..........playing, watching, and/or listening to?

Playing

Besides the games listed on and under the 360 gamertag, I've been dabbing in:

Devil May Cry 4 (PS3) - Finally got to Dante on this version.
Folklore (PS3) - Can I consistently play this game?
Uncharted (PS3) - Trophies. Hooray?
Burnout Paradise (PS3) - No Davis update until Sept :(
NHL 07 (360) - This one shows up on the 360 gamertag, but I wanted to mention it because it's the first time I've played more than two games in a hockey game since NHL 94.

Listening to

Coldplay: Viva La Vida - This is the first CD of theirs I have bought. Sounds good overall.
Jordin Sparks - Great singing voice, and for her age, her songs do not sound like a youngster wrote them. She probably didn't, which worked out great.
Local Sports Talk Radio - It's been either the Brett Favre saga or the Steve Smith sucker punch (especially since it's local) this week. Hopefully, they'll talk about actual football soon.

Watching

Big Brother 10 - The only show I consistently watched after the writer's strike.
24: Season 4 on DVD - The best series on tv, and the best season of the series, IMO.
Friday Night Lights: Season 1 on DVD - Very underrated show. One of my top 5.

Games:
Still heavily playing Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire. . . it's the #1 gaming time hog right now.

Am addicted to PSN games, currently hooked on Pixel Junk Eden. It's not perfect, I'd give it a 4/5.

Still have GTA IV gathering dust. Am probably going to purcahse Uncharted and play it again.

Music:

Just got a new CD yesterday "Morelenbaum/Sakamoto: Casa." I like Ryuchi Sakamoto, mostly known for his film scores, but I ran across this colloboration, its vocal jazz with a singer, I think she's Brazillian. This album is fantastic.

Oher than that, I just listen to everything, Mogwai has been on heavy rotation.

Television
Nothing. Absolutely nothing. I just finished watching the first three seasons of Weeds (I don't have showtime, so rented them.) But HBO has run out of good content; I used to watch Deadwood, Six Feet Under. I enjoyed the John Adams Miniseries. I still watch new episodes of South Park and Simpsons and Family Guy, but all those shows are in decline except Family Guy.

Reading

Am currently re-reading Robertson Davies "The Deptford Trilogy." Sometimes I feel like the only non-canadian to have read this guys stuff. Really meaty, extremely intellectual yet filled with life and juicy, gossipy drama.

On the low-brow end of things, I gave a stab at some more recent Stephen King releases (I've hated several of his books in the last 10 years or so) but Lisey's Story was pretty good, and Blaze--put out as a "lost" Bachman book"--was also a light, fun diversion.

PLAYING - I just got GRAW 2 again, so i'll be starting that one up shortly, especially since the newest OXM has all the map packs for free(!).

Geometry Wars Evolved 2 - Much funner that the original. The new game modes are a blast and very challenging, and there is still a regular old version like in GWE.

Elefunk - started out hard, and has stayed hard throughout the levels I've completed. Very fun bridge game. Never played anything like it.

I also recently started a new game of Otogi 2, since I had tried a while back to jump right in and fight the Nine-Tailed Fox. He kicked my ass to no end, so i figure I better start new and redevelop my sKills.

Listening - I just got Transatlanticism(?) from Death Cab for Cutie. It rules. I think they have a new one coming out soon, or is already out.

The Dillinger escape Plan - It rocks. I re-acquired The EP that has Patton on it, plus my buddy kicked me down with a bunch a random tracks. Milk Lizard rocks.

Also hearing Hella, Meshuggah, old Spineshank, and Cavalera Conspiracy.

Watching - A week ago I bought Futurama: Beast with a Billion Backs. Very odd movie, if you ask me. Kind of repulsive, like the episode when Bender becomes human.

Also always watching the Youtube and Newgrounds.

Season One of Code Monkeys comes out soon on DVD. I'll pick that up.

Mass Effect I'm going into the final section of that. Loving it don't know why I stopped.

