Street Fighter IV Unveiled
Exclusive first ever screenshot and details for Capcom's franchise revival.
By Matt Leone, 12/06/2007
Numbers are supposed to be impressive, right? Well, it's been 10 years, two hardware generations, and about 17,000 rumors since the last pure number Street Fighter came around. And today we have the first ever official details on Street Fighter IV.

We don't blame you if your eyes have already skipped down to the screenshot lower on the page (yes, that's from the game engine). Take your time. But we've got some information as well, so the rest of this is probably worth reading when you get a chance.

Though the screenshot doesn't answer this question outright, we can confirm that the game's graphics are polygonal but the gameplay is strictly 2D. There will be new moves, locations, and gameplay features, while the standard six button control scheme remains. Ryu and Ken return along with Chun-Li and Dhalsim, but beyond that the character roster is a mystery. And then there's the issue of what platform(s) the game will end up on, which at this point Capcom is keeping close to its chest (if you search 1UP's database, you'll find listings for arcade, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions, but those are just guesses based on the graphical quality).

For the full reveal of the game -- including hands-on impressions, a rundown of the new gameplay system, and loads of details on new features -- look for the January 2008 issue of EGM in stores soon and hitting subscribers any day now. And then after you check the issue out, keep your eye on 1UP's Street Fighter IV hub page for ongoing coverage continuing into January.

Anyway, are you still reading this? Didn't you see the screenshot above? Click it and look at the larger version! All your friends are doing it...

Ok, so....I am pretty sure that some of you guys don't have the latest issue of EGM yet. Neither do I. But because I am very excited for Street Fighter 4, I will get an issue, scan the article and images in high resolution, and then upload the goodness for all to see...

Stay tuned....and don't say I never did anything for you guys.

I'm kidding. I'll do it because I'm a fan! :D

Oh, by the way....I was listening to the music in the Assassins Creed commercial, and I realized that, the music is from the TV show "House" intro song. You know, the stubborn doctor who is a prodigy in medicine...

Anyway, I found out the song is by Massive Attack. named: Teardrop. AND FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO WANT TO PLAY WORLD OF WARCRAFT WITH ME ON THE HORDE SIDE, HERE'S THE INFO!

Server: Earthen Ring.
Character: Jemi.
Faction: Horde.
Female Blood Elf Paladin.

I JUST made her recently, level 6 currently. So now would be a good time to make your characters so that we can play together...now...

Love it...

I don't see how you went from Street Fighter 4 to Massive Attack to World of Warcraft. The logic...it's just too much for me.

As far as the news, I'm not a big Street Fighter fan, but the game does look cool. Hopefully it turns out good, although I was hoping for a 3D game and not a 2D game. In this day and age, 2D seems to be a step back.

I've been waiting for you to show up as Phryea all this time. But hey, I like the Horde better, so I guess I'm game.

I'll try to be on tomorrow night. No promises, though. I've been busy as of late.

Not a Streetfighter fan sadly, playing Tekken DR makes me fart on this thread.

As much as I want to be excited about this game, all signs are indicating that this game is going to suck.

No fighting game, as far as I can remember, has successfully mixed 2d and 3d together. SF EX series was pretty crappy. Rumble Fish was mediocre. The original Capcom Fighting All stars was cancelled before the game even went into beta. I can't believe Capcom is trying this AGAIN. Let's not forget SF4 is to be directed by the guy who led the canned Capcom Fighting All Stars project. The revisioned of Capcom Fighting All Stars (Capcom Fighting Jam) still turned out to be sh1t. I mean, this game has bad news written all over it. I wish Capcom would do what Sammy has done. Instead of whoring out the graphics, they should concentrate on make unique fighting engine and characters. Seeing it how SF4 takes place between SF2 and SF3, I'd expect lots of returning characters.

P.S I was surprised to hear Teardrop in that commercial. It just didn't seem to fit. What an odd choice.

BWABWA! Excuse me for being drunk, but I have to butt in here to say that the best fighting series by far is Soul Calibur. I played Street Fighter 2 back in the day, but the only fighting games to actually hold my attention are Super Smash Bros. Melee, DOA2 Hardcore, and Soul Calibur 2 (never played 3). I'm waiting on the next Soul Calibur, but as far as Street Fighter 4, I don't really care much. It'll probably be really cool, but I won't play it either way. It does bring back a lot of memories though (Guile was always my favorite...him and Blanca).

