was checking out Eurogamer and came across this article: New Year's Resolution, 2008 (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=89721)

So that's it. Another year over. And what have you done? If you're reading (or, indeed, writing) this, the chances are you'll have spent most of it arguing with strangers on the internet about games you haven't played yet. Just like last year, and the year before that, and the year before that. So in the spirit of the New Year, perhaps it's time to make a change? Perhaps it's time to, I dunno, stop arguing with strangers on the internet about games you haven't played yet. A daunting prospect for anybody, I know, but here to help you are some ready-made resolutions for you to follow, to help make 2008 an even better year than 2007.

1. I will spend less time arguing on the internet about review scores.

Sure, arguing about review scores is one of the most entertaining things about videogames short of actually playing the things. But it's also one of the most pointless things, too. It's like arguing with the ref: you are not going to be able to change a review score by simply complaining about it (topical gag: unless you're a site advertiser, of course, boom boom!). And in any case, it doesn't actually matter whether you're able to change a review score. Because whatever review score someone else has decided to give a game, it's not going to affect your enjoyment of that game, unless you let it. So, next time you think about arguing with strangers about an arbitrary number that someone else has plucked out of the air to go at the end of their latest videogame review, try the following mental exercise: instead of slamming down your keyboard till the keys fall off, and then firing off a hastily composed forum post threatening real-life violence, simply take a deep breath and imagine that the number in question is a different one - and it can be any number you like. There. Isn't the world a better place already?

2. I will spend less time arguing on the internet full stop.

Sure, arguing on the internet is... Actually, no. Arguing on the internet is not entertaining at all. It's just dispiriting and pointless, generating an unhappy cycle of bitterness and disappointment. So stop it. You can't expect people on the internet to listen to balanced or rational argument, and you can't expect trolls not to troll. So instead of fuelling this unhappy festival of cynicism and grief, try saying something nice about a game you like, instead of saying something bad, about a game you don't like. I'm not going to argue with you about this, because you know I'm right.

3. I won't care what console is best.

Instead, I'm just going to buy all of them. Or buy one of them and be happy with it. Because really, when you think about it, they're all brilliant, aren't they? Whether it's Super Mario Galaxy on the Wii, or Uncharted on the PS3, or Halo 3 on the Xbox 360 (or whatever your favourite game is, on whatever platform it's on), they've all got something going for them, haven't they? So who cares which one's sold more units according to whichever set of numbers the console manufacturers are currently lying about? Why care about which one's got the most Blu-ray, or biggest gestural technology, or the largest internet? Just play the games and enjoy them, because they're fun.

4. I will make my mum play a videogame.

In fact, they're so much fun, why not share the love? Why not make your mum, or your dad, or your sister, or your teacher, play a game? Imagine what it would be like if everyone could make just one person who hasn't played a game play a game. The world would be a better place. There'd be fewer wars, less famine, and everyone would stop blaming everything on games. Or not. But they might enjoy it at least, so, y'know, what the heck, eh?

5. I will play a board game.

And not on Xbox Live, or my computer. I will take a board out of a box, and put all the pieces on it, and learn the rules, and play it with real-life people in a real-life room. Because, you might be surprised to learn, boardgames can be just as much fun as videogames. And if you're struggling to know where to start, start with games like Catan, or Pit, or Rapidough.

6. I will play a game I don't think I'll like.

Because, hey, you never know, you might like it. If you don't like RPGs, try to play one. If you don't like first-person shooters, try to play one. If you don't like games developed in Japan, or in America, or in Lewisham, or wherever, try one. If you've got an abiding antipathy towards games in which you repeatedly press buttons to smash things up, try to play a game in which you smash things up. Except, for this to work, you need to suspend your disbelief. Instead of spending the first hour telling yourself that you don't like the game, try telling yourself that you do. Another mental exercise to help make the world a better place.

