Yesterday when i was trying to get into a Gears match, I tried for the first time to play online. I wasn't able to do so by connecting through a wireless deal, but then I connected to my regular old modem and it worked fine. Why would there be an issue with this? I ran a speed test using my computer and all that was up to speed compared to when i was just connected with a wired connection. But when I tried to connect my PS3 onto the wireless it would give me a message on the lines of -certain functions may not work properly due to internet connectivity- or something like that. The interwebs works fine with wireless, but not on my systems. Help?

I've had the same problem CK and as a result have opted for hard wiring over wireless. For the XBOX 360 specifically, I've noticed that when connecting wirelessly it automatically puts me in a NAT 2 setting and gives the applicable spiel that you mentioned (paraphrasing- you can connect but certain capabilities including voice may not function properly). NAT 2 is the best setting you can achieve connecting via a router (wireless or not). NAT 1 can only be achieved with a direct connection to the modem which is what I do as it works most optimally.
PS3 seems stronger in this regard (NAT 2 works just fine) with the exception of COD4 which has been buggy at any of the higher NAT settings.
If it's not too much trouble, I'd suggest you stay hard wired in order to optimize your online gaming experience.

Thanks, Five. It won't be a problem for me to stay wired, but the whole reason i was going wireless is because my brother is now living with me(his hoouse burnt down), and has to be able to do a bunch of work(he's a cop) oon his laptop. I mainly game online in the evenings, so it won't affect him much, but if I ever want to play during the day it could cause problems.

When you go wired do you use a router or connect the modem directly to the console? Signal quality degrades the more length there is between the device and the connection, and wireless by default is less stable than wired.
It's not a big deal for normal use but for connections that require low latency (like gaming) it could matter a lot.

I connect directly to the modem when I'm wired. Before, I tried it connecting to the router, and that's when I got errors, and with the PS3, well, I tried the wirless and it worked for DLing stuff and browsing the webs, but it gave me the message that Five mentioned, about headset and other problems when i would jump on to LBP. Never got those errors connecting to the modem directly.

LBP is the first PS3 game to display that error. To me it's like one of those seizure warnings that games include. You're unlikely to have a seizure but just in case.....

I've always been asked about going wireless (Wii, PS3, laptop all wi-fi capable), but I figured as long as I could tolerate a couple of wires, I would be better off without it. Plus, I would have to pay extra for the wireless thing for the 360, and I don't play online enough to warrant that purchase.

I don't what the deal is i'm wondering is it your isp. I used to have similar issues until I switched and now I have a networking specific plan.
Things should work without having to go that route but these consoles seem funny .
