Nintendo: Wavebird no longer shipping to stores

by Alexander Sliwinski Jan 2nd 2008 11:45AM

If it were any other time the death of the sublime wireless Wavebird controller designed for Nintendo's Gamecube would have gone by with a tear and some good memories, but with Smash Bros. Brawl just around the corner it feels more like bad timing. A Nintendo customer service representative told GoNintendo that there aren't plans to restock Wavebird controllers in stores again; however, regular wired Gamecube controllers will continue to be available.

We've been advocating the use of the Wavebird for anyone that plans to use a Gamecube controller when Smash Bros. Brawl releases next month. Might be time to visit the local pawn shop and see if Wavebirds are available there, or just accept the use of the Wiimote, Classic Controller or the wired Gamecube controller – ewwww, wires!

I've been looking for a Wavebird for awhile now. But to be honest with you, I had completely given up trying to find them at retail; I thought they had stopped making them awhile ago.

I've been wanting to give Eternal Darkness and Metroid Prime another try, and give Battalion Wars a try but period, but I'm not getting a(nother) GameCube, and especially not a Wii, unless I have a Wavebird.

I think the only place you can find a Wavebird anymore is ebay. And I hate ebay.

Surely you can find a used Wavebird somewhere?

I kept mine, thank god.

Regarding Eternal Darkness, its one of those games where having vibration was a plus. . . a couple of the hidden secrets in the game you sense "psychically" i.e. tiny vibrations. If you didn't have vibration, maybe the game gives a visual clue instead, I don't know. Wavebirds weren't out yet, I don't think, when I played Eternal Darkness.

Hmmm... good to know about ED. Thanks.

Regarding used Wavebirds: Guess what I saw today? At one of the GameStops I stopped in tonite they had two used Wavebirds in stock.(!) Thing is... they were gunky and nasty. :( I just got this awful image of them being covered with all kinds of diseases. Ugh.

Also, while I say I want to try ED again, I'm kind of talking out my azz. Kind of. Because I can't find the game anywhere! I have Battalion Wars, and MP is easy enough to pick up; it's everywhere... but ED is gone (MacReady)! I look for that game every time I step into one of the vg specialty retailers - GameStop; EB; GameRush; GameCrazy - and I've been looking for it for a long while now, and no one ever has it. You frackers talked about it too much; and so everybody that happened by here said, 'hmmmm, I should check that game out', and they went out and snatched up all the copies! #@$%.

I have ED and STILL haven't finished it. I'm still at that part with the architect/artist Gad. I know you told me that chapter has a really heavy ending, but I can't for the life of me get back into the groove of that game. I'm replaying Resident Evil surprisingly, I don't know why I don't feel like finishing ED. I still haven't finished Metroid Prime either. I just got to the ice level.

Definitely play Battalion Wars! It's one of the most fun games on Gamecube. Not very deep or complicated, it's just crazy action packed fun from start to finish. It's relatively short as well, one of those little games that flies under the radar because it isn't an uber, blow you away super game.

You'll find yourself replaying missions not to improve your performance but just to goof off and run around blowing up stuff and flying around in jets.

Of course don't go in thinking this is a GOTY nomination. But rather a game that got mediocre reviews, and nobody ever talks about. And I'm sure you'll agree with me that BW is the most underrated game on the Gamecube.

..for pimpage. I think he had 574 posts wherein he talked up Pikmin...

Yes, I know.(!) This game is all you've talked about for the last two-three years. It's at your behest that I (will eventually) play this game.

I'm giving you a second chance. I give everybody a second chance it seems.

Probably more! When you called me "Timmy" from South Park, I've never laughed so hard (or so wryly) for being nailed so perfectly. But what can I see, I freaking love that game.

I don't know which I've pimped more though, really, Culdcept, Animal Crossing, or Pikmin. I got obsessed with those games more than anything. If I'd have been a posting online back when Gran Turismo was new on the Ps1, it would have been my "Pikmin" of that time. Oh yeah, and Advance Wars. When I get obsessed with a game, I go bonkers. But it doesn't happen that often; most games are really cool for awhile and then they just start to lose their magic well before I reach the end.

574 is a typo. I meant to say 1,574. :wink5:

Your latest thing seems to be Motorstorm. Everytime I read a pro-Motorstorm post from you I think I made a mistake and clicked on an old thread. But then I check the date, and sure enough... he's still playing it.(!)
