View Full Version : A long way off became down the road and today is that reality

Well, with FIVE games I really wanted to play right now (Resistance, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Unreal Tournament 3, Uncharted and Heavenly Sword) and Metal Gear Solid 4 on the horizon, I plunked down the $400 plus for games, extended warranty and some extras and picked up a PS3 40-gigger today.
I mainly went with the 40 gig model for a few very specific reasons.
1) I don't need the extra HDD space. The HDD on the 360 is plenty big for what I do, so double on the PS3 is more than enough. And I can always swap down the road if I need to.
2) PS2 backward-compatibility is a non-issue for me since I have a PS2 less than a year old right now.
3) It has all the important stuff like wireless networking, 2 USB ports, HDMI, fiber-optic audio, etc. I couldn't care less about memory card ports since I won't be using those anytime soon and any pictures, etc. I would want to transfer, I can do it from an outside device I already own.
4) I don't really like Motorstorm very much and to me, the $100 more over the 40 gig is mainly made up of this game.
So I had the dough for two games and went with Unreal Tournament 3 and Uncharted Drake's Fortune. I've been dying to play UT3, and reading about it in the newest OXM was killing me. Uncharted is by Naughty Dog and after watching a video running on a PS3 kiosk, I really wanted to play this one.
I honestly don't see the "graphical prowess" of the PS3 as anything much better than the 360. The two are only a level playing field at this moment IMO. Not a bad thing, since the 360 knocks my socks off regularly. But Uncharted and UT3 are both visually stunning games on par with the best of the 360 library and thats a damn good thing IMO.
Downloads seem to take forever over the PSN network compared to the 360 or Wii. Setup was easy enough, everything auto-detected just fine. It just seems slow. I had an agonizingly long update to the 2.10 firmware.
The Blu-Ray playback is superb. High-quality picture running on my television at 720p (native/default resolution) yeilds a picture that is noticably above the standard DVD version of Spider-Man 3. Spidey 3 for free plus the coupon for five more free Buena Vista flicks is pretty cool.
With my purchase of the PS3, I picked up UT3 on it instead of waiting on the 360 version. More than likely, I will pick up Soul Calibur 4 and Devil May Cry 4 for the PS3, given they are comparable across both platforms. Resident Evil 5 is too far off, but will more than likely be a PS3 purchase. These games are traditionally on the Playstation systems, so I tend to continue buying franchise titles in that manner.
I will not-however-be buying a second Sixassis controller. I don't like the one I have. It feels way too light and has no rumble. The new Force Feedback models should be in store soon, so the wait is no biggie.
The time was just right. 2006 was a disaster and 2007 got just over a handful of quality games worth buying a PS3 for. With all the stuff in 2008 including MGS4, GT5 Prologue, God of War 3, Tekken 6 and some great multiplats, I was willing to go for it.

Dude it was freakin' inevitible that you got a PS3.
I Love mine and can not stop lovin' the damn thing. OH MY GOD IT'S SO SHINY IT HURTS!
Try playing COD4 on it it is sweet. I also love hooking my PSP up to it with the remote play. It is weird playing a PS1 game on it but it is still cool. If you stick a CD in the PS3 you can listen to it thru the remote play also it's just neat.
I can't wait for the update that allows you to download your blue rays to the PSP that will be sweet.
I have not played Unreal or Uncharted yet but I look forward to it.
Hope you enjoy I have.

Hopefully you get online with it, and get Burnout Paradise for the Ps3. I've been hooked on the eight player online demo, can't wait for the full game! Download the demo and see for yourself. I've never been a Burnout fan, but this one has hooked me.
What's your online tag?

We should get some kind of VGR Xbot/Sony Fanboy Clan online thing going... says the guy that only dabbles in online. I supposed the options are Warhawk and first person shooters right now. Oh and racers. I think it was PapaSmurf who was urging me to buy Warhawk. So if anything like that happens, I'm in.

Well, I predicted it, but I don't recall setting a time frame. 78 is your typical consumer whore, the guy buys everything. Why he purchased an extended warranty is beyond me. Now, that's a waste of money with the ps3. The ps3, if you have problems, you're going to see them early on, the machine is not going to die prematurely from normal wear and tear like a 360. And unlike MS, sony upped their warranty a while back to a full year without being forced to do it, because their product was breaking down left and right.
But, hey, its his money.