7. I will play the games that I buy.

And not let them stack up, still in their cellophane wrapping, taking up yet more space that I don't have, because I'm too busy arguing on the internet.

8. I will walk away when a game gets difficult.

Instead of contributing to the videogame violence debate by smashing up my controllers whenever things get a little tough, I will take a deep breath and walk away. Because, yes, videogame developers are idiot know-nothings, who want to ruin my life, but I'm not going to let them. I'm not going to put any more holes in my wall, or controllers into remission. Instead I'm going to walk away, calm down, and then return and try again. Or not, actually. If a game's too difficult to enjoy, I'm not going to let it beat me. I'm going to beat it, by putting it back in its box and playing the next one. Because, really, seriously, there isn't any shame in that.

So there you are. Follow those simple resolutions and the world will be a better place next year, and your life will be a better one. Or you could just ignore all of these and carry on as you were. In which case, see you here next year, after another year of arguing with strangers about games you haven't played!

much of what i highlighted applies to certain individuals :D how will SW survive if we all took this to heart? :p

Interesting!!

1. I don't think we do too much of that here. Sure people use review scores to make a point but I think most here tend to get into the meat of the game vs just arguing about the number. And I like counter points to reviews.

2. Hehe I'm working on some animation (Anime Studio is awesome) that talks about this very thing.

3. All I ever cared about is that a console has a ton of games I like. So far, all the consoles and handhelds disappointed me in 2007 in that regard. The good to crap ratio usually favors crap just because of the sheer number of games, but way too many pedigree and high profile games managed to be average or below average.

4. My mom and dad play the sh!t outta slots at the casino. I suppose that counts. I might get my mom to play a game of bowling on Wii. Dad ain't having it though.

5. I played a board game last week. Scene It. Pretty cool game. I know less about movies than I thought I did.

6. I do all the time, especially when friends come over and things get all competitive. I played quite a few FPS just because there are so damn many. I actually ended up liking one.

7. Folken!!

8. Oddly enough, if a section is giving me a really tough time and I sit it down and come back to it the next day, I breeze through it and I can't for the life of me figure out why it was so hard the day before.

9. My personal resolution is I'm going back to only buying games in my niche. Action adventure and rpgs. My time is getting more and more limited, my budget is tighter and games are too expensive to blow the wads of cash I have in the past.

Getting my true gaming start in the NES era, I don't think I can play a game these days that would be too hard. They just don't make them that way anymore.

My only real gaming resolution is to play more of my older games, instead of just playing them once and then leaving them for months untouched. skate needs some serious love, as does Viva Pinata, and about ten more games that I would like to rip up a few more times.

9. I will buy games.

*Gasp*

Does that mean "not pirated?" :p I was really surprised to see the price for legit games more expensive than in the U.S.

1 I will realize that I don't have to have every game day 1 (already started this)

2. I will spend more time playing games than.... reading about games, arguing/talking about games on the internet.

3 WE (VGR) will finally set up real VGR gamer nights across the platforms we play online PC/360/PS3 and will Mario Kart and Smash is released even the Wii.

edit

4. I will not buy a new game until I'm ready to play it. No more buying games and letting them sit in the case.

5. I will not buy a used game for $5 cheaper than the new version.

My resolutions:

1) I will buy less games

2) I will buy very little (if any) games from the following stores: Gamestop, Toys R Us, GameRush (only if it's a trade in) and Circuit City (unless CC has a really good sale, which I'll probably just do a price match at Best Buy).

3) I will not buy any used games

4) I will buy no more than 3 handheld games, including God of War.

5) I will no longer care about the Devil May Cry vs Ninja Gaiden vs God of War comparisons, regardless of the fact that two of these are coming out this year.

6) I will continue to rely on my own instincts more than a game site's review for a game.

