Another Top 10 from Hop. (http://www.gamezone.com/top10/difficult_4.htm) This one I don't know about.
Countdown:
10. Alien Hominid HD (XBLA)
09. Ikaruga (Multi)
08. R-Type (?)
07. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (?)
06. Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos (NES)
05. Shinobi (PS2)
04. Ghosts 'N' Goblins
03. Contra 4 (NDS)
02. Battletoads (NES)
01. Ninja Gaiden Sigma (PS3)
Questionable. Very questionable.
Most curious to me is the listing of Contra 4. The new game? Really?
The Contra games always kick my azz; Alien Hominid HD kicks my azz; Ninja Gaiden for the Xbox was exhausting; and Ikaruga was very confusing.
But the hardest game I ever played was IndyCar Series 2005. I never even got to qualify my car for a race.

I'd have to say Super Magnetic Neo and MDK2 on the Dreamcast were tough as well.
Although a JRPG, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne on the PS2 had some truly tough mid bosses. I never made it past one on the first try.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma is nowhere near the top ten hardest games, I can't imagine why they listed it as #1. Same goes for Ninja Gaiden 2. IMO, that was the easiest of the trilogy.
TMNT for the NES is one of the hardest games I've ever played.
The R-type games were always challenging for me for some reason. Gradius, I could wup on, but not R-type.
The NES games listed are just the most common challenging games that most people know of. IMO, Total Recall should be on the list, along with games like Fester's Quest, Blaster Master, Darkman, Megaman, Top Gun, Silver Surfer, and the hardest game I've ever played(not frustrating, just eye-gouging hard), Solar Jetman. One of the most original games I've played, too.

I always thought Alex Kidd in Miracle World for Sega Master System was hard. A lot of those games where one touch from an enemy means your character dies. Frustrating.
Also, there was a Sega Genesis game called Chakan the Forever Man. I'm not sure if that was a hard game, or that I just wasn't good at it.
I can't think of any hard games that have come out for the current or even last gen systems.

TMNT1 for NES wasn't that hard, I finished that one relatively easy. Battletoads, now that's another story! And it definitely deserves to be up there on the list, actually I'd say it should be #1. No other game in the entire history of gaming frustrated me as much as that game outside of games that just plain had stupid game design.
I agree Total Recall should be on the difficult list, but that is due to bad game design more than actually being challenging in a fair sense. Rockman 1 was hard but you could get a knack for it (unlike Battle Toads) and further it had the Select cheat which let you finish it easy if you were having too hard a time. Top Gun wasn't *that* hard and it was pretty short as well. Dark Man was about on the same level of difficulty as Batman or even Rockman/Megaman. I can't seem to remember how Blaster Master played and I don't think I ever played Silver Surfer or Solar Jetman. Oh, another really fracking hard game on the NES was Back to the Future 2&3.
Not sure why Ninja Gaiden II is so high on the list, I found Ninja Gaiden 1 to be much harder. However Cuddly I have to disagree Ninja Gaiden 3 was definitely easier than Ninja Gaiden 2. In difficulty Ninja Gaiden 1 > Ninja Gaiden 2 > Ninja Gaiden 3.
Contra 4 doens't deserve to be anywhere near Ghosts N Goblins, that game was another hell murder game.
I never finished Shinobi, it was hard but I never thought it was hell hard. NGSigma I never played, didn't play R-Type either or Ikaruga or Alien Hominid.

I'm surprised so many people have trouble with TMNT, I thought the difficulty for that was reasonable. It gave a good challenge and had a well-balanced game design. It wasn't easy by a longshot but it was never "cheap."

well cheap is a false sense of hard to me. Cheap=fustration and false diffculty. I don't think a game deserves honors as most difficult if it had to resort to cheap tactics to make it hard. So TMNT should be on the list.
Recently I beat COD4 on Veteran. It took me a long time but it was fun to do. It wasn't fustrating, and imo it made the game more fun than the online mode which I think was pretty well done in COD4.

That's the thing, TMNT wasn't cheap, and it was never that hard either. The challenge level was moderate and it was never really really hard. Battletoads wasn't exactly cheap either it was really just hard and shoudl really be near the top of the list, personally I think it tops the list.
Ghosts and Goblins now that is a cheap game.
Devil May Cry was one of those games that I also thought was genuinely hard, and not cheap. I could never get passed the spider boss, I suck that much. :) But I never felt it was cheap.
