View Full Version : Sony Playstation 3 vs. Nintendo N5 vs. Microsoft Xbox Next

I have composed a list of necessities the next generation of video game consoles must have.
1. Dolby Digital Surround Sound.
Perhaps this wasn't an important feature in 2001 when the Xbox and GCN were launched. And it obviously wasn't a very important feature in 2000 when the PS2 was launched.
2. 4 Controller Ports.
Seriously Sony, 4 controller ports has become the standard. 2 of them is an outrage.
3. Insane Graphics Engine.
We need next generation video gaming consoles that are capable of producing 5 zillion polygons per nanosecond.
Now lets take a look at the controllers.
1. Built in “rumble” capabilities.
2. A cord long enough to reach from my console to my couch. I had to buy an extension cord for my Cube’s controller. Of course I could have just bought a wireless controller, which BTW is an acceptable alternative.
And finally lets browse through the launch titles.
Xbox Next:
The Xbox Next needs to have a FPS that gains a cult-like following of gamers. This game must have mind boggling graphics, a well thought out single player mode, 4 person multiplayer, 4 person Co-Op, LAN capabilities, Online multiplayer and most importantly a frame rate that doesn’t slow down with all that pretty bump mapping on screen.
Sony Playstation 3:
Multitudes upon multitudes of 3rd party titles. Although most of them will be merely average (not quite worth 50 bucks) games, some of them will be excellent.
Nintendo N5:
The N5 will be launched with Super Mario Universe. This will be the platform game to end all platform games. There will be no more disputing the most innovative, most fun, king of all platformers. This will also scan 5 separate discs effectively creating the largest digital “world” ever devised. And this game will also have Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine included.
Does anyone else have any more necessities for the next generation gaming consoles to add to the list? And please keep the flaming to a minimum. Lets keep this a peaceful thread. After all none of these systems even exist yet.

I don't really have much to add as far as what needs to be added on a system. I guess a hard drive would be nice, but could boost the cost of the systems even more than what they'll be at launch.
The only thing that I am expecting is for the graphics to be a nice step up from the graphics of the current generation of systems. It was like that for the PS2 and Game Cube. They have shown that their current systems have a lot more muscle than their previous systems. People say that the PS2 is a minor upgrade from a PS1, but they couldn't be more wrong. The PS2 is way beyond the abilities of the PS1. Even more so for the N64 and Game Cube. So I want a nice size difference in graphics and other game-ish shtuff.
Either way, I know I'll buy one system for a while(it all depends on what launch titles are avaliable for each respected system), and then after a price drop, I'll buy me a second system. Or maybe I'll wait until all three come out, and then after a few months of new games being released, I'll pick which system to get, and stick with one while I load up on games for all three of the current systems, which will all mostly have cheap price tags, and there are a lot of games that I haven't played on all three systems. I have always believed that if I haven't played it yet, it's new to me...

I would add:
Wireless controllers as a standard. I have a feeling Nintendo will pack a Wavebird with their next system. Hopefully, MS and Sony will follow suit.
I think a hardrive will be a priority for the next gen systems. I doubt The Next XBox will take a step back and not have a hardrive. With Sony trying to find ways to get their Harddrive in gamers hands, it's a good bet they will have one in their next system. As far as Nintendo, I dunno what they would do, honestly.
I agree that 4 controller ports should be the norm now. You hear me, Sony? If they have 2 ports on their next system, that will not be a good sign.
I'm not sure about games. I do know if Nintendo wants to compete, they will have to have a good share of exclusive thrid party games (especially at launch) to go along with any 1st party games.I have a feeling there will be a Madden and SSX at launch for one of the new game systems, which isn't a bad thing.

I'm not buying anything next round of consoles unless it is backwards compatibile.
Harddrive is okay, but with the way that corners are cut in order to keep profit margins acceptable, I'd be nervous about the HD.

Keep Shiggy as far away from controller design as possible.

Why so? If he designed the Game Cube controller, then I say throw more power to him!! The GCN controller(especially if you are talking about the Wavebird) is the most innovative controller since, well, the original Dual Shock.

But games like Tony Hawk and SSX are nearly unplayable next to the dual shock. If Nintendo would create a pad with Sega and Capcom giving out advice ( yeah right ) it would be a trillion times better than Shiggy creating it for the new Mario game. Plus, I love fightng games. And the Cube pad aint so great for them.
I agree about the wavebird... The single coolest controller ever designed, aside from a horribly placed Z button.

