Any of you DS owners plan on picking this one up? Even heard of it? This is the extremely Japan-centric game Square released for the DS in Japan last year. I thought it looked cool as hell, especially the way you control two characters at the same time (one on each screen) but I never thought the game would see the light of day in the US. You should check out the screenshots. . . this is another game on the DS that looks better than a lot of the stuff we're seeing on the Wii.

Here's the first page of the 3 page IGN review. The games supposed difficulty level is the one thing that concerns me, because just not up for extremely hard games these days.

The World Ends With You Review
Square Enix and the makers of Kingdom Hearts create one of the best games on DS.
by Bozon

April 16, 2008 - Most gamers out there would probably agree that the world of role-playing games has been stuck in a specific rut for quite a while. We're not talking down on games like Fire Emblem and Advance Wars on DS (RPG-like tactical games), or the still-remarkable Final Fantasy series, but rather the hundreds upon hundreds of RPGs out there that don't dare to be different. We can understand a few "period piece" role-playing games, but does every story-heavy adventure out there need to revolve around swords, bows, magic, castles, and hoards of monsters emerging from some sort of ultimate evil? It's fine in moderation – and when done extremely well, games go beyond any preconceptions – but the RPG world could use a little kick in the pants to get it moving, and that's exactly what The World Ends With You is. Square Enix – more specifically Team Jupiter, the creators of Kingdom Hearts – has challenged every facet of the RPG genre, and the result is one of the best pocket games we've played in years, and one of the top DS experiences out there.

More than any other DS title out there we could write volumes on the features and intricacies in The World Ends With You, so while we'll be covering every aspect in this final review, we urge players that want to know more to check out our latest in-depth hands-on with the game, as it too has a wealth of information to read through.

Like we mentioned, The World Ends With You (formally called It's a Wonderful World in Japan, but changed due to licensing issues with the name) is out to challenge everything you'd commonly expect from a RPG experience – especially one on DS – and it flourishes because of it. The story is set in common day Japan, more specifically in the Shibuya district of Tokyo, following the story of an introverted (to a fault) teen by the name of Neku who wakes up mysteriously in the middle of the city streets. Within minutes he receives a text message on his phone that states that he has only a few minutes to complete the first stages of "The Game" or face erasure. Unaware of his past, and unable to communicate with anyone on the busy streets of Shibuya, Neku is thrust into a ghost-like world where he and his partner must complete daily challenges, destroy evil entities known as "Noise" which are the embodiment of stress and social distortion in the world, and attempt to regain his life back one day at a time. Along the way the game's referees and designers, The Reapers, give Neku and his partners new missions, and force them to run the rat race that is The Game.

Since the story is so completely "out there," especially for a pocket RPG, it'll take a while for players to warm up to the storytelling, characters, and design of The World Ends With You. The game has a very specific art style that you'll either love or hate, but for those on the fence about it we encourage you to give the game a shot, as there's far more depth here than anywhere else on DS, and that's no overstatement. Everything from the battle system, unique world interface, storytelling, music, and interactive "out of game" elements make The World Ends With You a must-play experience, and the visual style is just the beginning.

The most exclusive aspect of The World Ends With You is the battle system, which combines the use of d-pad and touch screen to control both Neku and his active partner at the same time. Since the Reaper's Game is all about having teams of two compete, Neku instantly meets his first partner Shiki, and the race is on. As the player, you'll need use Neku's advanced psychic power to harness "pins" that are found throughout the world (over 300 in all) to do specific stylus actions, while also putting in d-pad combos for Shiki on the top screen. The same enemies exist in each world, so it's a matter of juggling back and forth with both characters, passing a combo puck from player to player with each attack and building up insane combos.

The battle system is extremely daunting at first, and the game even encourages you to take it one step at a time until you feel comfortable playing both sides at once. There's an auto-battle system for your partner on the top screen, so if needed, players can drop the d-pad control for a slower (but still helpful) automated system. The action can get extremely hectic, but once you master the dual screen combat it'll prove exactly why The World Ends With You can only exist on a system like DS, and it's a remarkable battle mechanic in the end. Not only will you have touch controls and d-pad battle, but also on-the-fly mini-game aspects such as roulette wheels and card-matching puzzles, each of which lead to use super-attacks that deal tremendous damage. There's no beating around the bush with the game's difficulty though; it's hard, and meant only for the hardcore.

that's looking like a must own, for sure. I have all but given up on RPGs on the DS since the last few I've tried have insisted that you learn to scribble some sort of rune. but this one looks very insteresting indeed. it's getting good reviews from all quarters.

i recently tried to get into Dawn Of Mana by Square (PS2). It looks great, especially upscaled to 720p. but the lousy enemy tracking and camera control kills it.