Ranbow 6/ Halo 3 when us VGR types get together. Next week probably thursday or Friday it'll be Madden

Also dabbling in SSHD

Watching nothing on TV right now can't wait for the next season of Heroes and for them to come back and finish Battlestar Galactica. I've seen more movies in the theater this summer than ever before.

Listening too.

Skillz I know this cat personally. Man he's style got the Rhyme skillz but he tried to go pop I think this is only his second studio release in a 10+ year career plus he's in his mid 30's so it's kind of weird.

Still Bumping Kanye's last album

I'm heavy into the Mix tape scene as well.

Besides that I listening to a lot of local hip hop,

Games:
Too many to list on the 360; look at the GamerCard in my signature to see what I'm playing on the system.

I got hooked back up to the internet about a month ago, which was important for me to get back to enjoying Xbox Live. But I had forgotten that my NDS and PSP are also online enabled machines... so I've found a reason to fire those systems up again. Particularly the DS. Been doing the weekly puzzles on Professor Layton and the Curious Village, and trying to get new high scores on all the games in TouchMaster so that I can post them to the leaderboards.

Just finished Ogre Battle 64 (for the ninth time) today. (Finally!) That ought to do it for this year. Now I need to knuckle up and start finishing some other games. I was supposed to get back to GTA IV and Mass Effect, but the Too Human and Mercenaries 2 releases are imminent and I swore a long time ago that I would "finish" Eternal Darkness and Mercenaries before they came out. So I need to get crackin'! And there'll be no rest for me after that, because I've got a similar situation with Fable II and Fallout 3 - which will be arriving in October - where I swore that I'd have Fable and Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel finished beforehand. So starting today I become the purpose-driven gamer.

Music:
Well it's summer, and I'm listening to what I listen to every summer: Earth, Wind, & Fire (Raise; Greatest Hits); Chicago (Group Portrait); Coverdale/Page; Moev (Head Down)... and some others that I can't quite remember right now. (Damn, I need to get off of here and get back to gaming.)

DVD:
I've been renting a movie or two every weekend since moving in here. That might have to stop. Why? See above.

But I won't stop watching Planet Earth. I pretty much just started watching it, and have only been watching one episode a weekend, but dayum is this an awesome DVD! I can tell you already, it's not just one of the greatest DVD's (well, HD-DVD actually) I've ever bought, it's one of the greatest purchases I've made but period. This DVD box set gets the highest recommendation from me; everybody should see it!

Say, this is a pretty damn good game. I'm still probably not even 25% thru it yet, but I have gotten past the point where I'd stopped before and I'm digging it.

The game isn't without it's flaws tho'. And the things that I have a problem with now are the exact same things that I had a problem with before. Namely, issues with the combat, and the menu system.

As I mentioned in the previous post, I wanted to play thru this game to help me make a decision on Too Human. Too Human is an action-rpg, a genre to which combat and menu systems are crucial elements. And if a developer can't get those things right...

Turns out however that I let the Too Human demo decide the fate of Too Human the game for me, and not the developers previous work. I played the demo again last night and have decided NOT to get it. Reasons? I HATE the combat. And the menu system is cumbersome.

Rulings against Too Human out of the way, I am still glad that I have given Eternal Darkness a second chance. For as much as I dislike the combat - particularly the targeting system and collision detection - at least it's a familiar system, and not some stupid "innovation" ...so I can at least play it. Hopefully the enemies don't ramp up in difficulty too much as I progress, and I'm able to finish it.

Cuddly Knife
08-11-2008, 06:01 PM
The enemies don't ramp up at all throughout the whole game, except for a boss battle or two. Wait, there is an annoying guy or two later on, but nothing that isn't impossible, or even difficult. I actually liked the weapon combat, how you can slice arms and stuff to get a leg up(no pun), on the goons. I hardly ever went insane. Hell, I had to let some enemies get to me so I could see some of the awesome insanity trips.