I don't find extended warranties to be a waste of money at all. The Wii-widely considered to be the most stable and hardy console of the current gen crapped on me when the fan went out. Things happen. That $20 or whatever at Wally-World for a full 2-year replacement guarantee after the 1-year manufacturer warranty expires isn't a bad deal.
I'm not a consumer whore as you say. I've said all along that when Sony gets their act together, puts out rumble controllers, lowers the price and has some games worth playing, I would buy the damn thing. There isn't a Sony system that I HAVEN'T owned.
Regardless, the only exclusives coming this year that I have a keen eye on are MGS4, GT5 Prologue and Tekken 6. Not saying that is ALL the exclusives I may/may not buy, but that's all I'm eyeing right now. I will probably also pick up Resident Evil, Devil May Cry and Soul Calibur on the PS3 since this is their "native" system IMO.
For all your BS MassiWhacko, my 360 is running strong. 3rd party games are better on the 360 about 90% of the time and the graphic difference between the two is not noticable to me. Both systems running in 720p look nearly identical quality-wise, artistic expression aside. Unreal Tournament 3 and Gears are both powered by the UE3 engine and I don't see anything that blows me away on the PS3 more than Gears on the 360. And don't give me that "PS3 games are 1080p" bull because I currently own FOUR PS3 games, all with 720p as the max resolution except Gaiden which lists 1080p as well. Anything else is upscaling, just as 360 games upscale.

Congrats on your PS3 purchase, 78.
I found the best time to download things from PSN is early in the morning. If there's something worth getting (like a demo), I usually get them on Friday mornings before work. It seems to download faster, probably due to less people.

Thanks RBH. Though some might want to make a big deal about it in a negative light and call me flip-flopper, goombah, whatever...Gad and I as well as AOE Apocalypse and I talked many times over the last year. And I've stated in numerous threads that when Sony lowers the price, gets a few GOOD games I want to play out and releases a Dual Shock 3 controller, I would indeed buy one. The price dropped, DS3 controllers are on their way very soon and there is five games I wanted to play with stuff like MGS4 and Tekken 6 being upcoming "Must-haves" for me. Oh, and God of War 3 of course. :D
But anyway, I picked up Ninja Gaiden Sigma last night as well as Resistance. Resistance pretty much feels how I knew it would. It's a very competent shooter with some very nice weapons, decent albeit not "the best" graphics but plenty of fun. I look forward to delving deeper into it when I have the time as well as spending some more time with Gaiden. I play a few matches of UT3 here & there which is good for me, I like a "pick up & play" game that I"m not tied to. I'm going to wait until the weekend when I REALLY have the time to delve more into Uncharted. I loved the wetsuits at the beginning that say "Ottsel" on them. For those not "in-the-know" an Ottsel is what Daxter is from the Jak & Daxter games. Nice little nod to their previous games.
I have a $15 credit on Paypal, so I will probably go hunting for a copy of Heavenly Sword there. Again, I said that I wanted to play this game when it came out and that I would wait until it drops in price. If I can snag it for $40 (besides me credit) then I would consider that a good price.

I know what you mean. After initially being uninterested in the Wii and barely mentioning it in the past year, I ended up trading towards one yesterday. It was good timing too, since the snow/freezing rain in my area closed my job for the day (yippee) and I have time to see what's up with it.
I have a feeling MGS4, GTA4, and Mercs 2 (more than likely all PS3 titles for me) are going to come out around the same time as each other.
Is the Dual Shock 3 close to being released? I got an update on Folklore that added a Vibration On/Off function in the options menu. Unless I end up needing a 2nd controller for the system, I'm going to just stick with the Shock-less 3.

There are dozens of little touches in this game that I haven't really seen done this well. Little things like how the clothes become wet, or how a corpse will be floating in the water, but if you shoot it with a grenade it sinks. Things like how when you are too close to a grenade going off the games sound mimics tinnitus and hearing loss, and it was so damned good the first time it happened I thought it was MY ears, not just a sound effect.
I haven't enjoyed a game in the same way I'm enjoying Uncharted since Stranger's Wrath.

I didn't like Uncharted that much. Couple of problems there was a lot of shooting I mean a whole lot. I guess the dude raider comments got to me because maybe that's what I was expecting and the amount of shooting in the game really through me off. I kept waiting for the shooting to die down and get some real exploring going on but it never happened.
And the combat I didn't like. You get rewards for headshots. I remember hating the aiming thinking damn Why am I not getting head shots? Then all of a sudden I get the 50 headshot reward. I was like what??? So I guess I was landing my headshots. But the pirates with the Bandannas would take several shots to the head. And sometime it would be one and they would drop. Really weird. Also there was no real visceral feel to the combat I can't help but think maybe it was because of the lack of vibration. But you never really feel like you're in the sh!t in this game. And while I agree the ear ringing of the grenade is really cool. The weak sound effects of the guns really sucked everything felt like cap guns.
Plus the entire game was super linear. The guy is supposed to be a treasure hunter but I felt no real feeling of exploration through out the game.
Typical Naughty game nail all the little touches but the actual meat of the gameplay could use a lot of work.

