I have been noticing that a lot of the recent online games have been made available on the PS2 only! Hmmmmm, The Xbox has full online capabilities aswell...so what's the deal here?
We all know how "Xbox Live" works right? One central server hosted by 'ol Billy's Micro$oft...yep! It doesn't matter what game you buy, whether it be from "Id software" or "UBI soft" etc. All games are played through the same server!
Sony's PS2 however has an open ended online gaming approach, for example if you buy a Capcom game then Capcom's servers will host your session or if you buy a Neversoft game like T.H.U.G you play online through Neversoft's servers....and so on!
I have heard that the companies prefer it this way, If this is the case I think this could spell trouble for the LIve side of XBOX!

 .................................

FYI, not all Xbox LIVE games even use servers, many of games a particular user must host. The only function of the M$ servers in these cases are so that you can locate your "friends", a very useful function. The M$ servers are also used in the new XSN, a nice feature if you are into sports games. Another function of these servers is to crack down on cheaters. Yes there will always be someone trying to cheat, but with the reporting ability and one gamer tag feature, it makes it somewhat easier to track them down. Does PS2 have these capabilities online? I dont use it, so I dont know, but I dont think it does.

the only games PS2 online has on Xbox LIVE are sports titles and "me to" titles. 90% of online games have either a horrible interface or problems otherwise.

right, right...'cuz God know's nobody wants to Play Tony Hawk and SSX online.

XBox Live is easily the superior service IMO, but the games availible aren't much more than cheap knock-offs of what you can get on PC....mostly because they lack the fan mods and levels that made the online experince so much more lasting and appealing in the first place.

That's one thing I really think XBox has dropped the ball on..the ability for gamers to customize their online experince. Yes it's cool to play with people from around the world, but it's nothing new. You're just playing the same game with really good AI. (that of a person) The game itself doesn't change, and it doesn't let gamers show off their creativity and give themselves a true online persona.

Compare that to the PC, where mods can make a game play like new and extend its life indefinately. Take something like Half Life and Counterstrike for instance, which lived off of mods to grow and evolve long after it should have been obsolete. Had Counterstrike debuted on XBox Live, it would probably been little more than a flash in the pan, instead of the global phenomenon it became. After all, aside from a few bones MS might have thrown in terms of extra levels and such, the game would not have changed much at all. While PS2 obviously lags behind PC in this regard, games like THUG, where you can bring your customized skater and parks online gives the game infinitely more replay value than simply substituting real people for AI.

Aside from that, PS2 is doing a better job of bringing new online experinces to the console gamer. Instead of the upteenth fps, or racing game, we see games like Front Mission, THPS, Armored Core and Resident Evil. Seeing as XBox Live is the only service that requires me to pay for it, It better do somthing different with online like PS2, or do traditional online better than PC...so far it does neither. Score one for PS2.

Hey guys don't get the wrong idea!
I personally think the Xbox has the best online options as well...it is superior to PS2's online sevice in many ways. I love the idea of being able to voice chat directly with others, Xbox makes it even easier than using the "Sidewinder" (remember that?) for the PC! Xbox has the friend locator...kinda works like Gamespy arcade, Awsome!
Finally!..... this is Micro$oft, they know everything about online and online gaming and they have the cash to improve it even further.

However the last post I made about these companies prefering the PS2 over Xbox for online gaming is just what I have been reading about in magazines and on the web!
Could this be bad news for Micro$oft??? Time will tell!

yea, PS2 can keep SLOWCOM, THUG, and EA, I'd rather be playing Counter-Strike(not 3rd person CS clone), Return to Castle Wolfenstien, Rainbow Six 3, Cromson Skies(NOTHING on PS2 comes close to this one!), Unreal, or Sega sports games(and XSN which is better than Sony 1st party sports 989).

PS2's online library is lame.

I think M$ really need to expand the gaming experiences on Live. From what I have gathered from my limited time with Live at friends homes, the set up is great. Real-time voice chat with a headset is great. But I get bored playin the same maps in the same FPS format over and over and not being a big fan of racers (online or otherwise) I find myself in conflict over Live.

I really do want to play games like Crimson Skies and Rainbow 6, but the most notable genre missing from Live is the MMORPG. If M$ really wants to hook gamers and get people paying for it year after year, they need to bring in games that make people play in more then sporadic bursts.

Sony may be getting more online games from 3rd parties but online these games suck. We have 16 person dogfight on live while EA gives sony 2 player online Lord of the Rings and then reccommends BB for that. 2 player only for SSX as well and four player only for the new MOH game. IF this is what Xbox live is missing thank you billy.

But Activision has exposed a hole in the MS online plan and that's for MS reluctuance to allow user controlled content over live like what's being done in thug but outside that I still think MS is way in front with Xbox live than Sony is with PS2 online.

The EA Nation commericial is sweet though.

What do you call games like Top Spin, the upcoming Tenchu:Online,True Fantasy Online,MechAssault,DOA:Online,Steel Battalion:Online,Splinter Cell:Pandora Tomorrow with online play, and numerous sports titles as well.I think its safe to say that the Xbox has just as much if not more to bring to the online table than the PS2 does Shogun.
