genre.

Plus, IT'S DIFFERENT, in that you don't have "yet-more" "generic-looking-space-marine"-type dudes blasting each other to bits, or some me-too WWII online shooter/combat game.
Need something fresh, in my opinion.

A Battlefield 1942-type game on a console is a JOKE.
I'd love to see if they can actually pull off such a game like this on a console with just a clunky gamepad as your controller.

I would love to see a good star wars BF1942 clone, but if designed for PC.... any BF1942 clone that can run on a PS2 has got to be a joke... heh
