My number one demand is:
1.) Focus mainly on gaming, this includes 4 player action, online play etc. Don't get distracted and sidetrack to checking your email or chatting online. What I mean to say is, lets focus the entire budget on creating a console that delivers something above and beyond our expectation.
Look at it this way: would you want a $400 console that has: 128 -bit capacities, checking email, chatting on the web, making toast
OR
A $400 console that has 512 bit of power and focuses all of its capabilities of delivering the best games u ever played
Basically, why not put all of our eggs in one basket and instead of running around with bells and whistles...if I want to surf the web and chat, I could very easily go on the computer or buy a $100 computer (used) to surf
As consumers we forget the whole reason why we grew to love and enjoy videogames.... because of the videogames!
That is my only request (besides with this logic u get more for your money)

Does it bother you that Xbox Next and PS3 will probably BOTH have some sort of tv recording? I think the only solution is different models with different features...one Xbox Next that's pretty much the equivilent of the current Xbox, another that can surf the web, another that can record television.

It doesnt bother me much...i suppose...it just seems so redundant to have tv recording in a videogame console...i mean what are vcr's for? Mircosoft i think is trying to make the all-in-one entertainment machine or something. I hate buying all-in-one crap...i mean sure PS2 can play dvds....therefore making a DVD useless...but can PS2 play VCDs? and other media formats? no...because it doesnt SPEALIZE in that area. we have vcr's for tapes, toasters for toasting, and snowblowers for..u guessed it, snowblowing....or maybe I'm just crazy

I would rather have choice #2. Being able to play DVDs is nice (my PS2 only plays certain ones now :( ), but all of the other things they are considering of putting in the next systems isn't necessary, IMO. Just as I don't use my CPU to play games, I couldn't see myself using my game system to surf the web and check e-mails.

Me either.
Still, if it can be added "for nothing" then why not?
But, if it means adding just one penny to the retail price of the system, then forget it! :p
All I've got to say is that the next systems better be backwards compatible and not come in at a price over $300!
And none of the companies that make them should selling them at a loss! I understand what M$ was trying to do with the XBox, but that'd be unnecessary for the XBox Next. Especially in light of the fact that the XBox is still perfectly viable - and should be for another 3 years!!! I mean, I understand wanting to "raise the roof", but it'd still be nice to be able to "see it", don't you think?
A serious question, for you all though...
... what about the next consoles' controllers?!?
- Does $ony keep the same, old familiar, controller for a third system in a row - or should they attempt some new "innovation"?
- What about Nintendo's toy, er...uh... I mean, controller? Do the kitties really like it that much?!?
- What about M$? Perhaps a controller "M" is in order? (As in "Medium". See... they've got the controller "S" going now, after initially going "Large". Ha ha ha, get it? Ehh... maybe not. :p )

For Sony's next controller: With more and more game using the analog only controls, I wouldn't mind seeing the digital pad and left analog stick change places on their next controller. Also, little indentions on their L1, L2, R1, & R2 buttons wouldn't hurt either. Not the big indentions as the GC controller's L & R buttons, but just a little.
Xbox Controller: Find somewhere to put the black and white buttons where it is easy to access.
Gamecube Controller: Start from scratch. Even though the N64 controller was a weird looking thing, its button layout was far better than the current one for the GC. I definitely do not want to see another GC controller with one big ass button here, one small button to the side of it, two buttons with a different shape here, and a "Z" button that is at a bad place all together. For the face buttons, they need to have a smiliar layout as PS2 and Xbox's controllers. Also, they need a bigger D-pad, and they need more buttons for their controllers. The GC controller has at least 3 less buttons than the others (L3, R3, Select/back) which probably annoys 3rd party devs when porting games over to the system.
That's about all I can think of.

I gotta agree with u there...I cant stand the GC controller..who the heck thought of such a lousy layout? That controller was more like a step backwards in the innovation of controllers...i dont know what they were smoking when they thought of it. Also is that handle to the GC really necessary? I mean how many of us actually walk outside with out GC holding it in that fashion? Infact, how many times do we travel with the console? I wonder if nintendo will bring back that glove controller they had for the nintendo. U wear the glove and it is the controller! Course i never used it, i just think its s a marvelous idea to bring back and even it gets bombed...wearing a controller is cool! lol