BTW, how far are you? One thing I noticed about this game is that the graphics appeared to get better the further along you went. What's been you favorite level? Mine was Pious' opening level, and The War to End All Wars, and the final level. Oh, and Max Roivas level.

Also, I love the soundtrack. One of the best in gaming.

Rogue Bounty Hunter

Eternal Darkness didn't impress me. I liked the fact that it controlled better than Resident Evil, but there was nothing about it that I found interesting. It didn't help that websites like IGN kept urging people to buy the game because they were supposedly missing out, or whatever. Overhype like that tend to lessen my already low interest in some games.

I guess if I went by Silicon Knights past work, I would probably pass on Too Human. Besides ED, I thought the MGS: Twin Snakes was a waste of development time. It was solid, but I didn't think the game was that old to get a remake. I would have rather Konami asked SK to make one (or both) of the Metal Gear games instead.

-

Updating my Games list, I'm only playing Uncharted and NHL 07 from the list. I thought about finishing Fable: The Lost Chapters, as well as finish Jade Empire for the 2nd time. I may just stick with Jade to go along with Madden, Bionic Commando Rearmed and Fable's Pub Games (last two will be available Wednesday). I've been struggling trying to find a primary non-sports game to play for the past couple of weeks.

Playing nothing at the moment, but I was doing some heavy Disgaea on the PSP while I was in Bahrain. I love this game, it's got a fantastic cast of characters and hilarious story. The mechanics are pretty addictive too.

Watching the Olympics at the moment. What else would I watch? Surprisingly entertaining.

I'm not listening to much of anything either, but this one J-pop song has gotten stuck in my head and I can't get it out. It's hilariously called "Do Me More", but is surprisingly good.

Right now I'm really just playing Monster Hunter 2 Freedom. I literally dropped everything else and just put hours into this game. I just checked my game hours count and I'm like 280 hours into the game. I mean WTF happened to me? I used to have ADD. Now I don't count anymore.

In other news, I am listening to:

Music
Macross Frontier stuff (basically by May'N, Nakajima Ai and Yoko Kanno) -- this new girl Ai is really good her voice is excellent
House Sessions - house compilation with stuff from various artists
Kampengrooves 2 - another chillout album with stuff from Brazilian and Japanese artists. The album title sounds German though, go figure.

Watching:
Macross Frontier - yeah more singing, love triangles and space opera mecha fights
Code Geass R2 - The United States of Japan is trying to overturn the Britannian Empire
Antique Bakery - show about 3 guys and a *** running a patisserie shop. Yes, wtf
Natsume's Book of Friends - about a guy who can see spirits and inherited a book of his grandmother's where she placed the names of all the demons she beat up
Yakshuji Ryoko's case files - evil saucy woman drives her slaves to solve police cases for her

I better just list the stuff I watched today, or else I'll be here until tomorrow talking about ita ll.

I also just finished watching Wall E, Forbidden Kingdom and Wanted. Wanted was a lot of fun and a great ride. Action movies haven't been as fun as this lately. Wall E, well as stupid as a love story between 2 robots sounds, this was actually a pretty good movie, with a few plotholes but I enjoyed it nonetheless

Wii: Fire Emblem - Radiant Dawn. I have been trailing off on Mario Kart as of late.
DS: Civilization Revolutions, which is awesome and addictive. Feeling guilty about not finishing Etrian Odyssey still.

Music
Just discovered Level 42, which is an 80's band, but has a lot of new live stuff on Youtube. Mark King is an absolute bass phenom. Some of their tunes are so-so, but mainly listen for the awesome bass playing.

Also still heavily into Zappa Plays Zappa.

Watching
Just saw Futurama: Beast With A Billion Backs a few days ago. I enjoyed it, but I long for the days when Futurama was still a real TV show.

Realized that Venture Bros. on Adult Swim is one of my favorite shows. Other then that, haven't been watching too much tv.

Reading
Been digging on Secret Invasion.

