View Full Version : Who needs a next-gen console anyway?

After playing COD4, Crysis, and BioShock on my monster desktop for two weeks, the computer gods decided that was enough for me, and so when I took my computer in to the shop to get a USB slot fixed, the technician went and did something that fried my video card. So with no PC gaming possible for me, I turned to the console I had hooked up to the TV - my GameCube. And honestly? I'm having a lot more fun with the thing than I did with any other system this year.

Super Smash Bros. Melee is just a sublime multiplayer experience. Resident Evil is such a fun and engrossing single player game too. Metroid Prime is also fun, though I haven't been playing much. Prince of Persia is another of those gems that I can replay over and over again. Eternal Darkness is a game I have waiting in the wings once I'm done with the other games I'm playing right now, and Soul Calibur 2 would probably be on my most-played list if the C-stick on both my controllers wasn't busted.

So yeah. Who needs a next-gen console? If I were taking my GameCube back to the States with me I'd probably buy Resident Evil 0, maybe Twilight Princess and Metroid Prime 2. I've also got Super Mario Sunshine if I really need a platformer, as well as Tales of Symphonia and Baten Kaitos (1 and 2) if I'm itching for an RPG. I'm bringing back Dark Cloud 2, God of War, and Metal Gear Solid 2 to play on my PS3 anyway, and I'll probably end up buying a bunch of PS2 games this year (I've got my eye on Persona 3 and Shadow Hearts). As far as last-gen PC games, Fahrenheit is on my list, as is Shadow of Destiny, and No One Lives Forever has been begging for a replay for a while now.

I'll probably get a bunch of games for my PS3 too, as well as finish Assassin's Creed. But overall, I'm having so much fun with last-gen games that I'm in no hurry to get plugged into the current gen. Except for COD4. That game is awesome.

Where Nintendo games are concerned I agree wholeheartedly with you bro. About 70 percent of my Wii time has been used for Gamecube gaming, Battalion Wars, RE4 (superlative game), Pikmin 1 and 2, etc. The Gamecube has some damned fine games.

Sorry to hear about your video card troubles :cryin:

I have 3 PCs all with 256MB video cards. Once I had an issue with a card where it played fine and then one day it was hanging up the system and causing all kinds of problems for reasons unknown. I pulled the card out and swapped it with another machines video card and then it worked fine, the other pulled card also worked fine when I put it into the troubled machine and everything was back to working fine for all three PCs. That was a few years ago and all three machines and cards still work fine....and I was damned sure the first video card was fried, but obviously it was fine but developed issues with the PC it was in. Basically, when you're pretty sure of something, it may still turn out not as you thought where PCs are concerned.

Well according to the store the technician didn't do anything wrong (which I don't believe), but they said they're going to replace my video card, which is a GeForce 8800 GTS 320 MB. I thought they were discontinued, but they say the card is just backordered. We'll see how it turns out.

Sorry to hear that. Well even if they won't admit wrongdoing at least they're taking responsibility to replace the card.

And yea, instead of waiting for the definitive next generation console rpg I could go back and get the ton of rpgs for PS2 I haven't played. And I'm getting a lot of use out of the PSP. I'm carrying around Jeanne D Arc, Breath of Fire 3, The Warriors and Brave Story in my backpack. Typically I play at work when it gets slow, but the holidays was nuts so work was pretty crazy. But now things are back to normal and I have more downtime.

Speaking of last generation the sequel (Persona 4) to my favorite game of 2007, Persona 3 is coming to the PS2. I'm willing to bet this was the SMT title listed for the PS3 since 2005. If the Japanese get it this year, then we won't see it probably til 2009 so the 'ole PS2 still has some life in it.... for better or worse.

Btw, I sent Sony an email a few days ago. I mentioned that there was something in the range of 800 games published for the PS1 in North America alone. So I inquired as to why there are only a dozen available on the PSN network. No word so far.

If you are Gamecubing, you gotta do Pikmin 1 & 2. This was an example of a sequel that was better than the original.

The multiplayer modes in 2 where so cool, but what they really needed was online play. If we don't get a Pikmin sequel with online challenge modes for the Wii, I will consider it the biggest dissapointment of the generation.

And I need a next-gen console, bra. It's like saying you don't need a PS2 because you have a Game Cube. Sure, there are games to play, but there aren't all the games to play that you would want to.

I need a next gen console. Because non HD last gen visuals will literally cause me to have seizures.

Really it does.
