Sure, Gears of War won a few awards, and BioShock did too. And there's always Halo to consider... but the "real" top game of all time is something of a single-player surprise.

Are you sitting down? Ok, then here it goes: The most popular game of all time is Windows Solitaire.

No, not Gears of War; or Halo 1-3, or even the record-breaking Grand Theft auto IV. Solitaire. Boring old single-player Solitaire, or "Patience" to the British.

It makes perfect sense, according to Slate, which has up this week an expose on every office worker and housewife's favorite freeware title. Sure, it's installed on every Windows machine as they leave the factory, but that doesn't take away from the fact that everyone has played this "video game" at least once. The same can't be said of games like Halo, can it?

"Though on its face it might seem trivial, pointless, a terrible way to waste a beautiful afternoon, etc., solitaire has unquestionably transformed the way we live and work," writes Slate's Josh Levin. "Computer solitaire propelled the revolution of personal computing, augured Microsoft's monopolistic tendencies, and forever changed office culture. It has also helped the human race survive innumerable conference calls and airplane trips. If solitaire is not the most important computer program of all time, it is at least in the top two, along with Minesweeper."

Bottom line, Solitaire is the most popular, addictive, and time-consuming video game ever created by man. And it hasn't really made any money. In fact, studies show workers playing Solitaire on the clock actually waste money by being unproductive. Kind of makes all this console war stuff seem kind of silly, doesn't it?

Nah.

Does it matter if it's the regular Solitare, or any form of Solitare?

I'm glad it's a single player game that's considered the most popular. I always considered those as the best type of games.

snip

I remember this old commercial - it must've been about ten years ago now - where they showed this guy hiding behind his computer monitor on his desk at home, and a disembodied voice then proceeded to try and interrupt whatever it was this guy was doing with questions, questions about his computer... 'does it have this? does it have that?, did you pay for this upgrade?, did you buy that?'... to which the guy answers, 'yes, yes, yes, yes', but never ever once looks up. Apparently what he's doing is really important stuff, right? Then the voice asked the ultimate question: 'What do you use your (implied super) computer for?' The guy working on his computer answers curtly, 'Play cards.' Then they swing the camera around and show that this thing that he's been so intent on is... Solitaire. I don't remember who exactly the commercial was for company-wise, but the gist of the message was that their knowledgeable staff will make sure you get the right computer for your needs and that you don't buy anything more than you need. Not only was the commercial funny, but it was also the truth.

Solitaire is the game where you can play if you bored in every thing you are playing in your computer...

I went through a long period away from console gaming. But I killed a lot of midnight hours taking breaks from writing. . . smoking cigarettes, drinking bourbon, and playing the freebie MS games. The one I liked though was MS Hearts, not Solitaire. The only other game I played during this period was the two Sierra Pinball games "Creepnight" and the Sci-fi themed one.

I've never learned how to play Solitaire.

the thing about whatever version of Solitaire is played on a PC, be it Klondike, Pyramid, etc. is that *non-gamers* play it at work all the time. I am in lots of different offices when I'm working and I see it on lots of people's screens, people that don't even know what Tetris is, much less Halo or FF or any other console game. I mean people like the little old lady in bookkeeping, the security guard on graveyard shift, whatever. But with Solitaire, why, you can play that with a $2 deck of cards from the drug store on the corner. you don't even need a PC.
