PSX spec sheet shrinks as Sony rushes production
Multi-function, uber-machine due to market early; however, it will make its appearance without numerous previously-touted capabilities.
TOKYO--Sony will release the PSX on December 12 in Japan, one day earlier than expected--but consumers will have to do without certain specs the PSX was previously promoted as having.
Sony revealed today that PSX production has been rushed in order to get the appliance to retailers in time for the holiday shopping season. And while the company plans to offer firmware updates to owners, the machine will be missing a few of the capabilities that were originally announced.
Changes to PSX's specs are as follows.
- HDD to DVD dubbing has been downgraded from 24x speed to 12x speed.
- CD-R playback will not be supported.
- DVD+RW playback will not be supported.
- MP3 file format will not be supported.
- TIFF and GIF file formats will not be supported.
- Sony's Cybershot movie format will not be supported.
And oddly, for a TV appliance, the PSX will not come with an antenna output; so users that plan to use both their TV and PSX may need to split their antenna. Also, the PSX will come with an internal Ethernet adapter, but it will not be compatible with the popular PlayStation BB service at launch.
The PS2 compatible DVD-HDD recorder is offered in two models. The top end model of (99,800 yen, or about $906) comes with a 250 GB Hard drive, while the low end model (79,800 yen, or about $725) comes with a 160 GB hard drive.

Hey, you gotta understand. He's the game, he's Moody (I am talking about emtion, of course) and he needs to gloat through doing pointless things.
I wonder anyone was acutally looking forward to this expensive item? I think Sony made it just because it could. With almost 900 dollar price tag, I would not buy it even with the original spec.

Yeah, posting a piece in the same forum is a bit far into nerd country.
Anyways, I wouldn't have bought it either. Don't see the point.

I was not exicited about the PSX either.... maybe because at that price tag there would be NWIGGE I could have bought one.....
Perhaps Sony cut back the features for the PSX with plans to utilize some of those abilities in the next PS console (PS3?).
Just a guess.......

Moody is like the king of nerds. Look at his starting post, he just copy/paste. Nothing else. Blah.
Regular people like us are not going to buy one. Recording TV shows onto DVDR? That is light years ahead of what I am ready to do with my TV.

I am confused as what Sony has in the pocket for PS3. According to most of news out there, Cell is not going to make it in time for PS3. So what is PS3 going to use? I don't think Sony cut back these features for any reason other than making the holiday season this year.

Ok... I know i don't keep up on techie news like I should. Mostly because my dial-up link makes surfing high-res, high image usage game websites almost an impossiblity.
But, can you fill me in on CELL or point me in the right direction with a link?

Hell if you have digital cable you can do this already.Plus I dont think"The PSX"really will be considered a game console anyway.Check out the latest:
Sony on PSX: Not a Game System
A few interesting comments on what the PSX almost wasn't.
December 03, 2003 - Japan's largest English daily, The Japan Times, features some comments from Sony's senior planning manager for the PSX, Kenji Matsuoka. Matsuoka and Sony apparently believe the PSX will garner little, if any, consumer demand as a game console. "We, at one point of development, even thought to dropping the game function altogether," comments Matsukoa.
Analysts apparently agree with Sony's assessment, with Shunji Yamashina at Morgan Stanley commenting "It is not made for game players but for people who want to buy DVD recorders.
The PSX launches to Japan on 12/13. Will gamers or electrophiles flock to the system? Stay tuned for the week following the 13th for sales information. Courtesy of IGN news.
Dont hate because I'm more important around here that you are Folken.Besides I'm still waiting for you to grow a set of balls and gimme a rematch.Hell I'll even sweeten the deal for you:One match,on Xbox live,3 on 3,Capcom vs.SNK 2.Winner gets to keep their username on all boards.Loser can never use their usernames on the boards again.
In other words. If I lose I cant use"The Game"username ever again. And if you lose then you cant ever use the username "Folken 001"ever again. Its your call Folken.

It's up a couple posts. ^

Ok... nevermind about the Cell question.
Used Google and got the skinny on it.
Talk about rumors and speculation!
You can find an article about Sony's Cell chip HERE (http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=9106)
I do know that my PS2 has a nice big empty space inside it right behind the peripheral network adaptor.....
Perhaps Sony will come out with some kind of expansion that will fit nicley in that hole and can fill the void for PS2 gamers until the PS3 is ready.
I don't know, but the future is going to be exiciting and I suspect it may be suprising.

Sorry I didn't read this until today.
I think adding stuff to Ps2 will not help the problem and try to deal Xbox Next with PS2 would be suicide. I am thinkin Sony probably will just use a somewhat modified version of Cell and make PS3 less powerful. As long as it's powerful enough, I am all game. Knowing there is a possibility for FF7-2, I'll buy anything to play it.

Its a PS2 with a built in hard drive and a whole lot of other stuff.Right now its price tag is well over $600 bucks. It'll stay in Japan for now then its supposed to come here at a later time.(The PSX was released in December of 2003 in Japan)
So basically the PSX is a videogame console/computer/entertainment system.(And people always accused the Xbox of being more PC)But is it worth paying that much for it? I dont think so.
