I had fairly high hopes that this game would be above average with all the different elements involved, and it seems to be as good as I thought it might. Too bad the camera is shotty, but hey, so is GTA. I've played this game on a OPM demo, and it played very well. Easy car handling and shooting, but the fighting could've used some more tweaking. Maybe it's because I couldn't "up" my character in the training facilities. But whatever, it still played with less glitches than any GTA game. It's also kind of bad that most of the GTA fanboys won't give this game a shot, thinking it's too much of a clone, which it's not.

I'm still gonna look into it, if only renting it.

There's a lot of games out there (and some in the future) with shotty cameras, but I hope this camera is better than Dead to Rights (the worst camera I have ever played). If so, this is a keeper. If not, I will be disappointed.

Did anyone else get the feeling from that review that maybe IGN was being a bit "kind"? They just did not seem all that wild about the game. I would bet that the other reviews are in the 7.5-8.5 range. Good but not outstanding. Also, what about those legal problems with the release date?

ARGH! TRue Crime is OUT! WTF?! I just saw it at Software ETc...dammit, should I wait for GTA on Wednesday or just drop for TC?! I dunno! THere['s not enough reviews and IGN isn't credible in my eyes!

Wow, it's AMAZING how frikkin MASSIVE the city is. It's taking me a while to get accustomed to everything but I REALLY like what I see so far. Great OST!

Sounds like you picked up TC instead of GTA. Not a bad choice, especially if you have already played GTA on PS2.

I think the legal issues is one of the reasons why it came out a few days earlier. The other reason is to beat GTA for Xbox to the shelves.

So far, I'm liking this game. I haven't had any clipping problems as mentioned at IGN, but the camera does seem to need adjustments while I'm fighting indoors. It's not too bad though. It controls waaaaaaaaaaay better than that crap called "The Getaway". The driving is easy; the fighting isn't hard but simple until you go to dojos and unlock moves; the only problem I have right now is getting used to the shooting. That shouldn't take too much time to get used to.

Ok, here's the lowdown...

Xbox version supports...720P and custom soundtracks.

The graphics aren't the best in the world, they look like an updated version of GTA for PS2, BUT considering the VAST size of the game I can't complain.

Fighting and shooting are completely independent and could stand by themselves as their own games because they are excellently done, especially the fighting which is deep and fluid and also there are dojos all around town which you can learn new tecniques and movies. Shooting is unique...you can auto-aim enemies and switch targets at will, or if you hold the R trigger you go into bullet time and can manually aim at enemies. Shooting while driving is no different. While you can't go into "drive by view" like in GTA, you can shoot auto aim while driving or you can go into bullet time and aim directly for the head.

While walking on the streets you have 3 different "stances" to use...fighting, shooting, and walking. Each stance is entered by a simple dpad press and each stance offers a variety of techniques.

Now...the racing engine...at first, I HATED it, it sucked so bad when i first started playing but now, I wouldn't have it any other way. Cars and trucks flip all over the place, and the AI is MUCH better and more interesting to watch. If you walk out in the street you can flash your badge anytime, shoot your gun in the air, and dive(or slide) tackle people, then cuff people.

You can start killing innocents and turn into a bad cop, if you kill a cop you really get in some hot water eventually getting SWAT after you.

The only thing GTA has on this game are bells and whistles like helicopters, boats, and motorcycles...

The following are ways in which GTA PALES in comparison to True Crime:

1. GTA has HORRIBLE gun play
2. GTA has HORRIBLE fighting
3. GTA has no direction in events, TC allows for branching paths which every action causes an equal but opposite reaction.
4. GTA has an unrealistic over-the-top AI in which cops kill innocents(and eachother) like it's nobody's business, this is not the case in True Crime whatsoever.
5. GTA is MINISCULE compared to TC, which takes me about a hour (literraly) to drive from one end of the map to the other(on the interstate).
6. GTA has planned missions located around the map you drive to to start them, TC has this as well, but TC also has random crimes which really keep the game fresh and exciting.

TC does have a few glitches Ive ran into but nothing major.

