I just reinstalled Civ 4 and the Warlords expansion after being really interested in Civilization Revolutions, and holy moley crap this game is ridiculously awesome! I never really enjoyed Civ. I played Civ 3 for all of 5 mins and uninstalled it. I played Civ 4 when it first came out for a few days and then uninstalled it. I do recall enjoying it for those few days, but I always thought it was inferior to the Total War series, especially with its roll-based combat system.

However, after installing it yesterday I've put about 6 hours into the game: 2 yesterday and a ridiculous 4-hour stretch today that I didn't see coming. This game has the best "one more turn" syndrome EVER since the turns are so short and time flies by really fast in the early stages, so you expect the game to be over quickly. But as you hit 1000 AD every turn starts taking up a smaller number of years and you can start to really enjoy the Classical and Medieval eras with all the new technologies of those times.

I also think this game has a lot more replayability than the Total War games because you can create different maps/sizes, and there are several campaigns you can try, not to mention downloading campaigns created by online users. Another advantage it has over Total War is the amount of technology research you can do is ridiculous, since in Total War the different technologies come at preset times.

Overall though I still think Total War is the better strategy title, mainly due to the tactical combat and the different units for each civilization (in Civ each nation has only one special unit). I do have to say though that Civ 4 completely took me by surprise and is an amazing game for anyone who enjoys 4X games with depth (although not too much depth like those space 4X games...those are just crazy).

Someday I'll get it. I have Civ 3 Complete installed now and it really is a good civ game. There are pros and cons to both 3 and 4, but 4 is more popular I know.

Yeah the game has surprising depth. The first time I played it I didn't like it because I thought the combat system was lame, but there's a lot of thought that goes into it. Pretty crazy stuff. I'm close to a Conquest (or was it Domination) victory on my first game, so things are going well. I'm gonna have to crank up the difficulty level when I'm done to get more of a challenge.
