The word from Eidos Forum Administrator is that DE2 [Invisible War] will launch from N.C/US on Dec 2nd, ahead of pc version :(
It will be in some retail stores as early as 12/3.

Are there any regulars Xboxers here that eagerly await this title?

I played the first one. It had some good characters, but I didn't enjoy it because of the 1st person-only view. Is Deus Ex II going to have an optional 3rd person view?

No third person view. Just curious, is it Deus Ex that you prefer 3rd person or all shooters?

[Questions # 1 & 4.]</div>

Sure thing.

Gray Death was destributed (or "administered" depending on point of view) to the people of New York through their water system. It was disguised at a chlorine water spill in conjunction with the local water treatment plant.

You get to see the first hint of this in a general news bulletin. It is an article about "Chlorine and Water Treatment: Report for the New York City Council, 2053". In this article, they are trying to address fears that Chlorine is harmful. One paragraph says, "... on the other hand, opponents claim chlorine compounds can cause cancer, infertility, or birth defects. However, recent research indicates that the increased risk of cancer from chlorinated water is minimal or nonexistent." Almost like a preemtive rumor control.

At the same terminal, you can also read an advisory: "Residents of Manhattan and Brooklyn should be aware that last week's chlorine
spill in the Hudson River now appears to have washed ashore and is interfering with the operation of at least one water processing plant."

These are references to the Grey Death's delivery system, although the gamer is not really aware of it at the time they read these. It is foreshadowing.

Later in the game, you come upon a computer terminal.

"<COMMENT>MJ12 lab</COMMENT>

Subject: Delivery

The main shipment will be arriving shortly, so insure that all chlorine delivery tests are completed. Your recommendation of the water treatment facilities for insertion has also been approved; your studies of vector diffusion and initial casualty counts were persuasive."

From the man himself, Walton Simons. Doesn't get anymore incriminating than this. "Vector diffusion" refers to the virus as the route to diffuse it's contents. For example, in the real world there are currently trials investigating the use of non-harmful viruses as a vector to get genetic material into human cells.

Now, onto question 4, what is project DIBBUK? Project DIBBUK created the black helicopter that plays an intergral role in the Deus Ex game. From the game's text:

"PROJECT DIBBUK
Overview

Domination/5F Clearance ONLY

... the noted failure of previous attempts to create a low profile rotary
aircraft involved the acquisition and retrofitting of available military
hardware that had neither the range, ceiling, nor electromagnetic transparency to avoid numerous eyewitness accounts or unauthorized military interactions. In addition to exacerbating public misconceptions about governmental operations, such encounters also jeopardized several key missions. PROJECT DIBBUK was initiated to address this issue through the creation of a "stealth" aircraft that could be used as a platform for a number of mission objectives..."

This is a book that I remember seeing at least 3 times in the game. It also brings up another interesting Deus Ex tidbit: the clearance levels. You see these cryptic XXXXXXX/number Clearance levels throughout various texts in the game. There are actually several layers of clearances, obviously given out on a need-to-know basis. And the higher up you are in command, the higher your clearance. For example, in the email from Simons to all the UNATCO people warning them about J.C. Denton's rougue status, he starts his email with: "FOR ALL OPERATIVES, CLEARANCE ARCHANGEL/1B AND ABOVE". Also, in the manual called "UNATCO handbook", it says: "CLASSIFICATION: The U.N. has nine levels of security above Top Secret. This manual and all material that is not otherwise marked is classified as Angel/0A."

According to a website at caltech,
"The known security levels are:

Angel/0A
Archangel/1B
Principal/2C
Domination/5F
Throne/6G
Seraphic/8X
The 3D, 4E, and 7H levels are not mentioned in the game."

I am currently wearing my Deus Ex 2 t-shirt. I still have some concerns regarding the frame rate, which apparently has been a problem. There are some excellent pc/xbox titles launching on the same day. DX2, Max Payne 2, and Armed and Dangerous.

Deus Ex 1 had inconsistent and problematic framerates, especially on the PS2. Luckily, the first game was set up so that you could still play it well with the low framerate.

Thanks for relating Deus Ex trivia info Darwin, you either have a mind like a steel trap or have reams of text on DE, lol!

I never noticed framerate problems on PC version, but have always kept my system upgraded. Did the framerate problem for PS2 adversley affect the enjoyment of game?

For those interested, check out some newer screens of DE2:

Every text in the DE game is there, along with some commentary to help fully understand the game. Although it's not a fancy site, the content is great for any DE fan. Using the "find" feature in your browswer is very useful to navigate this LONG page.

I've played the PC and PS2 versions. Overall, I like the PS2 version a little better because the controls were more streamlined and I could play it with my controller. However, the framerate was like 10 fps in certain areas for the PS2 version. In the PC version, I had bouts of lower framerates (on my older system) but not nearly to the extent that the PS2 version had. It's hard to say whether or not the framerate adversely affected my enjoyment of the game. Overall, I'd have to say no. DE 1 didn't, for the most part, require super-precision aiming on the PS2 version. Eidos implemented a nice aim-assist feature to make the game more playable with the dualshock 2 controller, so low framerates usually didn't result in messing with your aim. The framerate was more of an aesthetic neusance, but only because other aspects of the game are so well done you can forgive it. However, as the years have gone by and I've experienced more games, I may not be so forgiving of a low framerate. For example, had the new Rainbow Six 3 for Xbox had this degree of framerate issues, I would have returned the game.

Actually, the worst aspect of the PS2 version of DE was the LONG load times... add this to the fact that the levels were broken up into more load-areas than the PC version.

Massive resource for DE, thanks!

Re: PS2 version, I heard that if you had a force feedback controller, you could feel the security bots treading ground as they past by [maybe they could implement this into a force feedback mouse option, lol]

Yes, I remember that feature. And the rumble was variable, getting stronger as the bots got closer. In fact that feature was useful a few times when hiding from them and trying to judge whether they're coming or going. You didn't even have to peek your head out and risk getting seen. Very useful when J.C. had to break out of the MJ-12 labs/jail area.

Spastic already took my answer... word for word (the bastich)!

But instead of just saying "ditto", I wanted to add that...
I believe the XBox is getting yet another GOTY contender in this game! Wolfenstein, KOTOR, Crimson Skies... and soon Ninja Gaiden and this!

I don't get too excited about pre-release movies, but after watching the DX:IW movie on the latest OXM demo disk, I was... awestruck! I don't know why, but I am very confident about this game.

All shooters. More specifically, all shooters with a good main character design, or at least a 3rd person option. I tend to see the game better through 3rd person view.

I suspect DE2:Invisible War for Xbox will have a considerable improvement in gameplay over its original version [Conspiracy], which was a port to PS2. Xbox gets a dedicated developement of DE2, not a port job.

Im still trying to dig up info confirming that while both Xbox & PC versions are released simultaneously, they were developed independently. That is to say neither is a port for the other.

[my PC comrades have doubts about DE2, claiming its a console port & will suffer from the transition]