For whatever reason, I was just never really into the Ratchet & Clank games. I owned the first three, but tired of them quickly. The characters just never "clicked" with me.
Being the anal-rententive person that I am, I had to finish buying my "five" titles that I wanted to play with the last purchase being Heavenly Sword. Right now, HS and Uncharted are getting the most playtime from me with me throwing in Unreal Tourney 3 for a match here & there and Ninja Gaiden Sigma I play about a level a night. Resistance hasn't gotten as much playtime as the rest so far, but that's not because it's a bad game. I just had to prioritize.:)
It was a good time to pick a PS3 up for me. Not much coming out in January...hell...about NOTHING new in January. I should have at least two of these games wrapped by February 6th when Devil May Cry 4 shows up.

I haven't seen an "official" release date for the Dual Shock 3. The Japanese version has been out a bit and is readily available on eBay for around $50 + shipping. According to everything I have read, it is 100% compatible with all PS3 systems. I'm not in that big of a hurry for a DS3 controller, but I may pick up a Japanese model because the white one is sweet looking.

I have to wholeheartedly agree with you Gad. I too am "blown away" by Uncharted. The attention to detail that Naughty Dog put in is nothing short of astonishing.
Running in 720p, the game looks simply stunning. Drake's facial animations are incredible, but Naughty Dog didn't stop there. The way he stumbles and moves like a real, flesh & blood person is where I think games need to be heading. We are approaching the point of diminishing returns for graphics, so it's the animations and other subtle nuances of the games that need to be improved upon. The best two examples of fluid, life-like movement so far are Uncharted and Assassin's Creed.
I also noticed how Drake's clothes take on a darker appearance when he becomes wet, just as clothing does in real-life. And I laughed out loud when an enemy threw a grenade by me and Drake says "Oh $h!t!" I think my favorite spot in the game so far was the U-Boat. Discoveries of old WWII wrecks and things like when they found the Titanic have always held a mysterious, spooky and enthralling hold over me. I felt this when playing Uncharted.
Naughty Dog has always been one of my top developers. I feel that they eclipsed Nintendo with the Crash Bandicoot games and the Jak games were nothing short of superb, with the only thing holding them back being the limits of the PS2 hardware. I truly cannot wait for a sequel to Uncharted.

Force feedback would have added a lot, I agree.
However, the linearity is a plus to me in this game. I don't think every game has to be open-world exploration, and Uncharted would lose its intensity if it were a non-linear open world game. The story and the action and playing through it is intense and well balanced; I know I wouldn't be getting pulled through this game like I am if it were a wander-around "do stuff in a random order" type of game.
Headshots, I've noticed no problems there. That's one of the things I love is if you shoot someone in the knee they hop around; basically, the reactions and the falls of the enemie bodies seems very realistic and cool. And you know when you nail a headshot dead on. . . not glancing off the edge of the skull but right in the head. . . there's a very satisfying burst of blood and the body goes down in a way you know they aren't getting back up.
I will say, I don't play many games of this type, so I'm no afficionado. This game is probably "light" in the same way Stranger's Wrath was, and Eternal Darkness. Neither of those is considered all that deep in gameplay, but for me the polish, the story, and the fun factor are off the charts with these three games. I wasn't going to get this game at all because it just didn't seem like my type of game (I dismissed it as stereotypical macho realism), but I got a Gamefly gift certificate for Xmas, so I figured what the hell. Damned glad I got Uncharted.

I don't think it needs to be an open world game. But I would've liked more exploration during the levels. Basically I thought this was an adventure game when it's really a 3rd person shooter.
But personally I think the shooter mechanics fall short so the game loses a bit there for me.
At least they told a complete story with a real ending and being that he's a treasure hunter you can have as many of these games as you want without B.S. cliffhanger endings.

Yeah I was hoping for more exploration as opposed to the continuous shooting, as the shooter dynamics weren't really all that amazing. However, the story was just so enthralling, and the graphics and levels were just so good that I didn't mind so much. It seems whenever you started to get bored of one locale they moved onto something completely different. Plus, the cutscenes were just pure brilliance. I looked forward to the next cutscene with great enthusiasm, so that kept me going. In fact, I played for 6 hours straight after playing the first 2 hours sporadically. The game was just great overall.
