Famitsu publisher thinks new DS will be shown at E3
by Kyle Orland Apr 11th 2008 1:19PM

All you jerks out there who are used to lording your shiny new DS Lites over Phat-owning early-adopters might have to get used to playing second fiddle soon. In the latest issue of Japanese gaming rag Famitsu, publisher Hirokazu Hamamura speculates that a new version of Nintendo's best-selling handheld may be revealed at this summer's E3 trade show.

As detailed in a Bloomberg Japan report (sketchy machine translation), Hamamura's comments seem based on nothing more than industry chatter and pure conjecture on his part -- Nintendo predictably offered up a no comment. The timing does seem about right, though -- going back to the Game Boy days, Nintendo has released a new portable hardware revision roughly every two years since 1996's Game Boy Pocket (1998: Game Boy Color; 2001: Game Boy Advance; 2003: GBASP; 2004: Nintendo DS; 2005: Game Boy Micro; 2006: DS Lite).

What would you like to see on a potential DS upgrade? ...

What would you like to see on a potential DS upgrade? ...

The system itself is fine, but it's the lack of good games (IMO) on the system that has me disappointed. I'm close to getting rid of it. I only have Castlevania and Deal or No Deal for the thing, and I have no interests in playing them. Also, there's absolutely nothing coming out soon that I am interested in,

No Ninja Gaiden for you, RBH? But really, I'm in the same boat as you. I don't really have to much interest in most games that come out for the DS. There are a few, but hell, I think there are more PSP games that I want than DS games.

I played the demo of Ninja Gaiden from Circuit City. It was ok. Using the stylus for everything wasn't bad for short bursts, but I would grow tired of it in the long run. More than likely, it would make me want to play NG Sigma or the upcoming NG 2 with a regular controller.

Lack of games? You guys are crazy.

I've already bought and played more DS games than I have GameBoy, GameBoy Color, GBA, or any other handheld games for that matter. Combined. Probably twice as many more. Heck, that's just counting my DS Lite-era games, when I remember the games I had for my original DS it might even be three times more!

Of course, I could say the same thing about my PSP too. But I don't think that's a reflection of me and mine, I really do think that it's a reflection of the games... period.

Anyhow, in answer to the question "What would you like to see on a potential DS upgrade?"... I know what I wouldn't like to see: a simple re-design. That would be stupid. And it would piss me off actually. There's nothing wrong with the system as it is now. (It could use a better battery, but that doesn't mean that the whole thing needs to be reshaped.)

So if they're going to introduce a new DS model it better be a full-fledged DS2. One with PSP-like screens and graphics. That's the only thing I would ask for.

The system is great. The software sucks.

Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, Brain Age, and possibly the New Super Mario Bros game are the only things I think is worth playing on the system. The other stuff? It's either kiddy crap or games I don't find interesting.

The DS is just too low-tech, too kiddy, and too uncomfortable. I hope a DS2 is released with a bigger screen, slimmer ergonomic profile, and graphics that are AT LEAST as good as the PS1's. For crying out loud it's 2008 we're not in the 16-bit era anymore.

I'd like to see at least one nub mouse like the psp has. This would open up a lot of games that are kind of limited with just the dpad.

I think it's time for a new system with better CPU(s), larger screens and the nub mouse. :)
