What a load of poop. It's funny cause they go down the list of PS2 games and end up mentioning the same ones several times yet don't even mention 75% of Xbox LIVE games. Completely bias and one sided. Gamespy are idiots in my eyes now. This list the the most uninformed I've seen in a long time.
The bottom line?
Sega Sports games are available online on PS2 and Xbox and Sega sports are better than EA.
SOCOM is overrated poop and Counter Strike will put it in its place.
THPS is a dead series, THUG is redundant BS, the pic feature is gimmicky
Oh, that's all PS2 has to offer...oh, don't forget the always crappy 989 studios.

Maybe you shouldn't judge PS2 online until you've played it.

Online fighting game(s)?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought XBox only had one online fighting game. On top of that, the one fighting game it had lags to hell, and kills the gameplay. You can use the one fighting game as an argument for XBox live I guess, but it certainly doesn't make the service seem all that great.
The THPS series innovatives more between iterations than the upteenth fps that XBox has going for it. What's gonna keep Halo 2 from being redundant? Being able to hold 2 guns?
XBox Live is a boring retread of the games PC users have been playing for ages. PS2 online IS the way to ago. At least they put console games online...

Yes the Xbox currently has one online fighting game and one on the way with DOA online.Plus the lag also depends on if both people have fast internet connections.I've played C VS SNK2 on a couple of occasions. One time was lag free while the other had a lot more than usual.Plus Xbox live has more variety of online games than PS2 does.
Dont hate on Halo 2 because nothing on the PS2 or the GC will hold a candle to it.Besides Halo 2 will have what the GC doesnt have:Something online.Oh thats right the GC has ONE online game.LOL!
At least the Xbox has more games online than the PS2 does. You've been drinking alot of haterade. You need to cut back.

i'm very much in agreeance with tappy.
the artical reads like the author is really nit-picking over the xbox's weakpoints while bloating up the ps2's strong points. You notice he didn't mention the rampant cheating that has made Socom1 unplayable.
He also doesn't say much about the XSN shortcommings, he only comments that it's not as good as the 989 system:
"my surprise, 989 Online is as impressive as XSN, and in some cases does things better than Microsoft's vaunted sports network. "
examples, please! Oh, wait, he forgot to give one...
And come now, all you ps2 phreaks even concede that the xbox is the FPS king. He's putting Socom (a game that can be played with gameshark exploits) and a future game that is not even released yet up against:
rainbowsix 3, ghost recon, ghost recon:IT, Unreal Champ, Wolfenstein, Sof2 (and any others I forgot). Well, if he's counting games that aren't released yet, why didn't counterstrike and halo2 count for anything? Because he's writing a one-sided argument, that's why. I thought Socom was a third person game? In that case, let's add Mechassault to the xbox live lineup.
and he gives this bout to the PS2? pah-leeze!
Xbox live has a friends list. Xbox live has voice in every game. Xbox live doesn't require an adapter. Xbox live gives us up to the second statistics on every player in every game. Xbox live has an internet integration where you can check stats and friend status via the web. Xbox live gives us downloadable content. Xbox live is broadband only (and so is Socom2, so i don't want to hear any negativity about this, folken). Xbox Live is cheat free.
Yet he doesn't mention any of these positive aspects of the service. About the only convincing conclusion he comes to is that PS2 online has more games. well, the ps2's library size hasn't swayed me yet and probably wont sway me any time soon.
As far as xbox live being nothing more than PC online gaming in disguise, let me offer you this: I have a mean gaming PC and an xbox. I've got Rainbow Six 3 for both systems. Which one do I play both online and off? The xbox version. Why? 2 reasons: Accessability and Dolby 5.1. Xbox live is infinately slicker than pc gaming online. No worries about patches, no worries about a standard voice communication running in the background and having to use a dedicated voice app server. No worries about getting around or through a firewall to use said voice app. No worries about using a number of instant messaging programs to keep tabs on all of your friends. No worries about relaying server IP's to multiple friends over multiple instant message programs... you get the picture? Good.