GTA does have more than one advantage. Namely the series takes place in fictional cities, rather than the loser-infested waste of space called LA.

The game does look pretty amazing though, I just have a beef with one of the most worthless cities ever to disgrace the planet.(fact, look it up :P) But that won't stop me from enjoying the game.

...because I only played it for like 2 hours last night. I really like the fact that you can frisk, show your badge, and all that kind of cool stuff. I really like the fact that you are cruising around LA and the graphics are actually more well-done than GTA. I like the fighting and the bullet-time features too. Now for what I don't like. I don't like that you are in LA and there is practically no traffic(pedestrian or auto) to be found. It was like they created this really cool world but forgot to give it a cool feel like it was living and breathing---it feels really shallow in comparison. I don't really like the driving---it feels like the physics are off. Plus where are the cool GTA type police chases? Not to be found considering there are hardly any cops on the streets no matter how bad you are. Plus it is just not that fun to just drive around aimlessly in this game. As far as the missions go---I did not really get that far because my yin and yang meter is so far in the negative. See I was just trying to create havoc on the street so when I came across criminal activity I would just shoot the perps or run them over. I don't really like that you can solve crimes by either running people over every time or by just blowing their car up. I think that the point is to try to be more strategic about it though. Anyway, I will play tonight, and I will try to play as a good cop to see where that gets me, but my initial reaction is that the game is another case of great ideas that go unfullfilled because it is just not that fun and well executed.

Actually, depending on which side of town you are on, if you start shooting people up, the cops, the SWAT, or gangs will come after you and they will give one HELLUVA chase. The game has a learning curve and it took me a while not to end up negative(Im about 30 positive now) and the fighting and shooting just keep getting deeper. I will say that there is not enough traffic and pedestrians and sometimes the AI is screwy(wrecking while in a cinema is part hilarious part sad) but seriously, let the game grow more and you'll see the greatness of it eventually. Probably the thing I hate the most about it is that AWFUL soundtrack. Yea, I know I can use custom(with horrible interface) and all but the default soundtrack is full of potty mouth trendy rap music, which I'm sure will make the game sell even more but I hate it.

That's cool. I am definately going into it with an open-mind. I also realise that I was playing the game the wrong way. I think that it will certainly be a more positive gaming experience if you don't look at the game like a GTA clone. I am sure that it will at least be fun if you can try to play strategically.

Cool---thanks man I will use them. You know what I did notice when I was playing. Was it me or is that game a bit on the racist side? It seems like the only people that were holding drugs or semi-auto weapons were either black or Mexican. Have you had that experience too?

yea, somewhat. I know EGM is gonna rape the game because of "accents".

I've found drugs and weapons on all races in the game but then again, I don't really frisk too many people. How far along are you now? I'm up to Ep. 5 (there are 2 ep 5s, Im doing the top one right now), the game is getting pretty tough as well.

Damn---when did you get the game. I just got it last night, and I just messed around with it for a couple hours. My meter got to like -60 or something so I did not advance in the game at all. I am looking forward to playing tonight since you seem so high on it.

I got it 2 nights ago. I still don't think I've got the learning curve down yet but I'm getting there. Try to always just start over(or from your last save point) if you feel like going on a killing spree so that you can have your cake and eat it to...just don't progress the story if you go bad.

I kinda noticed that. I also found drugs or weapons on the white women with the black business suits.

So far, the game is pretty good. The hardest part I have found was not getting run over while chasing a perp on foot. I am at the beginning of episode II, but I have decided to get used to the shooting, fighting, etc by solving the random crimes. I did get one crime that said "There's a disturbance outside the basketball arena...the fans are fighting because "Big Shaq" got ejected"...

The main thing I don't like about the game:
Spending points to get health and cars from the parking garage. With so few health places around, it should be free, and getting cars from the garage is worthless, considering you can always get someone else's car for free.

I don't mind the music that much, I think there should have been more of a variety, and some 2Pac (since this is LA).

Overall, I would score the game somewhere between Gamespot's and IGN's scores, probably somewhere in the 8's.