Understood. As a gamer that has only one sports game(NBA2K2-PS2) out of about forty or so games, I've yet to experience the assness that is sports on the GCN, and I probably never will.
I was trying to think of some more things to include for the next-gen systems, and I got to wandering if any other systems can do the multi-system connectivity dealy? I think it's called LAN or something like that. I know the Cube can, because that's supposedly one of the main draws in MK-DD. It would be neat if all next-gen systems offered this for multi-player games for the gamers that don't want or like online gaming or simply don't have it in their area(like me, boo-hoo).http://216.40.249.192/s/contrib/edoom/let_it_all_out.gif I wouldn't mind this, because I have friends that have the same systems and games as me sometimes, so it would be neat to have some killer tournaments during our smoke-out parties.
Keep Shiggy as far away from controller design as possible.
Shocked that I agree on this point. Keep the shig-meister as far away as possible on all aspects of hardware design. Nintendo as a gaming power has slid steadily downwards since miyamoto-san become the hardware guru.
How many IGN head to head's have I read where the idiosyncratic gc contorller has been a sore point with the gc version of a multi-platform game. Well, too many to ignore.
1, Wireless will be a key watchword for next-gen systems. Wireless controllers should be standard as well as wireless ethernet.
2. Mass storage. Current low-capacity mem cards are nothing more than a major profit center for the companies involved. Hopefully MS's introduction of a hard drive into a gaming console will move things along. Whatever the hell happened to nintendo's SD cartridges that were supposed to offer 64 times the capacity of those 59 cards. Whether we're talking hard drive or a large capacity media format, and we're talking gigs of capacity here, not megs, it's going to be needed not only for saves but also more importantly downloadable content.
3. Multi-media capabilities. Get with it Nintendo, nobody's buying this we only want to make a pure gaming console crap, you cheap bastards. Cd-ripping, dvd playback standard along with other mm functions need to be standard.
4. Backwards compatability or the holy grail of gaming. So far, only sony has delivered and has committed to it. Will Ms be able to? I'm no programmer, but if the software guys were doing a lot of direct calls to hardware in the games, MS may have problems in this area, seeing as how MS will be changing hardware partners. Nintendo, I would be nothing short of amazed if they can pull it off or would even bother trying. Right now, this is a HUGE sony advantage.
5. Online. Better haver some strategy out there and some type of infrastructure, otherwise you're toast. Online isn't the key, but it's one of the pieces of the puzzle to winning the system wars. Ignore at your own peril.
6. Support for HDTV. More and more sets are capable of far more than just 480i. 720p widescreen should be the new emergent standard. That means beefed up video display processores and graphics chips to handle the larger demands. Progressive scan should be standard on all games.
7. 5.1 surround sound. Standard across the board with provisions for 6.1 and 7.1 sound as well.
8. Memory. And lots of it. The achilles heel of all current videogame systems to date. Nothing like a graphics bottleneck to screw up the works. The emotion engine is a far more sophisticated piece of transistor than a garden variety p3, but when you're trying to suck porridge thru a straw like the ps2 has to with its 4mb of vram, well, all that electronics just goes to waste. Memory, memory, memory and please leave room for memory expansion. About the only thing the n64 did right was include a mem expansion slot.
9. Da Games. Going nowhere without the games. Less presentation, more game. Less watching, more playing.

The new systems should definately be equiped to give you the most out of your home theater set up. I mean, games are now competing against movies and such, well give us the features.
Backwards compatibilty is probably going to be rough. Sony has already made the statement of including it... read it in one of the mags that had an interview with one of the sony guys. Sony might again be the only company to offer it due to hardware licenses with Nintendo and MS. They have ATI and Nvidia tieing them down.
Find a way to make FPS games control good on a console.

Alright, this is what the new systems need.
Personally, what i'm looking for in a new console is the ability to be backwards compatible, act as my home entertainment system, have top notch graphics, and have a built in vacuum cleaner.
Also, i would be nice for the developers to add a dishwashing mechanism, dusting service, and laudry cleaning capabilities.
Oh, and the device can't be any bigger than the current Cube.
Now, i won't get greedy and demand the console to cook me dinner or anything like that, that would be just too unrealistic.

some good games would be nice
Better physics, better A.I.

Backwards compatibility is overrated. I don't care to play dumb old games that I finished a long time ago.
What would I like to see?
Voice messages between games
web browsing on ALL consoles(come on, even DREAMCAST had a browser)
more of what the Xbox is doing as far as being on the cutting edge leaving everyone else in the dust.

Damn, the way u guys talk about your fantasy consoles I'm surprised u don't want them to wash your car. Be practical, if Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft read this form and surprisingly did a QUATER of what u guys demand...the next day u guys would be posting forms about how expense each of console is.
Now that I have ruined your fun ^_^ I got a couple suggestions/demands of my own
*Clears throat
1.) Focus mainly on gaming, this includes 4 player action, online play etc. Don't get distracted and sidetrack to checking your email or chatting online. What I mean to say is, lets focus the entire budget on creating a console that delivers something above and beyond our expectation.
Look at it this way: would you want a $400 console that has: 128 -bit capacities, checking email, chatting on the web, making toast
OR
A $400 console that has 512 bit of power and focuses all of its capabilities of delivering the best games u ever played
Basically, why not put all of our eggs in one basket and instead of running around bells and whistles...if I want to surf the web and chat, I could very easily go buy a $150 computer (used) that can do just that
As consumers we forget the whole reason why we grew to love and enjoy videogames.... because of the videogames!
That is my only request (besides with this logic u get more for your money)

How about a 5 year (the life of the console) warrantee on the hardware and software as well? My controller that got chewed on by my roommate's ferrets should of course be covered by this! While using it your character somehow now permanently veers to the left. I always give this controller to the least video game inclined person during 4-player games. They usually complain but I (along with the other 2 players) just laugh at their horrible gaming skills. Because they don't really play video games often they suck anyways! I know, I know……this makes me an evil person. =)

A standard 5-year warranty would be sweet! I haven't had any problems with my PS2 since I got it, but I've heard a lot of horror stories from people who say their system only plays certain PS2 games, or just PS1 games, or just DVD's. Hell, I have a Genesis that plays better than some PS2's I've seen! But then, it might be because a cartridge-based system doesn't have as many moving parts.
Someone said about having all systems come with wireless controls. I'm with that also. But they have to be Wavebird quality.

How about the introduction of the console expansion pack? I can think of many games that could benefit from this.
