View Full Version : Spirit of old syswars may be lost forever?

Not that I am an avid poster on VGR, I have posted on occassion, but I am an avid reader of posts on VGR. After reading the new system wars "guidelines", depending on the extent of moderation for "what we don't want (system wars) used for:Flaming, trolling, subjects completely off topic from system debates, etc. We'll be moderating this forum a bit more than before to maintain a higher level of quality. Childish banter may be closed or deleted from now on.", it seems that the old spirit of system wars may be lost.

What now will I have to read about but polite debate about the merits of each system? I feel the boredom setting in now.

After a week of championing for a new system wars forum, the posters wishes were realized, but for what? If indeed the new syswars is policed as the guidelines state, then a good what-for should be made for even adding a seperate forum.

Yes, indeed, sometimes the childish banter, flaming, trolling and digression got out of hand, but isnt that what made system wars what it was. I hope in my continued viewing of the "new" system wars, that the spirit of the "old" board will be allowed to flourish. For what would system wars be without Fragmaster flaming RH flaming Slade flaming The Game flaming Folken flaming Glock flaming GF78 flaming everyone, just to name a few.

Hats off to the posters that made system wars what it was, you know who you are, and hopefully will be allowed to continue the spirit.

The new site admin hasn't worked with us before and we haven't worked with him/her/them before. This is kinda new to everyone.

Give it a little time. A few posters will eventually "test the waters" of system wars to see how far we can go. And if a line is crossed, then the new admin can simply let us know. I don't think it's anyone's intent to start kicking VGR vetrans off left and right. And, Robert-The-Rambler is still our moderator and he is familiar with System Wars. (Hey, remember when Robert first started moderating us. It took him a while to adjust to us and we adjusted to him.)

Eventually, over the next coming weeks, we will develop a new symbiosis with the new admins. We will learn what we can and can't do, but I don't think it's going to be vastly different from the original System Wars.

And, to end my post, I'd like to say just how damn dissapointed I am in my Cube. I've had it for about 2 years, and there've been, what, 3 or 4 games I enjoyed playing on it. Quite frankly, after F-zero, I don't see much of anything to peak my interest. You cubers must have the patience of a saint, becaues I wouldn't put up with this kind of crap from my Xbox.

Que rebuttel from Gadfly (or Sauron, if he's on anymore) ........

Why did you have to mention my name there?

Speaking of RH and The Game, whatever happened to those two? I know that RH had some problems with logging on with his account but my question is did he succeed? I also haven't heard from The Game ever since this new V Bulletin forum arrived.

Yeah, where is everybody? The rapture happened didn't it? Thank god I'm still here. The uneccesary blinding glare and slippery surface of gold streets is a safety hazard I can do without.

Anyway, I hope systems wars doesn't lose its unique character; I don't really care if there's a little less name calling or fussing over whether somone is named reggie or wafflehut or muddy. That whole name thing and admin tattling--I don't care if that is gone for good.

Good question. Now that I think of it, you're a nobody on this board. Must have been because of seeing a lot of recent posts from you. I should have mentioned Darwin or Gadfly instead. I'm sure they would accept it for what it was, an honor to be mentioned.

To Darwin:

I feel the same way about my Cube. The games I have played I have enjoyed, but they are few and far between. BTW, I have no interest in F-Zero, even though I am a big racing fan. I bought Nascar 2003 for the Cube, but the controller sucks big a$$ for my configuration, using the shoulder buttons for gas/brake. So no more racers on the Cube, I will stick with the Xbox for that.

I'm tired of a thumb button being used for racing games. . . it wears out the right thumb for no good reason. The xbox shoulder buttons used for gas is indeed a nice configuration for racing.

That Kirby racing game isn't on my shopping horizon, but I'll probably give it a rent--I'm curious about a racing game where you only push the button to slow down. When you think about, why require the player to hold an accelleration button all the time; it's about time that max cruise control become a standard option in racing.

As a poster of the original System Wars, formally known as "Whoop", I totally agree with sjsharky, I loved going to System Wars, it exited me to an extent. Hopefully we can bend this new System Wars to what the original was like, although I'm sorry to say I have not seen posters like GF78, Richard Hobbes, etc........in the new boards....hopefully they join sooner or later, rather, sooner.

GF78 might be around..I saw a "Gaming Geezer 78" pop up on the members viewing list around here..I'm thinking thats probably him.