Once you get the rhythm of stopping and/or disarming people without killing them and you'll have no problems getting a ton of badges. Those Cyan icons(24/7 training) are VERY important but some of them are TOUGH and they require 1 shield PER TRY, but then again, if you go to the right place in town and stay near a pharmacy, random crimes happen almost contrantly within walking distance so getting points isn't hard. I can handle short bursts of TC but that soundtrack is about to drive me insane.

Why not rip your own music and listen to a custom soundtrack? I know one group I'm not trying to listen to is Bones-Thugs-N-Harmony. They are not even West Coast, plus they suck.

So far, the hardest dojo I have come across is the one for the "Back attack". It's not hard to beat except for when Kang wants to face the object instead of having his back to it.

I've mastered the precise aim. Too bad the game doesn't allow gamers to look to the side when driving, or shooting out tires and stuff would be a breeze.

Is there anyway to save the game manually?

Well, Powell, your intellect certainly lives up to your middle name. So tell me what's got you so anti-Los Angeles? When people put down LA it's usually because of one of the following reasons:

1) They've never actually lived here.
2) They came here and couldn't hack it or failed to break into the entertainment industry.
3) They came here and didn't have the adequate social skills to deal with the women or make friends.
4) They visited and are angry that they have to return to their own hum drum city of boredom.

So, Colin which one are you? By your angry you-seem-to-have-hit-a-nerve-I'm-insecure over reaction to the mere mention of the city, I'm guessing either #2 or #3. :D Here's a little piece if advice, Mr. Neuroses: it's only a game!

Most people who can't take and/or understand sarcasm do so for the following reasons.

1) They lack the intelligence to understand and have no comprehension skills.

2) They have no sense of humor.

3) They take things way too personally because the topic is near and dear to them. (Like say...oh...ripping on someone's hometown)

4) They are really the insecure individuals who can't handle anyone saying "boo" about anything in their lives and have to be "right" all the time because they are anal-retentive jack@$$es.

No, I really don't think that LA is indeed the cesspool of the world, but if you take any major city and overpopulate it, you will usually bring out the worst in people. Walk through any ghetto in any city and you'll see the same result. I, myself am from a city who combined with it's metro area is about 3 million. While this is dwarfed in comparison to LA, we still see the same problems, just on a smaller scale. The problems being idiot street gangs who kill eachother and innocent people, and the same shallow extreme rich who care about nothing but their next cosmetic surgery.

As for my trying to make it in LA...LOL. I've never had the urge to be a movie star (aside from when I was a young child), so I would never attempt anything quite that shallow. Yeah, nothing would be better than to go to Hollyweird, and end up doing low budget porn for the rest of my life....hey wait a minute...that could be fun. :P

I said what I said because I knew I'd strike a nerve in some moron ( I use the term loosely, morons usually can't even speak in complete sentences, so we'll just refer to you as the antagonist...even though we both are in this case) who would run to his city's rescue and attempt (quite poorly I might add) to attack me, rather than to attempt to bring out LA's redeeming features and actually pose some sort of argument. Well, congratulations for coming out of the woodwork, you've done nothing more than actually support that nothing good has ever come out of LA (which I will even say isn't true).

Now, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt here and assume that you haven't read any of my posts in the past. Occassionally I will just post something sarcastic, whether I actually believe in the statement or not, just because I know somebody will jump all over it. That is the nature of System Wars after all. So respond how you like, and try not to take things personally...it's an internet forum..sheesh.

BTW I'm from the Twin Cities, go ahead and take your shots and say what you will about it. I'll be right there next to you helping you out with any of the problems we have here too.

A porno with you in it? Fun? For who? You maybe but definately not for the rest of us. I'm sure your honeymoon videotapes are what they show the really evil people, like Nazi's and PETA advocates, in the really bad part of Hell thats been reserved for em. I'm serious, remember that 5 minute clip you sent me of it and how I went missing for 2 weeks afterwords? Well after watching it I ended up doing some crazy stuff I don't remember and had to receieve psychological therapy at Greenleaf for awhile...course no amount of therapy will heal those mental wounds....it was worse than Silence of the Lambs...my god....