Folk, I think the game uses 3-D graphics, with a 2-D fighting engine. Examples of this style(not fighting games though) would be Ikaruga, Gradius V, New Super Mario Bros.

With the action games that have been coming out these past years(NG, DMC, VJ, Shenmue2, GoW), I have been drifting further away from pure fighting games. Myabe it's because I've been drifting away from multi-player gameplay. Sure, there's almost nothing better than fighting an equal opponent, where your battles look almost choreographed, but the single-player adventure is becoming my choice.

I'd rather have SF4, than a new version out of twenty of one of the older games.

I cannot believe the disrespect you all are giving the granddaddy of fighters...if not for SF2 there would be no SC or Tekken.

Give it a chance. It was Capcom's fault for the series to slide though...they took too long to release SF3.

I'm with Folken on this one. Capcom's track record with 2.5d isn't perfect. And I liked EX too but they haven't yet made a fighter like this that didn't feel stiff.

Brazilian gaming blog Blogeek has apparently gotten big news on the upcoming Street Fighter IV game and they are more than happy to share it with the Internets. Check out the translated info below:

The graphics aren't the way they are in the teaser that everyone watched. The game's still pretty, but it has nothing of that ink-splashing or anything. Art direction is interesting. Unlike all the other 3D fighters, SFIV is not meant to be photo realistic.

Street Fighter IV runs at 60 frames per second.

Street Fighter IV will have online play.

The game takes place after Super Street Fighter II Turbo and before SFIII. The good news is that the character roster will be made of many old-school brawlers and some entirely new ones. There are two new girls on the list. We will probably not see any SFIII characters.

The stage you saw at 1Up, if you didn't figure out, is Chun-Li's Stage from SF2.

The excellent Parry system form SFIII is gone. The new system seems to be called Saving or Revenge (we're not sure about the name). We don't know exactly how it works, but it's built around cancels. And we do know we'll have another gauge to activate the Saving/Revenge stuff, besides the usual Super Gauge.

Supers are there (although they didn't decide yet if it will be like in SSF2T or SFIII), and now they've put another moves called Ultras. These makes your character throws a auto combo with tons of moves. It's like a custom combo ... except by the custom part.

Shen Long may appear in the game. We are NOT kidding.

The consoles are not decided yet, really. But, assuming that SFIV will have online play, we can obviously think of Xbox 360 and PS3 (duh). It's very likely that we'll see an arcade version without online mode too, and our sources told us that Capcom could put some test machines in Japan arcades in Q2 next year.

Of course, until we hear something from Capcom or pick up the next issue of EGM, we can't be too sure about this info. So why run with this then? Because Blogeek also provided us with two new screenshots from the game. Looks like a little old blog site got the exclusive before a major publication ... ouch. Of course, there's always that one percent chance that Blogeek has the worlds best Photoshop artist on their team ...

Yeah, but Tekken owes mroe to Virtua Fighter than Street Fighter, even if Virtua Fighter would not have come into existence without Street Fighter, I think Tekken and Soul Caliber are far enough removed that I don't need to pay any obeisance to Street Fighter. I've never been a fan of 2D fighers and I'm not about to start now.

The only "2D" fighter I really liked was Rival Schools/Shiritsu Justice Gakuen (and that had a 3D engine, too) other than that I'm all for Tekken and Soul Caliber myself.

Speaking of WoW, I just found this, which made me laugh:

Linky (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/downloads/ssotd/#1179)

Also, since my exams are over and I've got absolutely nothing going on during the day, I figured I might fire up WoW again. How often do you guys play, and is it usually during the day or during the night? I'm still unsure about getting a month of WoW since I know I'll get bored of the game pretty damn quick, but I'm just wondering what you guys' playing habits are like.

LOL let's hope it's not that bad.

I'm going to make a trial account and play on Earthen Ring for a few days. I decided not to renew my account, but this way I can play with you guys whenever you're online.