- Blood Omen: The Legacy of Kain... Think Zelda but with vampires, kinda.
- Dragon Warrior 8, but gave up due to F*^&ING random encounters
- Guitar Hero, freshing up my skills to prepare for Thriller, Rebel Yell, and Mr. Crowley in the next installment!!! Randy Rhodes is a god.

Music

- Die Form- Duality... The single strangest, amazing cd I've ever listened to. youtube The Hidden Cage. Not safe for work though.
- Sister Machine Gun- Burn... Amazing. Lounge industrial, I mean, how cool is that!?
- Depeche Mode- Violator... no comment needed here.
- Sisters of Mercy- First and Last and Always... a pillar of darkwave music
- Cannibal Whore Feast- Sex Cowboys- kinda sucks, but the name is amazing.
- Clan of Xymox- Medusa... Another classic of the darkwave genre
- Killing Joke- Night Time... One of my personal favs. Also seem to go back to this one.

Movies/TV

- Step Brothers... Pretty funny.
- Ravenous... Cannabilism is cool.
- Big Trouble in Little China... If you have not seen this, do so asap
- The unintentional humor and hypocrisy of American politics

Reading

- Reasonable Faith by William Lane Craig... Very deep and hard to understand some of his arguments. But very interesting and makes me consider things I never really thought of before.
- The Savage Nation by Micheal Savage... This guy kills me. Youtube him and you will either laugh you a$$ of or get extremely offended. Good fun.

I always think of you when I look over at my movie connection and see Ravenous. It's just funny to me to find somebody else who liked that movie. Then again, you don't just like it  ... and that kills me.

The first time I saw Ravenous I was super drunk and only caught the last half, but wasn't really paying attention cause it was on at a party. However, the music got stuck in my head and it seduced me into buying the movie later on. Loved the dark humor in the movie, though a lot of people I watch it with don't really get it. Oh well, to each his own.

Wow, really catching up on oldschool goth, eh? That list looks like it needs Alien Sex Fiend on it!

I got some box set recently has those bands on it, Xymox, Sisters of Mercy, Killing Joke, etc. The box sleave is designed like a mock corset, and its a really good collection. . . especially since I've long lost all that music that was on vinyl and casette and never replaced it on CD.

The closest I've been listening to in that genre lately is Blue Glove, the one-off side project of Banshees Steve Severin and Robert Smith of the Cure. It's the 2-disc re-issue, and the second disk is alternate versions of the songs, and Robert Smith does the ALL the vocal tracks (the original album he only sings on 2 tracks, and Severin's girlfriend sang the rest of the tracks.) It's a pretty awesome album, and you'd love it if you don't already have it. The 2-disc reissue has some left over studio stuff that was never released.

The liner notes were interesting, because I didn't realize that original Robert was supposed to sing on all the tracks, but his record company forbade it because they were afraid he was going to stop doing Cure records. So all the vocal demos on disk 2 were recorded way back then (early 80's), it's not like they re-recorded the songs with his vocals just for the re-issue. They've existed all this time and we just didn't get to hear them until this re-issue.

Level 42 is a great band and I'm glad you discoverd them Trebor.

For some reason I find myself really enjoying 80's music especially the earlier part of that decade. Strangely I didn't like that music when it was new and fresh favoring bands like Kiss, Quiet Riot, and Ozzy instead (more hard rock stuff). But now-a-days I'm digging on all the 80's tunes I thought sucked back in the day. Funny how things work out sometimes.

My current faves from the 80's vault-
The Church - Under the Milky Way
Big Country - In a Big Country

Trebor, when you say Moe, are you talking about Moe! as in Moe Staiano, the Bay Area percussionist genius/ experimental composer who sometimes plays with Sleepy time Gorilla Museum? Or is there another performer or group of performers going by "Moe." (his moniker is "Moe!" with the exclamation point.)