Yeah...you don't remember what you did for those two weeks? Well you were committed for a reason. It started innocently, sending me messages about "unparrelleled beauty" and "perfection". And then the letters and pictures slid under our door started to make us wonder a bit, but I was still flattered thinking they were for my wife. To my horror I discovered that I was the object of your sick obsession, the KY you sent us should have been a clue...how foolish I was to ignore it. What happened after that was scarier still, the kidnapping, being forced to play "Lambs" in your basement, which is probably why Silence of the Lambs sticks in your mind so often. It's taken me months of mental and physical therapy to recover from the hell you've put me through.

Now while the "home video" the wife and I made was enough to make Jenna Jamison blush, I didn't think it would have had such an undesireable effect on you.

I still never understood your obsession with eggbeaters either...I'm not sure I want to.

That wasn't me, man. That was The Game...and maybe GG78 was in on it too, he seems to have a thing for you. I was told that my 2 weeks away were spent walking around in the rain screaming "WHY!" and wondering how seemingly normal people like you could be so weird and twisted. It's hard to believe that even the most deviant bastard would do THAT at a Chucky Cheeses...oh man...it was horrible.

Still, what GG78 and Game did was even worse weirdly enough...I saw the tapes they made and it was almost as bad.

GG78: "he puts the gamecube in the basket and rubs its AAA titles on its skin."
Spastic: "I got money, mister...let me go"
GG78: "....he puts the Xbox in the basket and rubs its AAA titles on its skin"
Spastic: "didn't you just say Gamecube?"
GG78: "SHUT UP I DID NOT! LET GO OF MY DOG!"
The Game: "who's this jabroni in the hole?"

You're all sick!

I'll be right there next to you helping you out with any of the problems we have here too.</div>

I was being sarcastic! I'm not an LA native and have no great love for the city. I'm actually from New Jersey and have lived in Pittsburgh, Detroit, and Houson to name but a few cities. My "list" was an attempt to parody the arrogant creeps that do inhabit this city. It was supposed to be funny (especially the lines about women and the industry). I guess (bad) sarcasm doesn't come off too well in writing. Next time I'll have to put in more :p  to emphasize that! But all your descriptive points regarding the city are valid, I'm sorry to say.

BTW, I don't think I've ever heard anything bad regarding the Twin Cities (other than the winters). ...

Well, I'm 100% done with the game. I was feeling PUMPED until I got into the later levels which TOTALLY flop and the last boss is the most frustrating crap in years(which brought this game from a 10 to an eight all it itself!). I'll still keep it(if only for the huge size of it) but it has some SERIOUS issues. I still like it more than GTA because GTA is small compared to this one and GTA forces you to do redundant things. It was a little short but I think that due to the random crimes that will always occur, the extra depth which was added into the gunplay/fighting/shooting, and the vast size of the city this one will stay fresh. Once you get the power ups the gameplay is much deeper than you'd ever expect but still flawed in certain aspects.

Best feature? Well, not to sound like a Xbox fanboy but the custom soundtracks really made me enjoy this game more because I was HATING some of that cRAP music!

Did anyone else get the feeling from that review that maybe IGN was being a bit "kind"? They just did not seem all that wild about the game. I would bet that the other reviews are in the 7.5-8.5 range. Good but not outstanding. Also, what about those legal problems with the release date?</div>

It's starting to look like that's the case, shame on IGN. Gamespot.com which I think calls games how they see them as good as anyone, scored it a 7.2. I was a little worried after watching a few movies of gameplay that the game just didn't look very fun. And I thought haven't 240 square miles to drive around it was way too much. Like I want to spend a frickin hour driving from one side of the map to the other. IMO GTA games are the perfect size, big enough that there is plenty to explore and yet you don't really ever get lost. Plus that's like two or three reviews now that I read that said there isn't enough cars and people walking the streets. What's up with that?

That all said, I'm still glad Activision gave it a try. Sounds like they had some good ideas, but a little more work could of gone into the gameplay and story. Anyway, there are way too many great games that are out that I haven't gotten to and want to play. This game was on my list but I'll have to take it off.