Dunno where RH is at though. Grognard showed up so I'm guessing he won't be far behind.

That was a high quality comeback. ole Fraggy. Do yourself a favor, leave the trash talking to the masters. I am sorry I even mentioned you in the same sentence as the others, the real trash-talkers. What the hell was I thinking? The fact that you would even ask why I did, either smacks of your feelings of guilt not wanting to be associated with them, afraid maybe that you may be singled out as a troublemaker, or feelings of inferiority that you dont feel that you have game enough to be mentioned in the same breath. I say a lot of the latter mixed with a little of the former.

Besides, I was making a point about something else in the post and was not singling out any one person. Obviously, you dont have the wherewithal to comprehend a complete paragraph, so I hope the fact that I replied with a complete paragraph here, and not fragmented sentences, wont confuse you.

BTW, whatever I say is right!........................to me.

Whatever man, you've burned enough brain cells for one day. I don't even think you have any left.

And you said "duh" to your own sentence. That is very normal of you. I've seen a lot of people do that daily........NOT!

BTW, I've noticed that you used a lot of long English words, to make ppl think that you're smart but your only skill is being able to look up complex words in your Webster's dictionary. I bet you carry it in your pocket 24/7 - even when you go to sleep.

But Sharky, I think that even you're smart enough to know the guidelines.

So I'll just end this useless flaming. BTW, this topic does need to die slowly.

see, I don't HAVE to resort to flaming to get my views across nor do any other posters with some common sense and intelligence. Despite how much I may disagree with people like Slade or Folken, I still hold respect for them because they usually answer with an educated response, not some infantile babbling. I feel as though everyone is entitled to their own opinions and, if anything, these new guidelines are gonna help things out greatly around here. I'd rather have intelligent debate over some moron posting 10 threads in a row spamming up the joint wouldn't you? Flaming can be fun, but there is a difference in flaming with truth and obnoxious flaming with no point.

I see your point of view tappy, the thing is that the beauty of the old forum was the entertainment value. I enjoyed the intelligent debates, but there was nothing better than to watch a couple of posters duke it out, if you will. OK, occassionally we got crap like "the game" making a big deal out of his moniker and real name, but even that was highly entertaining and I wasn't even involved, it was just fun to read. That is my point.

I dont want to see a bunch of B.S. spamming or any crap like that. There is, however, a sense of camaraderie on the boards between the regular posters, that no matter how angry, frustrated, or embarrassed someone got they would be back. A kind of bonding, like you would have with your regular friends outside of the boards. Talk some smack and razz each other, but in the end its all good fun and entertainment.

I'm all for intelligent debates and exchange of ideas, I have gotten a lot of differing viewpoints on gaming from this site. But in the end, the reason I keep coming back, aside from the reviews, is for the drama, like any good soap opera or reality show.

In a nutshell, I guess system wars is its own reality show.

Well the old "Wars" were certainly entertaining for the most part that's for sure. There was a lot of total BS posted too. A lot of posters were really "full" of themselves but I found it came down to too many of the same people arguing the same points over and over. Most people really weren't interested in what other's had to say only with what they themselves had to say. It'll be interesting to see if things change for the good on the new board.

I liked a heated discussion as well as the next poster and actually managed to come to a mutual understanding many times with even the most stubborn of posters much to my surprise.

There IS hope that this new version of the System Wars will actually turn out to be better than the old. Only time will tell. I think many posters are still having problems activating their memberships here...I know I did. I had to change my user name, and create a new account, re-register, and still had to go to the Admin for help to enable me to post. Maybe that's what's keeping some of the regulars away...oh well...

After reading this thread, I have to say that it looks like the "spirit" of the old System Wars is still here, sort of.

At first, I believed that the "no flaming" policy would result in a very boring forum, but now I believe differently. Now that we will have to reply with ideas, instead of insults, it will kind of weed out the posters who can hold their own in a intelligible debate, and those who can just hurl insults.

Should be interesting.

I see that people are already testing the waters in here. I wanted to post the guidelines in the new system right away. We don't want people going at eachothers' throats. That kind of behavior drives new members away and intimidates people from participating - no matter what kind of disclaimer you post. However, if we post rules and persuade people not to attack others, it helps everyone.

