View Full Version : Which Console?
OK, Im burst'n w/cash & want to buy a new console. Im way to old to justify buying a console for myself, so I'll claim its for my nephews benefit when he drops by. [I'm a closet PC gamer & wanna get out into the gaming world a little more]
I hear XBX has some of the more mature titles [like that matters, I play video games for fun as well as substance]. Anyway, Ive always been a fan of Battle Tech fantasy: Mech Warriors! Also, I hear they added a sequel to a very old N64 title: Rogue Squadron?
GC is less expensive & has more titles that are also priced lower than the other two consoles, correct? This might be a good choice as my nephew [who I claim to be buying it for] likes some of the titles available Starfox [I think] & some of the Mario stuff?
PS2, now theres a console thats always intrigued me. I go into local video game stores [for the kids , ofcourse] & they are on display showing off their superb graphic detail [didnt they port Deus Ex to PS2?]. Also, like GC, I think their games are priced less than XBX?
While Ive been spending 90% of my last three gaming years on PC, I get the feeling I've been missing out on some good shooter titles for console only. My last console was N64, havnt played that in years.
So, care to offer feedback/suggestions on which of the three consoles I should buy first?
Thanks for help!

You should buy PS2 first. It's the BEST console since it can play DVDs, blah blah blah.
Plus, PS2 has a wide variety of game categories. A lot of stupid X-Box/Gamecube fan boys say that PS2 only supports sport games but that's not true. Ignore those fools. Honestly, it's Nintendo that does not support enough categories. Atleast 95% of the games they make are for ten year olds.
The graphics aren't displayed as good X-box's graphics but the gameplay is a lot better. Remember, graphics don't matter when the gameplay sucks.
Buy PS2.

You're a PC gamer, so you've already had access to most of Xbox's library, so it would be redundant to get xbox.
The game prices on all three systems are the same, but there seems to be more bargain bin stuff at $19 on xbox and Ps2.
If you liked Rogue Squadron, the Gamecube Launched with a sequel, Rogue Squadron II, which is incredible, and since it is nearly 2 years old, you can get it used for dirt cheap. When you take out the Deathstar, it is like playing the movie, it looks that good.
And this fall GC will have Rogue Squadron III, which will feature speeder bikes on Endor (I can't wait to chase a storm trooper through redwood trees.) The new Rogue Squadron will also feature two player co-op missions, two player dog-fights, and missions that include out-of-vehicle action.
And you can't miss out on Metroid Prime. With Gamecube dropping to $99 this fall (or so it is rumored) you can't go wrong.

It all depends on the individual, no console is perfect for everybody. Major target audiences in a nutshell:
GameCube: People who want some 1st-person shooters and sports games to be AVAILABLE, but don't see those as being their primary genres of choice. That role goes to adventure and goofball-fun games with great playability, even if it might get them "kiddie" taunts from people with esteem issues. They enjoy the fact that the system costs less than others, and does one thing (play games) very well rather than try to be an all-in-one "appliance".
XBox: People who play consoles mainly for ultra-realistic 1st person shooters (or because they get erections for nude DOA Volleyball cartoon characters), and therefore flock to the most advanced graphics specs available. Not really interested in "kiddie" games. Don't quite understand that online play is still a console generation away from hitting the big time, so they want the best online play system available NOW (which, admittedly, XBox Live certainly is).
PS2: The original surge of sales came from people who must have the very first thing out, even if better options are only months away in the pipeline. New purchases today are made by "casual gamers" (people attracted to the largest game library even if few of the titles are anything special), people too lazy to swap cables around when they want to play their old PS1 games, and people interested if having a DVD player that can't play VCD's or multi-region discs and that sells the remote control seperately.

I think the best way to sum up the differences was made by a buddy of mine who recently said, "The PS2 has the most games I want, the Gamecube has the games I want the most". Note that he didn't mention the XBox at all.

The graphics aren't displayed as good X-box's graphics but the gameplay is a lot better. Remember, graphics don't matter when the gameplay sucks.
If that's the case, why not just go eBay and buy a Sega Genesis? It has a huge library of games, while the controller and gameplay were awesome. The nearest runner-ups would be either the SNES or original NES. There's nothing the least bit special about PS1 or PS2 "gameplay", while the tradeoff of the PS2 being first-to-market is that its capabilites as a system are now quite aged compared what you can do with a Box or Cube.
Surprised & grateful for respones thus far [I didnt expect the quality, my shame  ].
Stevedperkins, thanks for pointing out pluses on GC & the low entry costs, I didnt know!]. Plus the news on Rogue Squadron appeals to the nostalgic gamer in me; though maybe arcadish, I loved the original.
Gagfly; Do I understand you correctly in that "The game prices on all three systems are the same"....I expected XBX games would costs mosts :D.
[Fragmaster is a dyed in the wool PC Gamer, surprised I am that w/your username you hav'nt found a title you like on GC, LOL!]
Thanks, all this helps me make a selection [likely Ill buy 2 consoles as GC is less expensive than I anticipate].

Well, at least I'm getting a good idea of who the vocal few are.

The Gameboy Advance SP may be a good choice too especially if:
playing/replaying a large selection of 16/32-bit classics sounds like fun. What other system has Castlevania, Metroid, Sonic, Mario, Zelda, Tekken, Doom, Tactics Ogre, Super Monkey Ball, Final Fantasy Tactics, Puyo Pop, and Phantasy Star? There are great new games, too, like Golden Sun and Advance Wars.
you're interested in games you can pick up and play -- for 10 minutes or for 10 hours.
your family doesn't want you to monopolize the TV or hibernate in your gaming den.
you don't have the time or interest to commit to online gaming or deeper games like Morrowind.

Hell, my gaming PC doesn't even work right now so my Xbox is a great alternative. There are a ton of racing games and some very good action games. Halo is great. Then you have a score of other PC-like hits like Max Payne, Splinter Cell. Metal Gear Solid 2 is good as well. You also have sleeper hits like Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Buffy blew me away because it so accurately portrays the series and its brand of humor. The fighting is a lot of fun, too.
The Xbox has stolen some of my love for PC Gaming. In fact I see the Nextbox stealing even more of that love. Its so similar yet so simple. Just turn it on and go.
WIth the low entry cost of GC, I'll pick that up for my ..er, nephew [ofcourse we will do Rogue Squadron on it together..cool!].
This purchase will provide me the cover I need to buy an XBX, so as not to appear too selfish an ..er adult. Yeah, thats it, GC & a XBX.
The Game Cube seems to be priced same everywhere w/little promos going on at the moment, so I'll grab one @ Best Buy or Target.
The XBX is a different story though, retailers offer a variety of promos bundled w/this unit. Costco has [had] one last week w/ 2 games for $215. Id like to get XBX w/Mech Warrior.
Anyone see any hot deals for either?