Well, I have about 5 hours into the game and I must say that it is good but not great. I really like how it fuses the different gameplay elements, but it is just not as fun as GTA. I just like being able to cruise the streets and create mayhem. That is where the lack of traffic and peds comes into play. The game just seems less random and alot more story-driven than GTA. Sure there are many parts where you can drive around freely to solve random crimes, but again, it is just not that fun. I always find myself going back to the regular story instead. If I were you I would probably give it a rent because you really may like the fact that the game is so reliant on the story.

Actually, the TC area is getting pretty bad now. Apparently prostitution and gang activity are on the rise constantly, and our population of those a little bit "light in the loafers" is reaching damn near San Francisco proportions. I'm more of a suburbanite myself, but used to work in the downtown areas...man I tell ya. Not fun.

I figured you were aiming for the sarcasm angle, my jibbering on bad sarcasm etc.. were merely fuel to the fire.

Anyway, to keep this back on topic here...I have yet to check out True Crime, but it's on my list of future rentals/purchases. In the meantime, I'm sucked in with Morrowind GOTY. I was a Morrowind addict with the original, and the expansions are proving to be the fix I've been looking for.

They gave me a lifetime supply of game tokens, and my own Double Dragon (original) arcade game just for that incident. So I guess not everyone was as traumatized as you seem to be. I guess you were just horrified as seeing two people of the opposite sex in the act, as opposed to your usual farm animals or intense guy on guy action that you rent religiously from your local Blockbuster. At least that's what your FBI file says....

Keeping on the topic of games, Atari 2600 was the greatest system EVAR! Raiders of the Lost Ark is TEH SHIZZLE!

I like True Crime (yaaaah), but since it hasn't pulled me in as far as wanting to play it nonstop (like Lament O' Innocence), I'm not sure if I would be better off returning it for full cred and picking up either Prince of Persia or Legacy of Kain: Defiance (or putting the credit on Ninja Gaiden)and pick TC up later when it drops in price (more than likely on GC, since 3rd party usually don't sell well). Hmmm....what to do, what to do.......

I think it's over rated. It is cool to drive around LA, epsecially since I was just there. The map is accurate. I coulda used it. :p The landmarks are not though. Well, come are, like the Staple Center.

I've only played it a few hours and I'll delve into it more before I decide to take it back. But so far, it's a good game. I'd give it a solid 7-8 range. But I have a lot of issues with it so far, and it's far from a GTA killer.

Tappy_Tibbons

I'd say it's a LOT deeper and funner than GTA...especially once you earn all the skills...geez, driving alone you can peel out, get up on 2 wheels, go forward, do a 180 then go backwards shooting forwards, then whip back around 180 forward. Fighting you can learn multitudes of wrestling moves, you can stomp, flip-onto, or elbow drop enemies who are on the ground, then you can learn finishing combos when enemies are stunned(and some of them are BADASS!). Shooting you can get laser sights, flashlights, and scopes added to your default(infinate ammo) guns, you can race up to a perp head on, go into bullet time and take out people with one shot, you can shoot in the elbow or knee to neutralize people, and finally and most importantly, you aim your guns yourself.

I think this game is a lot better than GTA but I don't expect everyone to agree with me, I just don't see how people could see the list of what TC has that GTA doesn't then still call GTA better only because of rediculous weapons and bell n whistles like helicopters and motorcycles. I'd rather actually control my game rather than a few gimmicky vehicles.

Metroid Prime as revolutionary or not, I played it, it's an ok game but from AI to areas to vehicles to personality to tightness of controls, MP doesn't hold a candle to Halo.

still call GTA better only because of rediculous weapons and bell n whistles like helicopters and motorcycles.

No, not yet. I have a week, and I haven't made up my mind yet. But I probably will cause there's other stuff I'd rather play.

And to address Tippy, it's a good game with some depth, but I am in no way compelled to want to play it. It lacks an overall polish and I don't find the story that interesting. So despite some good gameplay, it just doesn't suck me in. So I'll return probably it, wait a while til it drops in price or they start popping up on the used racks.