Another thing this moron mentions that PS2 with SOCOM 1 and 2 are on par with Xbox with online FPS...SOCOM ISN'T EVEN FPS, It's 3rdPS! WTF?! DUUUUUHHH...I swear I think that gamespy is run by monkeys sometimes. How an article with as much inaccurate information gets published on a site with supposed high regard is beyond me.
Everquest is a joke on PS2 and I'd imagine you'd be hard pressed to find a gamer who would choose EQ PS2 over PS0 Xbox.
First off the guy goes off and names 3 games with 3 genres not even represented by PS2 online, tennis, dogfighting, and mechassault, then doesn't mention Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO, the ONLY online fighter in America.
It's rather sad that Gamespy would kiss EA's butt the way they do. Look at this new Rising Sun rubbish to hit the shelves, even the simpletons over at Gamepro.com hate it.
He goes from topic to topic when he gets to XSN vs. 989 as well, as before he was vaunting the Xbox features but considering them less important that content then he doesn't even mention that XSN sports are much better than 989 when it comes to CONTENT. He just goes on a rant about features...this guy needs to prioritize or something.
Sorry, but if 2 player races in SSX3, or cop-op mode in ROTK are considered good content compared to the likes of 16 player action with no lag and better graphics than PS2 could ever dream of in Crimson Skies then this guy must be on crack.

Because they hate the fact their Xbox Live isn't as good. Another thing to add here btw, there isn't a 50 dollar annual fee for most of online PS2 games. That is a huge plus. Also, Sony doesn't attempt to add doggy poop to your system against your will. That is another big plus.
Xbot#1: HOLY COW Xbox Live is freaking huge! It uses broadband and is monitored by M$. I don't know much about it, but it's just awesome!!
Xbot#2: Damn straight, dudes. Xbox is the way to go. I mean, it's made by The Americans. How big is that? It's like....isn't U.S the biggest country in the whole wide world?
Xbot#3: PS2 online totally blows man. It doesn't even charge yearly fee to play. That is like the BIG sign of being inferior. Xbox Live costs me 50 bones! Now, I am sure XBL is on the way to success! Hobalycowdoeh! I love my Xbox!!!
Xbot#1: Lets stop wasting our time, mannnn! Let's play something with our X.B.L, a.k.a the greatest technology introduced to mankind since like atemic boom...u know the thing that killed all the Japanese 50 years ago? That is why Japan is no more. We Americans are the Gods, dooooood!
Xbot#3: So what are we going to play?

My post on Gamespy is on crack to think that PS2 is better than Live really sheds light on just how great Xbox live is doing as of late. And with Counter-Strike coming next week to the Xbox you can kiss SOCOM II goodbye. As much as PC heads love Counter Strike.Dont be surprised to see those numbers of Xbox live double if not triple once CS becomes available on Live.

Ah yes, nothing like a four year old game to prop up the X-box. Anyways, check a little into how Socom 2 did and maybe you'll see how PS2 online is doing.

Alright, you guys know that i usually don't agree with Tappy, but i'm going to back him up on this claim.
SOCOM was indeed overrated due to the fact that there are no other tactical multiplayer games for PS2. When Counter Strike is released, you guys will discover why this game is still the most popular team based mutliplayer FPS (it was released in 2000). In all honesty, i've never played SOCOM 2 due to my dissapointing experience with the first one, so i won't comment on that.
Everquest for PS2? When i saw the screen shots for this game i almost had to laugh... Seriously folks, how is Sony going to update the damn game when the PS2 doesn't have a hard-drive? So, i guess you get stuck with a MMORPG that can't evolve? Also, it doesn't have voice support and many of the players are too cheap to buy the damn key-board... now that is WEAK. But FFXI is being released next year, so there is still hope on the PS2 MMORPG, but i just can't see how the PS2 is going to be able to crank out those beautiful graphics that i've witnessed on PCs.
Also, i'm a HUGE fan of fighting games, and guess what, PS2 doens't have a SINGLE online fighting game... WUZ UP WIT DAT? I'm tempted to buy an XBOX just because of this reason alone (PC's never have good fighting games).
At this point, i don't see ANY PS2 online games thats gone above and beyond my expectations.