7) Though I will buy less games, the ones I do get will be day one games, unless traded for. I'm old (30 yrs old as of a week ago) and impatient, and I don't have time for stores (Circuit City & Gamestop at times) to get in games on Thursday when better stores get them in on Wednesday (Best Buy). :)

8) I will continue to have low expectations for most of the games I'm interested in. If I don't expect much, I can enjoy it more and really feel like it's worth my time. I don't need every title I'm interested in to have AAA, killer-app, or GOTY potential.

9) I will not worry about the RROD for the 360.

10) I will continue to enjoy this gen of gaming like it's my last gen of gaming.

10) I will continue to enjoy this gen of gaming like it's my last gen of gaming. What?!?! Are you saying that this is your last generation of gaming? Are you done after this one?

AND BTW, Happy Birthday!! I actually just turned 30 on Pearl Harbor Day. Woo-hoo!!!

And if the truth is being spoken around the webs(it usually isn't) then God 3 will be out this year also.

Thanks. When was Pearl Harbor Day, btw? Dec 10th or 11th?

I won't say this is my last gen of gaming, not yet anyway. There are a few things that will keep me from jumping on board next gen, though, at least at the beginning.

I wouldn't be surprised of GOW 3 comes out by March of 09, since the first two came out in the month of March.

I resolve to play more older games, and to buy fewer. Last year it was the same resolution.

Yet within the next few weeks I've got Smash Bros, No More Heros, and Burnout Paradise. . . as well as Patapon for PsP in early february. Don't know how succesful I'll really be at the buying less.

However, I will be trying renting again for the first time in years due to receiving a Gamefly gift certificate. Anyone used this service, have any opinions?

"You can't expect people on the internet to listen to balanced or rational argument, and you can't expect trolls not to troll. "--I still like arguing games, and I disagree with this statement from the original post. In general its true, but I don't feel its really the case here at VGR. I've seen people's opinions and ideas be influenced, grow and change here. VGR despite being so small, is a really diverse and informed group. I really like this message board, and won't be reducing my posting. I already reduced it last year, and have got my gaming vs. posting/reading in a good balance.

Perhaps it's time to, I dunno, stop arguing with strangers on the internet about games you haven't played yet.

I love it! But it would be nice if strangers would shut up about them in the first place.

8. I will walk away when a game gets difficult.

Instead of contributing to the videogame violence debate by smashing up my controllers whenever things get a little tough, I will take a deep breath and walk away. I'm going to beat it, by putting it back in its box and playing the next one. Because, really, seriously, there isn't any shame in that.

This is a good one. But I don't know if it's one I need to personally resolve for myself, or if it's one I already have. I think it's a mixture of both: It's one I do, but one I also need to get better at; I'd like to save myself even more grief by quitting sooner.

You guys have no idea how close I came to smashing the #@$% out of my DS last week. #@$%ing Operation Vietnam. My fist was reared back several times... ready to do a Capitan Vidal from Pans Labyrinth on it. I don't know how I did it, but I instead managed to shut the game off before I went off. And the only violence I performed was to yank it out of the system, shove it in it's case, swear that it was going to get traded in tomorrow, and huck it across the room. Still... not cool.

I did try it again the next day however, because as Tashi said, I know that sometimes the hang up can just be a moon/stars/freak/biorhythm thing... but in this case it wasn't.

Developers: I hate to love them. Sometimes I swear, they are idiot know-nothings.

Really? There were a boatload of AAA games in 2007. If you were to believe the "pros". And/or your fellow gamer. 2007 was supposed to be awesome.

This is a subject that I wanted to make a thread about for weeks now. Maybe I still will.

My resolution this year is the same as it's been for the past couple: To cut back on everything video games. Everything. From buying, to playing time, to VGR posting/reading. Even more than last year.

Clarifying my resolution to buy fewer games. . . I also resolve to increase my console gaming time a little more. I actually increased it this year, and would like to find more time to game. I love the hobby, and I'd like to get a couple more hours a week in. I want to play fewer games though, but play the ones I do more deeply.
