from magicbox:

BusinessWire reported that the market share of Nintendo's GameCube has increased from 19% to 37% in US, after the price drop to $99.99. Right now GameCube is the number 2 console in the market, and Sony PlayStation 2 is still ahead of the two other systems.

And PsTwo?

Sony has registered a new trademark PStwo in Japan, which seems to be an indication for an economical version of PS2, just like PSone

If that's true I wouldn't expect to see it for another year at least.

This news is from a Nintendo press release

http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/031104/45137_1.html

Their claim of being in second place in the U.S. is highly questionable at best.

Edit: looking at this qoute again

"The system now runs a strong second in the U.S. market as it challenges for leadership during the important holiday sales season."

I am guessing that they meant that they were in second place for the month cause there is no way they would be challenging Sony for the overall lead anytime soon.

Ah! you better say hi to me! I know who you are. I just got back from the Philippines, but I couldn't afford to jump over to Thailand during my trip.

It is questionable since the sentence isn't written in a way that makes it clear. But from 19% to 37% U.S. marketshare is pretty straightforward.

I would guess that the GCN is number 2 in worldwide sales, but 3 in the U.S.

The North American and Japanese market's don't matter anyway. What's important is that xbox is still outselling the GC on Mars.

No, no, no - Mars doesn't count. North American and Japan don't count, true, but Europe doesn't count either.

Nothing counts.

There's a little town called Bumfuuk Iowa . That's the only demographic that REALLY counts.

What were you doing in the Philippines? It has never been one of my favorite countries to visit. I was there last month for a meeting with San Miguel Corporation.

I still think that 37% market share for the month seems a little high. That would leave a rather small market share for Xbox.

This news is just Nintendo trying to make themselves look better. They held 37% of the console sales during whatever period they are talking about-most likely October as Slade said. It's not only far-fetched, but it's damn-near impossible that Nintendo could surpass Xbox's 1 million + lead over Gamecube within one month. September's sales figures from NPD showed the 1 million + lead that Xbox holds over the Gamecube.

Like I said, Nintendo is just trying to make themselves look better. Watching Nintendo and Microsoft bicker about sales numbers is hilarious. It's like being at school when the bully isn't around and the two fat kids start calling each other fat. No offense to fat kids mind you.

I sponsor a child there and she's sick with a kidney disease. I thought she wasn't gonna make it, so I went to see her. She's fine tho, considering. She looked good and she's responding to treatment and I had a nice time, considering. And no, it's not high on my vacation list either. Manila's the hardest city I've ever been to and the traffic, shockingly is worse than Bangkok.

And yeah I would like to see an independent company crunch the numbers. I picked up a Cube recently used for $84 and got a handful of AAA titles. So I'm happy with it as a second system, just wish it had some more RPGs.

Wow, a humanitarian. It's hard to find someone who cares about the welfare of others these days. These kids living in third world countries only need a very little amount of money to get by. I just wish there were more people like you helping out. Sometimes it seems like these kids come into the world and are not even given a chance to survive.

Back to gaming. The only reason I have the Cube is for the Nintendo games. It's got more than enough AAA games to keep most people occupied for quite a while. It's the perfect secondary system. As a primary system, it's missing quite a few of the top multiplatform games though.

Yeah she lives in the slums in Quezon City and I got to go there. I sorta knew what to expect 'cause it's very similar to when I was in Thailand, but being actually in it was still a shock. I grew up poor in the inner city, but it was nothing like Quezon. That's a different world. And I was surprised how far my money stretched. When the group of us went to eat lunch, for 7 of us it came to $20. Getting around was cheap too. So yeah it's not a lot of money to sponsor her and it helps her and her family out a lot. I highly recommend Children International if anyone's interested. http://www.childreninternational.org

Game Piracy is alive and well. There are some legit stores... I think... but most are pirated and cost less than half of what you'd normally expect to pay. In fact the girl at the counter was nice enough to let me try some games for my GBA and I asked to try LotR Two Towers but when I booted up the cartridge it was Fellowship of the Ring. I'm glad I tried it. I woulda been pissed if I found that out on the plane. I did end up buying Megaman Network Blue which is a pretty good game. In the arcades Vide-OK is the big thing, and I passed. I told my friends the only way I'd do that is if I was drunk.