Sony would be taking a huge risk if they changed the controller for their next sytem. Although I agree with you, it does need changing - particularly, as you said, the left thumbstick and d-pad. But then again, I never liked it. Any of it. Ohh, but what a "controversy" it (any changes to it) would cause, eh? People are very familiar with, and thus very used to, "the controller".
One of the things that I always hated about the PS controller was the d-pad. In particular those "holes", or gaps, at the "1:30, 3:30, 7:30, and 10:30" (o'clock) positions. There's one game in particular that this lousy d-pad wrecked, and that was "Snafu" (from the Collection of Classic Games from the Intellivision PS1 game)! And that... really ticks me off!
MS's controller S is about perfect, imo. I liked "The Duke" a lot too - especially the size - but the diamond-shape button layout wasn't very smart, was it? The more I play with the "S" the more I come to realize that it is not only (way) better than the "L", but think that it should not be changed - in the least!
The GC controller works great... on a few games. But on most... it is total garbage! Effin' Nintendo and their toys, I swear! That frikkin' "d-pad" is a JOKE!!! (It's obvious that the old N doesn't care about the serious gamers, and our needs, or else they would have given us a stylus to use with it! :o )

For the next Xbox console I say let the next set of controllers remain to be "Control S" controllers. For the PS3 keep the dual shock controllers the same like they were for the PS2.
And for the next Nintendo console I say bring back the N64 controllers. The N64 controller was truly one of the best controllers ever. You had a button for everything,an analog stick,a trigger and the bottom of it, and it fitted right in the palm of your hand. This controller should have been for the GC.The current joystick for the GC sucks IMO.

I'll take the Starship Enterprise-looking controller (N64) over the A-button friendly GC controller anyday. Despite its look, it was really a good controller.

Damn, it looks like I'm the only one who thinks they should keep the style of the current CGN controller. I would change a few things, though. I would make the D-Pad bigger, add an extra set of L and R, and(maybe) add two more buttons near the A,B, Y, and X buttons. Maybe figure out a way to make Z a trigger button again.
For the PS2, I would keep everything the same, except I would like two more shoulder buttons. And maybe make the controller a little bit more thick. Not XBOX thick, though.
I'd also like all game to include pressure sensitivity in their games. Does the XBOX controller have pressure sensitive buttons? I don't remember it having them...

Controllers. . . blech. A few more polygons, some better textures, more lighting effects, all on the same old games. How exciting. We might as well save our bucks and keep playing the systems we've got or buy cheepo systems that are out that we haven't gotten around to playing yet.
We don't need no more steenking controllers! We need neural implants so we can directly interface with the game we are playing! :D

controllers make all the difference in a game
For instance:
In many dreamcast games, a lot of people dislike the controller for the console and during the reviews of the games, 7/10 people would complain about the controls, making the games overall score lower.
Controllers are a big deal. Gameplay and controls work with one another hand in hand. If the controls are just lousy and hard to get used to then the gameplay element of the game is sure to suffer as always.
I believe the makers of the next console should really take some time in developing the controller and almost almost put as much emphasis on the controller as they do with the console's graphics engine.
Personally i enjoy using the playstation and Nintendo64 controllers the most.

4 player action, online support, focus on gaming. Hell, you can get all that right now in XBOX.
I agree with you though, I hope XBOX NEXT doesn't go overboard. I'm not interested in TIVO, web surfing, etc. etc. etc. What I want to see out of XBOX NEXT is more of what I see and like about XBOX. I want them to continue to focus on improving the franchises, the games. Obviously increase the strength of the hardware, but the games are all that matters. We haven't seen the limits of XBOX yet, Full Spectrum Warrior, Halo2, and HalfLife2, along with Doom3 will push the XBOX to its limits. The next consoles, theoretically will have limits that won't be reached for years. So the difference will be the creativity and imagination of the game developers, and the overall support given to the console by its respective creator.
XBOX LIVE will be the key factor for me, I want to see football games and basketball games where each player ON the team is human. Racing games based on Nascar, Indycar, F1 with 20+ human opponents, teams, pitting, etc. Boxing games, war games with persistent wars and objectives. I like what I see coming from Steel Battalion Line of Contact, and I want to see more of that on the next XBOX. So i'm not concerned about the hardware, I don't care about the specs, this time around XBOX killed everyone spec wise, and they use the power. Next time around, everybody is gonna have the power, everybody is gonna have at a minimum what XBOX has now. The difference will be development teams, online infrastructure, and support of the console. I think MS is focused, extremely focused on the success of the XBOX franchise, that has only been and can only continue to be good for the gamer. Even if some of that innovation is "borrowed" by Sony and Nintendo.