Oh, and Cuddly, thanks for the CD's. I'm working my way through them. Love the Chill CD. Also, this was my first listen of Dream Theater, and it sounded like if Rush had Joe Satriani as its guitarist. Interesting stuff. I especially like the Mars Volta stuff, another band I'd heard of but never heard.

Finally, there was something called Pulsar Bleu. What's the story behind that? I liked it a lot. As soon as I figure out why my computer is screwed, I can't wait to put together some mix CD's for you. It may include some things you've already heard or maybe own, but a lot probably not. I've got lots of ideas, and I especially what to introduce you to some of the musicians that influenced those recordings of my own that I sent you like "Charon Transit Authority". . . the really creepy one I recorded. Stuff like Merzbow and Nurse With Wound. Have you heard much Mevlins stuff record in the last 5 years or so? Ever heard a band called "!!!" (pronounced chk chk chk.)? Their like dark disco, and the recent album even has strange elements of film music added to the dark disco funk thing they've got going on.

Any Mr. Bungle? I guess that was a stupid question, you're a patton fan, right, and have all his stuff? Fantomas? Tomahawk? Peeping Tom? Patton/Kaada? Or how about some of the Zorn collaborations, like the really mellow and listenable (a rare thing for Zorn) jazz album "The Gift"?

Argh. I can't wait to start recording some stuff for you.

Ever had a CD that you can hear anytime? When you're happy, when you're sad, when you're high/sober, and when you don't want to listen to anything, but you can always put in that CD and everything's well in the moment? This is that CD, for me. Below is his website.

I recently started listening to a little bit of Darkwave/Rave music, and while most of it is too cheesed for my tastes, there is some really good stuff. I tend to lean on artists that break out of their genre and bring other styles to the mix, not destroying the barriers of their respective genres, but expanding them. You sent me two Melvins CDs last time, The Bootlicker and Crybaby, both excellent tunage. i guess that's older than five years, so any newer stuff would be very welcome.

Let's see, you gave me Patton/Kaada, but no Zorn. And I have Peeping Tom, the first two Tomahawks, and I think all of Fantomas. I have Disco Volante and California from Bungle, but not their first one(?).

It's all good.

Which Dream Theater CD did you listen to? I gave him Scenes from A Memory, which, IMO, is the best DT cd. I thought about making him a mix of tunes from all CDs, since I have all from Images and Words to Systematic Chaos, but that would fit only about six songs, as my faves are usually the ones that are 8min+. Especially since I would've had to put in A Change of Seasons, Learning to Live, Metropolis pt. 1, decisions, decisions. You a fan, Trebs? What's your fave DT?

Rogue Wave

and a TON more smaller bands. Have weed, have flask. And weed is basically legal here, so there's no stress about cops and security at all. AHHHHHSOME!!!!!

Scenes From A Memory is a fantastic album, probably my second favorite DT disc. Something about disc 1 of Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence always gets me, though. Disc 2 of that album, not so much.

I got heavily into DT about 2-3 years ago, though their newer albums are a bit of a letdown. Though Systematic Chaos is better then Octivarium.

Favor. Can any of you music fans click the link in my post below and let me know if any of the bands playing Sunday you can recommend? I'll be seeing Wilco for sure, but a lot of the smaller bands that day, haven't picked what we're seeing sunday yet. If you know any of them and have a thumbs up to recommend let me know.

Ooh, Wilco is awesome especially since adding Nils on lead guitar. You'll enjoy them for sure.

On the first day you can see the Black Keys. They're a great new band playing more bluesy style rock. Original yet old school.

I'm a fan of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, but with no Flecktones name, i'm guessing he's gone solo. Either way, I recommend him for a great alternative to all the rock. Anyone ever heard of Victor Wooten? He's a monster slap/pop player on the bass, and he played with BF & FT.

And of course, Primus is the sweetness.

I've heard of him. He's well respected in the musician community and obviously an amazing bass player.