I do not understand the logic that free online gaming is necessarily better than one you pay to use?
You have been framed for murder. You have the right to remain silent .... you have the right to an attourney. If you cannot afford one, one will be appointed to you for free. Now .... would you choose the public defender (no charge) or hire a lawyer (for fee) ?

Dude, the addiction to EQ isn't funny, i was recently reading an article regarding a mother sueing Sony for the death of her son. I guess her son was playing EQ for 8 hours a day, and finally he blew his brains out. Unfortunate, but i don't see how the blame lies in EQ. She's sueing Sony for not having a "warning disclaimer"...

Some woman sued McDonald's because their coffee was hot... and won.
I've played several PS2 online games. Socom, Madden, EQ, (I survived it) My Street, Frequency and a few others. The nice thing about it is you can pick and choose and it doesn't cost you anything but the cost of the game, (minus EQ) and you can even rent them if you want. This is great for people not sold on it completely, but like to dabble or play online now and then. And actually the list of Ps2 onlines are many. It's just that Socom and EQ gets all the press. No, it's not as nice as all the bells and whistles Xbox Live has, but game per game, I think PS2 holds its own.

You haven't even PLAYED a PS2 game online and you say PS2 online definitely beats XBL? Wow! I haven't played either one online so I can't really say but come on folken...how do you expect anyone to take your post seriously?
Let me do a little calculation here...$50.00 a year for XBL equates to $4.17 a month...I "give" more than that to the people collecting outside the local supermarkets for the American Vets, "The Blind," and the local highschool sports teams on a weekly basis...
oh well...

and what of it? I have played XBL and I think nothing sucks more than having it for 50 dollars a year. With that logic, PS2 online has to be better just base on the fact it costs nothing. Yea, it's 4.17 plus tax per month, it still heck a lot more than 0 dollars a month. And, which of the American Vets, "The Blind" and the local highschool sports teams a service? Perhaps you are confused on what donation is? I already explained my logic in one of my previous posts. Mine aren't that long. It would be cool if you read them first.
I don't expect any of xbots to take my posts seriously. Right now, to them, nothing beats XBL, no matter what people say.

PS2 online just has too meager of an online library. It's missing too many key genres. FPS for instance. Screw 3rd person shooters, they all suck. First person is the only way to go!

So what makes 3rd person shooters suck anyway?
I hate to tell you this Tappy, but if all you had were a bunch of FPS's to play deathmath with then all the variety and gameplay you brag about online having would eventually be sucked dry. There's only so many times you can play deathmatch before it starts becoming a little repetitive.

Ha, weren't we just talking about staying on topic? Are you on topic right now?
You can bring up the whole you losing to me over and over. The bottomline is, you lost. Give over it buddy.
I dont' care which party has better lineup or whatnot. I heard some of the games like PSO on Xbox were fun then I heard Socom on PS2 was a lot of fun to play as well. I don't know how good PS2 online is, but based on what I have experienced with XBL, XBL definitely is not as good as PS2 online because of the fact that M$ charges you for the crappy service. Why can't they make it free like Sony?
As a guy who doesn't care for online gaming, that is my logic. Take it or leave it.

Shafted said he would've made these matches available for people to download but he's busy with his job. I don't think that will ever get done. But, you really didn't miss much. There was so much lag you would think these matches were played by a scrub(me) and a 2 years old(moody).

