Prediction - Sony will EXPLOIT Small Xbox HDD...

to sell theirs. SEriously, the PS2 HDD will be 40GB and unless it is completely useless(which it will be with older games and probably be otherwise), expect PS2 fanboys going crazy over the HDD and laughing at the Xbox HDD because it's small which will bring up another one of those PS2 DVD out the box vs. Xbox HDD out the box craps.

My guess is that you are SERIOUSLY overestimating how much PS2 owners care about a HD.

Hmm, the only reason sony is bringing out the hd is for FFXI. Otherwise, you wouldn't be seeing this thing. I think at this point in time, a 40gig hd is probably the most cost-efficient mechanism. I don't think size is an issue. 40gigs of space that ps2 owners will only scratch the surface of. Besides that, they have to pay for it. So, is this really a concern? Sounds like much ado about nothing, Tappy.

Needs to be 40GB, if it was only 8GB like the XBOX, it would come with only 2GB available. FF XI takes up around 6GB for the PC version after installing the game and the expansion it comes with. PS2 is supposed to be the same game, so I'm assuming it takes up the same amount of space on a HDD. So it needs to be a good size HDD.

Are games like Syphon Filter: Omega Strain and Resident Evil Online going to need the HDD?

The way I see it is the PS2 has alot of games, so it's a given that It'll need more room to save all those crappy games on it. 40GB is ridiculous, it should be something along the lines of 10 or 15.

The way I see it the only way Sony can make the hard drive a success, regardless of size, is if every game that comes out after the HD release requires the HD to be used. Otherwise this drive will be sent to the grave pretty quickly. There is no way, I think, that anyone can justify buying a HD for the PS2 for just a handful of games. I know I won't. My games work just fine without one. BTW, I've only required one PS2 mem card since launch. Deleting files for games you don't play anymore works, people.

Wow Tappy...um...do you even know what the word "exploit" means? Let me help you...

ex·ploit ** (*P*)**Pronunciation Key**(ksploit, k-sploit)
n.

An act or deed, especially a brilliant or heroic one. See Synonyms at feat1.
tr.v. ex·ploit·ed, ex·ploit·ing, ex·ploits (k-sploit, ksploit)

1. To employ to the greatest possible advantage: exploit one's talents.
2. To make use of selfishly or unethically: a country that exploited peasant labor. See Synonyms at manipulate.
3. To advertise; promote.

Seems to me if Sony is taking advantage of the Xbox's wimpy 8 gig hard drive, M$ only has itself to blame.

at least MS GAVE AWAY the HDD. 8 GB is just fine for what it is...this is yet another opprotunity for Sony to take advantage of ignorant minds accross the planet.

Kinda like building-in internet and DVD capabilities, then charging people extra to unlock them. :p

I just don't see the HDD selling enough for a lot of 3rd party companies to make games that will require the thing. After reading the latest PSM, the HDD will need the network adapter, and if you don't already have the network adapter, it will cost around $140 for both (w/Final Fantasy XI included).

I believe harddrive is the expected step for console makers. One way or another this move was expected for a while and now that x-box has released it, the idea of having a harddrive is now virtually universal. I bet all of the next next gen systems are going to have one. Question is how much is too much? Personally, I think 40 GB for merely saving games seems a bit too much. If sony,ms,nin actually put a huge harddrive in their system, its obviously going to be used more than storing saved game files. Knowing nintendo, they'll probably make swapable harddrives, so u can bring your saved games to your friends house or something. By the way, harddrives now a days are dirt cheap i remember buying a 100GB harddrive almost 2 years ago and now that original $200cdn has been slashed in half or even less. Lets welcome harddrives with open arms.
