Has anyone here played Sins of a Solar Empire yet? Being a strategy game fan I have been looking at that one for a while but am not sure if it is worth getting.

I hear it isn't as deep as most 4x strategy games, considering it's realtime, and they had to cut some stuff out to compensate. But that said, I played the demo, and thought it was an absolute blast.

Just get the demo. It's just 500 meg, smaller than most demos coming out nowadays. And it lets you play each map for 90 minutes, which should give you more than enough time to see if it's to your taste.

Okay, I will.

Yeah, five hundred megs is not bad at all, considering some of these demos are several gigs now a day.

It's okay. It's basically like Master of Orion 3 done right.

As Renz said it's not as deep as the typical 4x game. Tech Tree is nerfed to RTS levels because it's basically an RTS but overall it's very playable and quite fun. The rest of the mechanics basically are a simplified version of a 4x game but the pace, while sedate, is quite rousing and engaging.

The space battles are a bit like MOO3 in that the ships tend to be a little too small to really see the details (even zoomed in). To make this game really good they should have gone for a more Homeworld-like view as opposed to the MOO3 look.

All in all if you are a strategy fan I say it's a must play. We don't get too many of these kinds of games and this one is more unique than most thanks to its blending of 4x with real time.

I just got through playing the hell out of the demo. Before, I just dabbled with it a bit and thought it was cool. But now that I've gone pretty deep into it, I've decided to pick this up post haste.

So who has it here and who's up for some MP?

I think I'm the only guy who plays this on this board. ;) Sorry about the multiplayer though I don't have the time for it at the moment, and I think my, uh, "copy" of it won't work with multiplayer.

LOL well like said I don't have the time nor the credit card to get the game, but let's try to con some other people on this board so that you can blow them up. Seriously I don't take much fun blowing up people I don't know either, I feel like I'm just fighting a more unpredictable computer AI.

My next purchase though is goign to be Doom 3 since we will be having it for Halloween.

I've been playing Sins of A Solar Empire. It's a good game, but sometimes the pacing seems to drag. I'm still getting the hang of the game in single player, I'll put a post here if I get into multiplayer.

One nice thing is that the developers have shown strong support for the game after it was realeased. From what I understand, patches have made the gameplay a lot more balanced. I heard that an expansion pack with more races and and a bigger tech tree is underway as well.

Sell your blood or something. Hobos do it for beer, you can do it for a game.

The slow pacing is what I like about the game. Other RTS's have you doing the TANK TANK TANK TANK GO GO GO rush tactic over and over again. With Sins, the slow pace and powerful units allow for much more strategy oriented gameplay. You actually have to outthink your opponent to win, not just overpower. It's the main reason why I like Sins over every other RTS out right now.

And hey, if you want to play a game or two, I'll be more than happy to have you along for the ride. :)

LOL I have the budget to buy it, beer, I just don't have the credit card to do so! The game is not available here and that means I have to get it online, which means a credit card. I have cash, I just don't have a card.

Renzatic,

I know just what you mean about the pace. It is truly a real time strategy game, not a real time mouse clicking contest.

There were just two issues I found with the game's pacing. Having to raze enemy planets before you can colonize them gets tedious - I get bored watching my ships blast a planet as the "planetary health" meter creeps slowly downward. The endgame also gets drawn out. I've mainly played with small two player maps so far, and even after the bulk of my enemy's fleet is wiped out I've had to spend hours bombing undefended planets and chasing stray frigates before the game decided that I won.

This issue aside, it's still a great game. I like making my inner planets into research power houses with lots of military and civil research stations while making settlements close to the front lines staging areas. The leveling up feature for capital ships is nice too.

Hmm I played 4 games already one on a medium map, it wasn't so bad. The bombing of enemy planets was not a bad thing in my book, I mean think of the bombing as the time it takes you to colonize the world.

I'm sure you've thought of this before, but in case you haven't, I recommend you do what I do when buying stuff online.

See, I'm all paranoid about using my credit card online. I figure that one day, I'll open up my bill and see a charge on there for a Hummer and an order for a 20 pound crate of Polynesian rototiller porn for some kid in Oklahoma. So instead of using it, I got a Visa money card for all my online stuff. I load it up with the amount of money I need to buy whatever I want online, so if someone does steal it, it'll just bounce and no one gets hurt...cept maybe my credit, which I can probably clear up fairly quickly.

If you can grab them where you're at, I suggest getting one.