Yeah I've heard of it. But never once had any interest in it. Not my thang.

How can you turn your nose up at a game that Gamespot describes as having pieces of The Matrix and Battle Royale?

I said I done with buying games for a while (with the exception of Metal Gear that I already preordered) but I gots to pick this one up. My DS has collected a fine layer of dust and this sounds like the ticket to make me pick it up again.

I saw this title today at Best Buy for $39.99, and they had 8 or 9 copies. I hate paying that much for a handheld game, tho I have done so before. I'm thinking it will drop in price in a few weeks, but if anyone sees it cheaper please post.

The game sells for $29.99 on Amazon, but it ships in 2-4 weeks. I would have bought it, but I'm leaving the country soon so that won't work. I'm trying to find other options, I'll post them if I find any.

I got it from Gamefly yesterday, but haven't had a chance to play it. It looked like the kind of game I'd never finish, and I'm an RPG amateur and this one supposedly has a wicked difficulty level. But I very much wanted to dabble with it, check out the art style and sound, and see how they pulled off controlling two characters at the same time on two different screens.

But who knows, if it hooks me, I like the fact that Gamefly gives you the option to buy the game if you like it.

Errr... I'm not really feeling this. Scribbling on the screen has taken the place of button mashing. All the high scores surprises me. I'll stick with it in case it gets better down the road, but it's not a hard game. Just scribble (or tap) in a certain direction until that attack has to reload then scribble in another direction, per your pins.

The second character you control feels like an after thought, considering you don't have to control her. But you get ranked after every fight so I guess that's supposed to be incentive to control her and get better items maybe? Even then it still feels like an afterthought since you can pretty much blindly press in one direction or the other without paying any attention. I mean, it really strikes me as a game for teens overcaffeinated on energy drinks with ADD. But like I said, I've barely started it. Hopefully it gets better.

I'll check this out. Have to get my DS working though it's like I haven't touched it in a year.

I'm seriously considering selling my DS at this point.

But the game does get better. I still think it's overrated but after several more hours I'm definitely happier with it than I was before. There is a lot of depth and a lot of gameplay mechanics. It's just a little too paint my numbers with the story and gameplay as it's very linear and I still stand by what I said about the battle system though. Great story though. A cross between The Matrix and Battle Royale was not an exaggeration on gamespot's part. Very cool cyberpunk theme going on.

It's not a hard game but they do rank you after very fight and I do find getting an A or B rank really hard. Mostly I get Cs, Ds, and Es.

Man I just started the game and I have to say it sucks. Seems like some kind of Matrix/BR story trying to get with a Persona 3 vibe. I downloaded the soundtrack though. :)

The gameplay is just horrible and the dialogue is unbelievably assinine, and this is coming from an anime junkie. I can't stand it. The art style also seems confused as to whether it wants to look like Kingdom Hearts or Tweeny Witches.

I am not sure what to do with my DS. I actually considered selling it too in order to buy a new funky celphone that I saw, because I really just wasn't using it.

I left it with my GF for about a year. I installed a few new things on it -- World Ends with You and Rondo of Swords -- both were extremely underwhelming. The only game I really like on the DS really is Phoenix Wright; but I can finish those in a day and there are only four of them. The DS is such *yawn* platform for me and there doesn't seem to be anything coming that can save it for me, even the next Phoenix Wright game is a long ways off, and with the way the 4th game went I'm not even sure I want the 5th game.

I guess the next thing to get for it would be Etrian Odyssey 2.

LOL! You're like my twin across the Pacific or something. I was really trying to see the positives of the game since it got so many good reviews. But it's not the first time I thought a popular game sucked. I thought the art was more Jet Grind Radio, which I actually liked, but this not so much. The RB/Matrix concepts is the only thing I have to latch onto, but in all reality, I probably won't finish it. I play it in really small doses 'cause the gameplay really irks my nerves. The soundtrack is unbelievably good though. Calling is a really awesome track.

The only game I'm really waiting for is Dragon Quest IX, but with no release date even announced I might just say 'ef it and go ahead and sell it.

Well I left my DS with my GF again so I'll probably have the chance to play this like next year. Or when I find another game interesting enough to make me get my DS back. ;)
