With this current trend of PC games becoming limited in the number of times you can install it is making me consider getting a PS 3 and saying goodbye to my PC.This is ridiculous and there should be some law against this.Mass Effect i heard can be installed 3 times then after that it expires?what kind of crap is that.I was also told it would check activation every 10 days?developers ***** about there games being pirated then they turn around and try to rip the consumer off.

Seriously if i didnt have a PC id be happy enough just gaming on my PSP.The restrictions are getting ridiculous so they want to make it to where 10 years down the road u cant pick up an oldie to play through it again. So technically you arent buying a game for 50$ your renting it what a crock of ****.I think ill go over to the mass effect forums and raise hell and get my ass banned

Every time you see a game come out like that, send the publisher a note saying you're not buying it for that reason, then asking them, what is one hundred percent of zero? If enought people did that for every game with the install limitation they would start to get the message.

EA Backs Down From 10-Day Authentication
Community Manager, Jay Watamaniuk, has posted to the Mass Effect forums saying,

“There has been a lot of discussion in the past few days on how the security requirements for Mass Effect for PC will work. BioWare, a division of EA, wants to let fans know that Mass Effect will not require 10- day periodic re-authentication.”

The reasons jumpward.

Watamaniuk explains that the change of heart comes as a result of listening to quite so many people pointing out how an every 10 day authentication would make the game impossible for them to play.

“BioWare has always listened very closely to its fans and we made this decision to ensure we are delivering the best possible experience to them. To all the fans including our many friends in the armed services and internationally who expressed concerns that they would not be able re-authenticate as often as required, EA and BioWare want you to know that your feedback is important to us.”

So what instead? A one-time online authentication (and additional checks whenever you add new downloadable content), and no need to have the disc in the drive after that. Blimey - it’s like being treated with dignity as a customer!

Things do get a bit BioShock with the news that this alternative method means it can be installed on up to three computers, and further authorisation will require a call to EA. However, it does appear that you’ll be able to install it on three separate machines without the disc, which, er, no one point it out.

Nice to see some response to all the negative feedback BioWare/EA's been getting lately. I'll still await a crack so I don't have to restart my computer every time I habitually pull up Process Explorer.

I agree, I was really looking forward to Mass Effect but when I heard about the stupid protection it had, I was immediately turned off to it. PC games market these days is really bad, so worried about Piracy and clamping down on it but at the cost of making games unplayable even for the honest consumers which obviously far outway the number of pirates, all for the sake of making more money in 'there' eyes, even when most of the pirates proberly wouldn't go out and buy the game in the first place

Since they dropped the stupid 10 day activation i'm re-interested in getting this, but with AoC coming out, i'll proberly not have time to play it.

Well im already tiring of gaming in general to be honest and this only pushes me away even more.I just feel like gaming is becoming work for me now.I find myself with tons of games that i feel like i need to finish but i struggle to even start playing them.I think the most fun i have gaming now is when me and aku co-op online.Otherwize i feel like its a struggle to just play.I had 8 months away from gaming i build a new PC come back to gaming but it lost something IMO.The magic just isnt there anymore.I could see myself getting caught up in simulators like flight sim x or something of the sort but overall my love of gaming is dying

I sort of felt like that a while ago. I took a sabbatical from gaming for several months, and now I game very casually, which actually suits me fine; I don't have that much free time anyway, and I've substituted some more constructive activities for all the time I used to spend gaming: I go out more often, I spend more time studying, I started latin and ballroom dancing, and I'm basically enjoying myself a hell of a lot more.

I wouldn't suggest dropping gaming altogether unless you're not enjoying it at all anymore, I'd say just cut back. I buy maybe one new game a month now. I don't play much, so games tend to last me a month or more. It saves me money, and I still get to play all the games I want, since the AAA releases are few and far between. And since I have other activities that take up my time, I don't feel the urge to game much, so it all works out in the end.

I won't be ditching my PC just yet there are some exclusives that I really *must* play like Jagged Alliance 3 and Stalker Clear Skies.

But a few things could make me turn my back on the PC for the most part, I said before if mouse control becomes standardized on the PS3 that's where I'm going to be. My PSP is also seeing a lot more gaming time than my PC right now.

The DRM crap on the PC is getting ridiculous. I think Bioshock had some kind of install 3 times only crap going for it as well just like Mass Effect. Seriously they need to stop doing turd like this it's not prompting any pirate to buy the game and it's just pissing off the legit consumers.

Then we get games like Vegas 2 which are just a freaking embarassment in catering to console sensibilities.

Well unbelievably I'm totally happy wasting my time on my PSP playing Key of Heaven, Flow, Patapon and Wild Arms. I just got off my PS2 with Persona 3 FES. It's like a revival of consoles for me this year.

I just feel like gaming is becoming work for me now.I find myself with tons of games that i feel like i need to finish but i struggle to even start playing them.I think the most fun i have gaming now is when me and aku co-op online.Otherwize i feel like its a struggle to just play.

I think you justneed to settle down and focus on one or two games at a time. I had this problem too and I had so many games that I "needed" to play and finish but no time to do it all. It wasn't healthy so what I do is I just "let go" and just play what I want, when I want. If I don't feel like playing, I don't at all. Eventually you'll get a hankering to play something and when that happens just play it by ear and do what you feel like.

Part of the problem is that there aren't that many great games coming out recently, the kind that really keeps you playing. I have went through a whole boatload of games and these haven't kept my attention at all: Assassin's Creed, Hellgate London, Gears of War, Medieval II, The Witcher, etc. You know what I did? Either uninstalled them or just kept the ones I still plan to play (like the Witcher) installed on the harddrive ready to be pulled out if the itch hits me.

This is the nice thing about the PSP: if the urge to play hits, all I need to do is pull it out of my pocket and start playing. On the other hand if that happened iwth say the Witcher and I was out in the office or something, I'd have to wait til I got home ot play, by then the itch would have gone.

Like ilnadmy said just cut back. It'll do wonders.

I'm right here with you on this one Bane. I've got games that I've bought that I've yet to even play. Now that's just ****in sad. I got a relatively new GPU to tide me over for the next couple of years, but I mean seriously I don't think I'm even going to bother building a new beast when the time comes that I can't play games at even decent settings. The PC market has changed imo.

It might be time to give consoles more of a nod. I mean they are becoming more like PC's anyways. Oh well. Good luck with your decision. I'd like to have some more co-op sessions with you guys come summer time when I get GRAW2 or whatever you guys are playing.

I thought that Bioware was dropping the 'periodic online checking' so they basically lied to the whole community, and not only that, has a rootkit in the install as well, GG Bioware proberly lost a whole lot of respect on that one.

If this is a sign of the times where games have rootkits and insane anti-piracy then i'll just ditch the PC and head back to consoles, the other issue is what happens with jerks who create viruses for fun, get hold of the rootkit code and reverse-engineer it to do nasty things?

Ugh this DRM stuff is really stupid and it gives me even more incentive to just pirate and wait for Dopeman versions of games.