I own neither a subscription to XBL nor a PS2 Network adapter. I have played two online console games in my entire life. I haven't played an online computer game since Starcraft.
Before you start telling me that this means "my opinion doesn't count," read the rest of my post. As an outsider who is interested in getting into online gaming, I am one of the people who will keep the whole service up and running. Without new blood like myself, the huge gaming corperations after nothing but profits will forget about it and find the next big thing. I own both an X-box and a PS2 so here's my comparison:
Communication: An essential aspect of online gaming; if you can't talk to your friends and taunt your opponents, what's the point? The fact the ALL XBL games have voice chat is a great feature. PS2 offers voice chat in most of it's newer games, but I'd still give the edge to XBL in this category.
Hardware: X-box has it's modem already built in. PS2 does not. Not hard to pick a winner there is it? But factor in the cost section below and I'd call it a tie.
Extra Features: From what I know about X-box Live, both from your posts and the little burlbs I skim in magazines, it supports a lot of little things that make it more of a sigular online community. Buddy lists that span different games, national rankings, etc. This would seem to give it the edge on the seperate neigborhoods for each PS2 game, but to me none of that is really important and the PS2 games offer similar services in their seperate games. So I'd say it's more or less a tie.
Games: Really this is the most important catagory to me. If you don't give me any games I want to play online with other people, then I don't want your service. If you want to here an in-depth analysis of which games I think of when I think of each service, I can write another post. From what I can see the PS2 offers a wider variety of game types which may or may not be quality titles. XBL plays it's strengths and does it well in the game department, but FPS deathmatches do get old after a while. (and I don;t play many racers, online or otherwise). I give games to the PS2. Go ahead and rant.
Support: M$ seems like they want their Live service to succeed and will continue to support and update it as long as people continue to pay. PS2 has seen a huge expansion of it's online library in the past months, especially from EA. So it doesn't look like they're going to forget about those suckers who bought a Network Adapeter right at launch. A tie again.
Cost: Now some people think it's wrong for M$ to charge people $50 bucks a year for their service. (anti-Xbox folks) And others think you shouldn't have to pay for an addon to game online with the PS2. (Xbots) I think they're about the same myself. It seems like XBL is priced for the people who want to game online every night while PS2 is for gamers who can pick up a game every now and then if they feel so inclined and not feel ripped off. So cost doesn't sway me either way either.
If I had the money and time I'd get 'em both and have fun playing instead of worrying about weather or not somone I don't even know is having more fun on a different system.

Hey, a good post :) But let's keep your posts a little more controversial. It's system war.....
But, in the end, I am pretty sure I wouldn't pick either. The fight genre is the only thing I would care about for online gaming. So far, none of them have done a good job. I heard CvS2 on DC was not that bad in Japan, but again, that is Japan. XBL's main attraction is FPS, but if I want to play a good FPS, I would just stick with something like half life: natural selection, you know?

Maybe what you say doesn't matter to them because they couldn't disagree with you more!
I'm just saying that having to shell out $4.17 a month to partake in some fun and games with other people from around the globe is a mere drop in the bucket!
You get what you pay for folken and with XBL it appears people get quite a bit. For nothing with the PS2 plan you get pretty limited action with very few games...virtually nothing for nothing. Oh, and since when is Sony's ability to get gamers on the intenet and play other gamers free anyway? Last time I checked one doesn't need to buy any extra's to get online with the Xbox.
Remember folken...I support SONY too! I just think your opinion isn't shared by many in the gaming world.

Xbots always have beef with PS2&GC fans. I am not the only one they disagree with. I could careless of what they think when it comes to certain subjects.
I didn't flame you. I only explained to you what my logic was for saying PS2 online is better. It is better for me because it is practically free. Not to mention, most of online games on PC with the exception of RPGs are free. Why should MS charge people for anything? That, I would really like to know.
Yes, you don't need to buy anything extra because the modem is already included in the price of xbox when you buy one. It is like what Shafted once said, why don't you give me 200 dollars and I'll give you a free xbox? It's the same logic. Furthermore, modem for ps2 is 39.99 and you don't need to renew any "membership" fee so you can use it again next year.

The "Wars" rage on...I'm just glad the games do too! I still say owning both PS2 and Xbox is the only way to go. I couldn't imagine gaming without having the ability to game with the best of both consoles...and there's a lot of the "best!" I don't do any online gaming at present...except maybe a little PC "cribbage" or "spades" but as far as my consoles...none.
I'm trying to finish FFX as we speak. I actually beat Yunalesca last year but put the game aside after that and never finished. I managed to overwrite the save to so I started over a few weeks ago. I'm like 80hrs in and hope to be done within the week. FFX2 is already pre-ordered and I just picked up Top Spin and PoP for Xbox. See...gotta have BOTH!

All you can complain about is the monthly fees of Live.I see the picture clear now.To avoid comparing the lackluster online games on the PS2 to the superior online games of Live on the Xbox you hide behind the montly fee issue.I see now. Thanks for clearly this up Folken.