Holy crap is Primus ever freaking awesome. And I think they were really enjoying playing in Golden Gate Park. Les was saying it was the first time they'd played there as band, but that he'd played there when he was a young skater, playing upright bass with no audience (Primus is a local band). I've never seen bass playing like Les Claypool; have heard it, and always thought my ears were playing tricks on me. To see how he actually plays that thing, just wow.

I think Bela Fleck is today, and was going to try and see it. Just depends on if it doesn't interfere with something I want to see more. Wanted to see Drive By Truckers too; a lot of guys here have recommended that before. What was that one guys name who used to post here, had the avatar of Satan suckling on a breast?

One more day to go and am already so fried!

What was that one guys name from New Jersey who used to post here, had the avatar of Satan suckling on a breast? He was always pestering me to go see Drive By Truckers, so finally am going to. I just barely missed seeing them last year at the Hardly Strictly Blue Grass festival* --an annual event here in October.

Last night the fog rolled in so thick, and the light shows were playing out against the eucalyptus trees, but filtered through the fog, it made even Tom Petty's set awesome. So many colored lights blasting through the fog and lighting up the trees.

Met someone from Memphis who had also lived where I lived for awhile in Northwest Arkansas, and got to turn them on to some really awesome purple bud I got for the show, and that was fun because the weed here is light years better than what you can find there. He had a cool video of himself feeding a squirrel at the show; the squirrels here are not normally friendly enough to eat directly out of your hand, but he was making weird squirrel noises, and got the thing to come right up to him.

I'm rambling, there was a ton of strange sights and sounds yesterday; and today may be the coolest yet; I don't care that I've seen Wilco a bunch of times, I can't think of better music for Golden Gate Park than some of the tunes off their recent album; I really hope they play the first track off the most recent album.

God, I never want to go back to my job again. Sometimes it looks appealing to be a dirty hippy selling beads or spaghetti in the parking lot, following bands around, but then I remember I've aged into some Gobi-berry eating money grubbing yuppie, and there's something to be said for limiting your punk-self to special events.

*(Hardly Strictly Bluegrass the biggest music event of the year here, 300,000 people, 5 stages, 50 bands in October 3-5, free because its paid for by a local billionaire blue grass fan--this year just a few of the musicians: Emmylou Harris, Gogol Bordello, Elvis Costello, Robert Plant w/ Allyson Kraus, Ricky Skaggs, Micky Hart's drum project, Steve Earl, Marty-Wilson Piper of the Church.. .and I don't know most of the rest of the bands because I don't follow blue-grass, but this show every years is the best. I usually just pick a stage and set up a blanket, bring a ton of food, wine, weed and just chill to awesome music in the worlds most beautiful park. You should drive up Cuddly; I met someone from New Mexico yesterday who drove up for the Outside Lands Festival this weekend. It's not THAT far! I've got a comfy couch. VGR music fans always have a place to crash in SF.)

Hmmmm, i might someday take you up on that offer, Gaddy. my brother when he was in the Navy used to travel from Silver City to San Diego, and he said that took him under 10 hours, and i love driving far places. How far is it from SD to SF?

And the guys name is Prince of Darkness. I always thought that him and The Masked Gamer were the same dude.

Robert Plant? Isn't he the singer of Zep? I didn't know he was blue-grass. I do like Skaggs, and Costello.

Dude, that's my dream, but it will never be realized because i'm too into materialistic things that I can't seem to live without, like games, HDTV, fast-food, a home, and other stuff that really isn't necessary. Actually, my dream is to be able to live in the Gila Wilderness. Just me and my animals and trees. And some excellent homegrown chronic.

Yeah, Robert Plant is Zep's singer. The important thing to remember in the festival title is "Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival." There's a lot of Bluegrass, but a lot of stuff also that just sounds sorta rootsy but isn't bluegrass. Like Elvis Costello. And last year the Mekons and the Drive By Truckers were there.

TMG and PoD weren't the same guy I don't think. PoD also was into Death Cab for Cutie, and TMG has never given any indication he had shoe-gazer inclinations.

I think San diego to SF is 8-9 hours.