I'm not saying we'll delete each and every post that resembles an insult, but we will begin monitoring this forum a little more to prevent all out, childish flame wars. We'll allow the members to help us decide what they feel is inappropriate - you may have noticed that each post has a little "Report this post to a Moderator" link next to it in the bottom righthand corner. Once people learn how effective this link can be to help clean up the forum, we'll see things iron themself out. It's not an "anything goes" forum anymore, but we're also not going to enforce martial law. We'll let the community help us keep things clean. It's funny, in most cases, the ones who object loudly to our enforcing of the rules have been mostly those who used the old forum as a place to insult others regularly.

With everyone helping out by "reporting" the obvious flames/flamers, it shouldn't be a problem going forward. That's the beauty of this new system. People can easily point out what they don't like - let me rephrase that, people can report what they feel is offensive/inappropriate behavior. Just be sure you give a valid reason when reporting a post and moderators will consider removing it.

When I think of System Wars, I think of a show like the O'Reilly factor. You may have heard Bill use the term "No Spin Zone". The forum is not supposed to be a friendly forum. Not everyone is supposed to feel welcome. If somebody is blatantly trying to "Spin" they deserve to be flamed with creative insults. When some knucklehead trys to pass off certain info as wonderful news proving their system is best or getting better when it isn't, the various fans of other systems speak out with disdain. The point is that in the end everybody laughs or at least something is learned. The GD forum is supposed to be the forum where all are welcome and where more traffic should be with a wide range of topics. I think if people don't like the hard-nosed atmosphere of System Wars they should simply slide over to GD where the debates, if any, are much less heated as they should be. Now I've tried to make sure that all flames at least have a point in the past but sometimes the points of some posters (cough cough) from Canada leave us all puzzled as to their meaning.

I don't know. I get a kick out of somebody calling another an idiot while trying to out argue somebody on any given topic. It is hilarious when emotion gets involved.

You see, the only thing I can say in response to this is, is that I apologize that some of the childish behavior wasn't addressed a long time ago and became commonplace. The same has happened in other forums on our other sites. We have not had the resources to keep our forums up to par when it comes to our guidelines in the past. Now that we're getting a chance to get back to doing so, some people would rather not see order maintained. Others however, are relieved. I'm sorry guys, but just because everyone was used to (and enjoyed) watching others get insulted, offended, and spit on, doesn't mean we should continue to allow it.

I'll say it again, we're not planning on deleting each and every post that resembles an insult, but we will begin monitoring this forum a little more to prevent all out childish flame wars, bickering, insults, offensive and inappropriate behavior. We'll allow the members to help us decide what they feel is inappropriate with the little "Report this post to a Moderator" link in the bottom righthand corner of each post. We don't feel the bullies and trolls should have free reign to mold the forum into what they want it to be. Instead, everyone should have a voice - and we feel the "report" link will help with this.

After reading the new system wars "guidelines", depending on the extent of moderation for "what we don't want (system wars) used for:Flaming, trolling, subjects completely off topic from system debates, etc. We'll be moderating this forum a bit more than before to maintain a higher level of quality. Childish banter may be closed or deleted from now on.", it seems that the old spirit of system wars may be lost.I can't believe that this thread is still getting so much traffic! Look folks, I think it's safe to say now that things are going to be okay. The admins wanted to clearly state a "get tough" policy for the record, but it seems that they're not going to go out of their way to be super-militant about it. They've ignored swear words (somebody dropped several "sh*t"'s [umm, in the verbal sense that is!] in a thread about PC's vs. Macs), there seems to be just as much flaming and trolling as there always was... and I even sent the admin a smart-ass private message to push his buttons, more or less asking him to yank my account. Even then, he still didn't take the bait.

All in all, I think the admins are going to be a cool bunch. They don't seem power-crazy, or relishing the thought of policing every thread 24/7. They've been very particular to repeatedly point out the "Complain about this post" feature, which tells me that they're only really interested in stepping into the fray when somebody complains about it. Basically that just means you shouldn't overly-flame newbies until they've gotten used to the community and proved themselves a bit, and it also means that any regular who stoops to using the "Complain about this post" option should be shunned by everyone for doing it. I think that's a pretty reasonable environment to have, and I'm comfortable with it.

you know system wars are getting back to usual when nearly half the posts are Geezer's which could all probably fit into one but his ADD prevents his collective thought.
